Have you ever experienced overtraining from golf?

So on the plus side, my swing is in a really good place right now. In my last lesson with Monte, he said that if I could fix one issue in my transition, there's nothing about my swing that would prevent me from shooting 65. I was making a lot of progress on that issue until yesterday. That being the case, my plan is to take a week off of everything except putting (as long as my lower back is feeling good). Once I get back into it, I'm going to try and stay under 100 full swings per day to go along with about 50 left arm parallel. When I'm at the outdoor range, I'm going to do zero block practice. I'm going to limit my superspeed golf training to the 3 days per week they recommend, and I'm going to limit any weightlifting to those 3 days as well. I'm probably going to stop playing basketball for a while. Basketball plus golf just isnt a great combination for my lower back feeling fresh.

> Finally hit a wall today. I've been hitting 400+ balls per day for a few months now, and this last week I was probably at around 700 per day trying to groove a swing change. Played a round today and the club felt like it was dragging behind me all day. My driver was more than 12mph lower than normal on SSR. Just checked my resting heartrate and it was 112, my normal is mid 60s.

Count your lucky star if you have not incurred injury.

In the old days, professionals do practice a lot but they would spread the practice out for the day.

Since golf is their business and line of work, this is no problem to hot a couple hundred of golf balls in the morning , have lunch and practice putting and chipping befor going back to hit another couple of hundred of range balls in the afternoon.

Even taking all the time they want, they still have blisters on their hands and injury later on in life.

Us ? When we only have a couple of hours to spare to jam in a few hundred range balls will do bad things to your body.

I have friends whom will stop practicing when they had found the key of the day at the driving range, even with half the range balls still not hit away.

Muscle and mind fatique will not improve your golf game, if any, will groove you into bad habits since your tired body will try to compensate to avoid injury.

And you can take lesson after lesson, it does not guarantee anything. To a large extent, it is about talent and hand to eye coordination. I am an 80s-90s shooter, occasionally have moments of brilliance in the high 70s, but that is it. I don't believe i have the talent to go any further. And I give no credibility to these gurus who infest these forums and say otherwise, and I give no credibility to the latest claims by the manufacturers of equipment and balls. None of us are entitled to a game at a high level, and hard work does not guarantee much. You get to the point where you just get out and enjoy the company, and the scenery, and the 19th hole that follows. Just like work, there are people that get ahead because of their skills and talents and it seems effortless, there are some that try and try, they go no where. No guarantees with anything in this life, golf is but one example of that.

> I honestly couldn't disagree more. The genetic lottery does play a role in your ability to get better but there is so much more to golf than physical attributes. Countless players fail to get to their full potential due to their head getting in the way. Call me old school but I still believe hard work pays off.

Proper hard work

Honestly working from home makes all the difference. I've been lucky enough to WFH this year and I can get to the course at 6-6:30 practice and be home by 8. Then go back at lunch for 45 min. Then go back around 4:30. It's all the time spent getting dressed, traveling to work, etc. that you are saving and thus spending it practicing.

And having a mat and net in my garage makes it super easy. I can still answer calls and get to a computer in seconds if I need to.

It doesnt matter how good your swing is it will catch up to your lower back and it sounds like it has. I was into 250 balls a day for 3 months and finally back went. Luckily I'm pain free after working out every day for a month strengthening core, glutes, hip flexors, quads and hamstrings. All of which were very week.

My two best rounds this season (low 70's) came from walking on the course with no practice beforehand. Roll a few putts and go to the first tee.

Wouldn't hitting that many balls daily effectively be working out and strengthening those muscles if you are using them that much?

What I was meaning by that is that I'm hopefully not going to have any more swing changes that I obsess over, driving me to pound balls.

There is no such thing as overtraining in any activity that calls for clarity, judgment, accuracy and grooved muscle reactions. It's all about how you configure training sessions and goals. Grooving a swing is more about diversity and focus than just banging balls over and over. During my prime self-learning period, I hit 1100-1500 balls per week or a large 250 ball basket a day. To not get bored I set up day sessions that targeted specific types of shots, so it wasn't mundane ball banging, and they worked around the gym and my business.

I would pick a day and only hit a basket of balls using long irons, other days mid & short irons, and other days only SW & LW. Some days bunker and chip shots, other days I would pick a target and hit 250 balls at it. Other days I'd get to the range early and work a $deal for an end stall and allow me to put 8-10 hula-hoops on the ground straight out to 120yards and target each. Also included one-two days per week playing eighteen holes executive courses using only irons. Don't recall exactly but didn't play a regulation course for nearly a year after taking up the game. This above regime lasted for nearly two years and reached a single digit inside of five years.

Over training, overreaching, etc, whatever you wanna call it is real. When this happens, just take a couple of days off and rest. Then get back at it when you’re physically and mentally fresh. Sometimes, I think being mentally fresh is more important than being physically fresh. It’s OK to take a day off now and then.
