Thoughts on Ping Alta CB Driver shaft

Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on the stock Ping Alta Shaft that comes in Ping G400 Max drivers. Also since I usually play my driver at 45”, do you think if I go get it tipped .75” it will affect anything?

I have had my G400 Max with Alta CB shaft for a month now and find it to be a good performing shaft for my swing. I would think tipping it that much would certainly change the stiffness on the shaft.

 

I have always swapped out stock shafts in my drivers but I think I will keep the Alta shaft as it seems to work well in the G400 Max.

 

Prior to the G400 Max I had an Epic and a Callaway Rogue and both were longer than the G400 but nothing is as forgiving as the G400 Max as it is a fairway finder for sure, and this time of year in South Texas the rough is so thick you have to stay in the fairway. Saving me a couple of strokes per round staying in the short grass.

I have the Alta shaft in my G400 Max and it seems fine to me. Although I do prefer a lighter shaft like I had in my Epic Star driver which I am kicking myself in the azz for getting rid of it.

But yes the Alta shaft is all good.

Alta is a great shaft. I wouldn't tip it. If you want a shorter shaft, cut it at the butt end(request from Ping). If your spin numbers are too high, go with the stock Tour shaft, which is 1/2'' shorter vs. Alta. Comes down to how the shaft/head combo works for your swing. Lots of shafts/heads in the fit cart, just need to get fit for the right combo. Then order any length you want from Ping. Just watch swing weight when changing length. ;)

Yes I swing around 105 on track man so my thoughts were that tipping the shaft wouldn’t hurt me to much. Great news about the shaft though, this correlates to what I’ve been hearing from others.

Do not tip trim it... As others said Butt trim if you must but it will change the swing weight slightly. The Alta CB didn't work in my G ( Too much spin ) so I found a shaft that works for me.

I now play a G400 Max with that same shaft. I have a Kuro Kage that came with my G400 Max so if you find the Alta CB doesn't work message me for a deal

I gamed a Tour AD BB in my TM drivers for the past few years and I was very surprised how good the stock Alta CB shaft was considering it is nothing like the BB. It felt good and control was nice, easy and straight. Obviously hitting it much highr but numbers are better for me now in my older age.

 

I currently have the XTorsion copper playing at 45" in the driver and it is like a more premium version of the Alta CB. I prefer my drivers at 45", any longer and I tend to lose control and/or balance sometimes.

I cut my Alta shaft to 45 and got a heavier weight to keep my swing weight at D3. You can get one from Maltby. Takes about 1 minute to change out.

I think it is a great stock shaft. I went to be fit by Ping at their fitting facility at Kierland in Scottsdale. I expected to go with an upgraded shaft but liked the stock Alta in X stiff the best.

Why not tip it?

 

In all honesty the Alta shafts are worth maybe $50 used. If you don't like it after tipped, you can replace it quite easily. .75 is nothing outrageous.

I tipped mine a .50", added weight to get it back to D3. It plays just over 45". Lowered my spin, added distance and control. I hit the center of the club face much more often.

What flex did you get in the XTorsion shaft? The weight from regular to stiff is large compared to the difference in the Alta r and s. Also was the Xt tipped or just butt cut for the 45 inch length? thx

+1 on this suggestion, but it depends on the results of your fitting. This is what I'd go with if you are 105 mph and cutting the shaft 1/2-3/4" and keeping swingweight in the D3 range. You'll have to add 6g back to the head to get the swingweight back and that could add some spin and launch (if you didn't tip); albeit very little. So sure, in this case trim the tip 1/2".

 

If after your fitting you could have used a little more spin and launch, don't tip, just cut it to length BUT do add the weight back to the head to keep the swingweight normal.

 

In the end the difference either way will be small so go with what makes you more comfortable.
