Iron head covers! Yay or Nay?

Tried -- new Mizuno JPX 919 Forged -- but just couldn't get on with them (the covers, not the irons -- love the irons!).

Solid Nay for me.

It's funny how people here think covers are somehow sacrilegious.

The questions go something like this:

"But you're going to hit the ground anyway":

- The ground is considerably softer than the club heads it bangs into.

- No one objects to hitting the ball; the ball is softer than the club head also.

- The BACK of the iron rarely gets dinged on shots... you know, the badge side?

"Chatter looks good / like you're not a noob"

- Your assumption, your loss.

- Pace of play with iron covers really should not be an issue. If it is, it isn't the covers.

In addition, for those of us who do use covers, some of us walk and it's very simple. But many players don't want to hear tons of noise. Maybe if you like the metronomic clattering when you're walking, that's cool. That's your thing. However those of us with a push cart, iron covers quiet the bag 95%. I'm sure those that drive buggies also don't want to hear the random banging of their forged irons. Not that this thread hasn't been done, overdone, overcooked and dead-horse-beaten.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

But what if your ball ends up next to rock? Or on a path of some sort and hitting off the path is your best option?

My irons have hundreds of dings and scratches and they were all made during play. The bag chatter is invisible in comparison.

Only time I ever use iron covers is right before my bag goes in the travel case on the way to the airport. Can never be too careful when dealing with airlines. It’s embarrassing to even have them at all and I am damn sure that none of my buddies see them hiding in my bag at all. No way I could handle all the chirping that would come my way if I used them for regular play.

Either you played these for years, play dog tracks, or need to keep it in the fairway more often

My feeling is this...if a guy is worried that his iron covers will mean he's not cool, guess what...he's already not cool. Rock that **** like a boss if you want to, and don't worry about what people think. Cuz that's cool, lol :)

If the OP wants iron covers, fine. Irons are tools designed to dig in the turf, like all my tools in the garage are used to fix this or that. My driver, 3wd and putter have covers because they are not used in the same manner as irons. All tools should be cared for but covers are a bit much.

That said, what I have noticed are those people that use iron covers tend to lose them and spend course time hunting for them, what that happens it annoys me.

I have had many covers and never lost a single one. No time lost removing or replacing either. But yeah, tools should just be used as tools. Who care how neat, organized and nice looking they stay........

It's always amazing and a little troublesome how much hate the iron cover threads expose among our community! Why the hate and vitriol?

1. What people want to do is their business. Disagree if you want, but don't be an assh*le about it.

2. I disagree that pace of play is an issue. Rangefinders take more time, and looking at a gps watch is about the same as removing an Iron cover--or wood, hybrid, or putter cover for that matter.

3. if someone buys irons they're not sure about--and that seems to happen to folks in this community-- using iron covers will get them more money on resale if the irons don't work out.

4. if irons are bought and covered by a playability guarantee (tgw, budget, worldwide), it may be a good idea to keep bag chatter to a minimum. I don't know the rules of these guarantees, but being careful seems prudent.

5. Bag chatter may be undesirable to a golfer, and iron covers protect very effectively. It's an aesthetic thing, but so what if someone wants their irons to look pristine?? Also the resale value issue again--many folks here don't keep their irons longer than the cycle of their favorite brand and getting more money can be important when it's time for resale .

6. For those folks who use iron covers, don't let the "no iron cover bullies" get to you with their personal attacks. I

Just my 2 cents on this very controversial issue.

All my tools are kept in draws of a large Red Craftsman tool cabinet and carry toolbag in the garage, cooking utensils, pots and pans, and very expensive and razor-sharp kitchen knives are properly cared for and stored after use, as well. I trained my son and "wife" to do the same, however, the latter person hasn't really taken to training as well as hoped, so I gave up on that....lol

I applaud you if you haven't lost or misplaced a headcover. A few friends more than once have headed back a hole or more to retrieve a forgotten headcover on the ground, affecting our tee group's pace of play.

It’s a little bit of everything. Frequent play, lots if practice, a rock here and there under the turf. I drive it pretty well but even the best players need to gouge it of a ditch sometimes.

Point is, had I used iron covers this whole time they would have looked 99% the same. They are pieces of steel designed to violently strike a muddy ball and cut a hole in the ground. The only way to protect them is to clean the ball between shots and hit from a piece of astro turf that you carry with you att all times. That’s not golf.

Club soles and faces will get 'seasoned' or 'war wounds', that's expected and covers aren't used to prevent that type of wear. What covers do prevent is bag chatter (I only play forged irons, always have, save a week long experiment with Pings back in the 80s) and the clank, clank, clank noise of clubs bashing into each other.

Hey, they're your 'tools' treat them as you like, but for those of use who choose to do differently than you, accept that those are our 'tools' and we can do what we like with them as well.

I don't do anything particular to them, ecxept violently strike a muddy ball and cut a hole in the ground a couple times a week. If I instead took them for a nice walk in the park I think I could carry them around for years and they would still look brand new.

A morbid analogy to iron head covers would be the psychological treatment offered to prisoners condemned to solitary confinement.
