Florida Wildlife

So I will be in Orlando from January 14th- May 16th. I will be working but will spend my time off playing as much golf as possible. Living in KY my entire life, I have little to no experience with any wildlife on the golf course. I’ve seen a grand total of 2 snakes ever on the golf courses at home. You see deer all the time of course but that’s not the type of wildlife I’m talking about. Does anyone have tips on what to expect as far as gators and snakes go? Im not really worried about it, but I’m use to being pretty adventurous on the course as far as walking through weeds etc. and just would like to know what to expect. Are snakes and gators really everywhere like you hear about or do you not even notice them if you aren’t looking for them? I know this is far from the normal posts on here, but it just popped in my head today. Haha

For my money, the snakes are a bigger issue than the gators. That's why when I'm playing in Florida or the Carolinas I don't go traipsing around in the brush looking for a lost ball. I also keep a sharp eye out anywhere near the water. It's the gators you don't see that you need to be concerned with.

Just don't go looking for your ball in really suspect areas. Gators shouldn't be a problem, it's the snakes and water moccasins that don't make it worth it.

 

I've only met one golfer that has ever been bitten (by a snake) in Florida and it wasn't worth him looking for his ball.

In Florida for 14 years. Seen one snake of any size (Live). Many gators, but mostly small, medium, minding their own business. Never any issues. The thorns and sawgrasses keep us from digging too deep for balls more than a fear of snakes!

In Orlando, the summer heat will kill you long before a gator does. You're going to be done just before it gets really hot.

Just pay attention when you go look around a palmetto or something for your ball, and always use a club to do so. And if it's long gone, don't even think about it. I think the copperheads are the only you have to worry about sticking around though. Most snakes will skedaddle if they hear you coming.

 

Not sure what to tell you about gators. After seeing a guy play his shot out of the water behind the green at PGA National in his skivvies, I have no idea what is right or wrong anymore.
