Club distance assessment... WTF?

So i went out to the range this weekend and hit a bunch of balls with the tracer on various clubs.

I know my distance has been wacky with some clubs all season, hence why they stay in my bag.

But i was surprised to see this. I thought i was crazy.

 

All of these numbers were based on 20 balls per club average. Some are fine, some are surprising, just curious why? Im sure there is no easy answer and many factors like club weight, length, swing speed, etc.

 

in theory a couple of those clubs would be flip flopped distance wise, but proof is in the pudding it seems. I have no idea how i hit my 9 as far as my 6 or my 7 as far as my 5

Maybe i just hit my 9 and 7 the cleanest and am sloppy with the others?

 

Would love some thoughts. Either way i will have these numbers in by back pocket at the course moving forward for reference so im not over or under shooting greens by 15-20 yds, especially with the 9

 

72deg - 55yds while taking the moon out

60deg - 100-110

52deg - 110-120

P - 120-130

9 - 150-160

8 - 140-150

7 - 175

6- 150-160

5 - 170-185

3/4 hyb - 190-225

I would say your lofts are all over the place. I'd take them to get checked and bent back to standard.

I think you really need to look at the entire data set and throw out any outliers. Or did you already do that?

Let's say you hit a solid shot 17/20 times with the 9 iron but only 14/20 times with the 8 iron.

That will throw the averages off.

I would also be interested to see the median vs the mean.

There were some crappy shots i threw out, so its not a clean 20 pcs of data per club. It is based on the "good" data i noted. I grouped all the similar shots together within reason.

 

I hear what you are saying though.

I never thought to get the lies tested, These clubs were brand new in February/March.

 

Im going to go back one night this week, maybe tonight and run them again. I have a tourney on Sat and need to dial this in or at least know where i stand.

I agree with Brian. Lofts have to be way off to be getting these kinds of numbers.And, yes, new

sets can be off. Shouldn't be but it happens.

Well when you hit your 60* 110.....

 

As for the 60 and 72, full swings just to be consistent in testing, they were in the bag, and fun pretty much.

In my set I have one that looks like this - 9 -and one that looks like this -6. The one that looks like this - 6 - goes about 150-160yds. The other one doesn't. Might just be worth double checking that.

I am going to guess that you have a very strong grip and an over the top move.

 

You are confident with your 9-iron and 7-iron, and go all out with them. Not so much with the 8-iron and 6-iron.

 

Not only do you need to get your lofts checked, but you should also get the frequency of your irons checked as well. You might find that your 8-iron and 6-iron do not fall in line with your 9 and 7.
