Luke Donald, ..Hanging it up?

I could see it happening sooner rather than later.

He has done a few stints with Sky Sports covering golf and he seemed to enjoy it. The Sky team is becoming quite a dynamic younger team with the likes of Dougherty now fronting the coverage. Donald was a good fit with that at the events he was involved in.

Contrast that with his game being nowhere near the level that it used to be. He was never been long nor straight but it seems like he is shorter and more crooked than ever and whilst his putting stills seems to be above average, it is not at the unfathomably good level it was back at the beginning of the decade.

Adding all of that up to the fact that he has millions in the bank, a wife, three young daughters and he himself is 41, is he really going to be grinding like he did when he was 30 to get to where he did? I can't see it but I can see Sky throwing a good few thousand at him which will give him plenty of spending money with all of his other millions being a great cushion for him.

Luke is highly articulate and intelligent, so no chance of appearing on Sky then!

Ha. To be fair they're pretty good overall on Sky. I'd be happy to see Donald replace Mark Roe though, who is bad.

Do you think so?

Save for Nick Doherty, who is very good in front of the camera, and Tony Johnstone who is quite witty, self effacing and exceptionally knowledgeable about the bushveld, you could ditch the rest for me; Beemer barely seems to know what he's going to say when he starts a sentence. Radar plays the brash Aussie too much. Coltart answers every question with another question. They all treat McGinley like he's some kind of sage just because he won a home Ryder Cup. Butch is past it, so is Euan. And don't get me started on Mark Roe!!

I was happy enough with what you were saying until you said that Butch and Euan are past it. The two of them bounce of each other brilliantly in the commentary booth. I have grown up listening to them on Sky Sports and cannot see past them when it comes to commentary. When you added Livo in the studio, that was the dream team right there.

Euan and Butch were excellent, and it was a real coup when Sky had Tiger's closest confidante in their booth. However, of late Butch has started to show his age - his stints on commentary have got shorter and his analysis has lost some if it's sharpness. Understandable at 75. In Claude Harmon they have the perfect replacement though - inside info on DJ & others, great swing knowledge, brilliant in The Open Zone.

This rise and fall of Luke Donald. If you're short-ish off the tee, you better be accurate. SG Tee plummets.

He's just kinda slowly fizzled out. It's hard to be 2.2 shots better than the field for an extended period of time!

Hard to comprehend Donald averaging 2781.1 yards in 2014 and still fell down the rankings.

Lost .3 off the tee and .3 with the putter. FIR% was down, I'm guessing accuracy issues.

Luke just couldn't take the pressure. There's a lot to being number 1 that people just don't know.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

I've been a big fan of Luke for a while, and was surprised he's not playing the Honda..

I know he was out with a bad back last year...do you think this will be his last season?

I hope not i really love to watch him play I once watched him hit bunker shots for about an hour here in Illinois he is so good in the sand I just couldn’t stop watching the mastery. I do feel that his driving of the golf ball has been an issue and maybe part of his back issue

Great to see him up there in the lead. It was like jumping in a time machine a little seeing Casey and Donald up there both on the leaderboard. How can it possibly be 20 years since the two of them dominated in Nairn at the Walker Cup?!

Watching him over the first two days has been revealing though, still drives it terrible and the putting isn't anywhere near as good as it once was. I'll be surprised if he maintains his position on the leaderboard.

Thread wasnt about winning or being elite again. Hes far from hanging it up if youre in the lead.

I made no comment about winning or being elite. I merely made an observation on his game based on just 2 rounds at Valspar and according to Luke himself its about playing pain free so it's not possible that you or anybody else for that matter could know he'd be fine both with regards to his physical condition and his game. The original statement is pure speculation and the attempt to claim vindication is misplaced.
