Looking for a 36 holes in one day near Tempe mid January

Hey all, I'm visiting a buddy who recently moved to Tempe (near campus I believe). We're looking to play 36 on a Saturday and I'm wondering what our options are. A 36 hole facility would make life easy, but two good 18 hole tracks near each other is a decent backup option. Keeping the driving to a minimum to get all 36 in as well as being able to have a few beers with an easy drive home is the goal.

FTR, we are playing Southern Dunes the following day.

Talking stick isnt the best of values for $100. Your assesment of OK is pretty accurate, but there are many worse courses in the world at that price point. 36 can be tricky in the winter if you have a slow first round. Talking stick has the proximity value and if you can get one of the first tee times it wont be a problem. If first tee time is 8 am or so you have about 9 total hours of playing time, probably not enough time to consider anything but 36 on the same property.

I would simplify things and just do Papago twice.

Raven followed by Legacy. Right across the street from each other, both good not great tracks, enough differences in the layouts to not feel like your playing the same track twice. Should be a reasonable uber from campus if dont have a car.

My buddy actually suggested that, so it's a good possibility.

How's the foot doing? Got any beer requests?

Thanks, that helps alot. So say we do Raven and Legacy on the 36 hole day and Southern Dunes on the last day, what would be a good course for the first day, staying in that same area for $150-200?

The Camelback courses (Ambiente/Padre) would also be a good choice, and aren't too far from campus.

True. Ambiente is one of my favorite courses in the Valley, and Padre isn't too shabby. Problem is that Camelback's winter rack rates are nuts, 36 holes there on a Saturday is going to be a $300+ day per man for the OP unless he scores some kind of TeeOff/GolfNow deal on one or more of the rounds, or they have some kind of replay deal I've not heard of (doubtful).

They have a significant private membership, and also use the courses for hotel amenities, it's a Marriott property. That's to say that they seem to price things high enough to keep the tee sheet relatively open, as opposed to wanting to absolutely maximize golf revenue. Just one of many places in the area that balance that private/public zone.

They must not be that busy. Membership is $20k + intiation + public + hotel guests. In the uk public play reduces the membership cost & they also have a lot more members than in the us. I was listening to a podcast today, Cruden Bay has roughly 1000 members paying about £1200/year. The closest thing I’ve seen to this in AZ is tonto verde. Closest thing in the us to the uk model is Pasatiempo

I haven’t played Papago in years but is it realistic to play 36 there? My experience there is a quick round is 4:15 and anything after mid morning is 5 hours at least. That makes 36 mathematically impossible this time of year - has that changed recently, is play quicker there now?

I'm going to call Whirwind today and see if they have a 36 hole special. If that looks good we will probably do Raven Friday, Whirlwind 36 on Saturday and Southern Dunes on Sunday.

Otherwise we'll consider traveling a little further Friday for a splurge course, do Raven/Legacy on Saturday and SD Sunday.

  • 2 weeks later...

Some good suggestions in here from a logistics standpoint, but the course only that’s feasible for $100 per round is Papago. Raven, Legacy (maybe the afternoon round), Whirlwind, Talking Stick, no way you’re playing those for less than a $100 in January.

In the Hoofer

We ended up with this itinerary:

friday- 18 @ McDowell Mt

Saturday- 36 @ Whirlwind

sunday- 18 @ Southern Dunes

I'll update afterward for reviews and course conditions

On a side note, I get to come back out two weeks later for work and should be able to sneak in a round or two ?
