Yeah short irons are absolutely no issue in blades if you have decent speed and strike. Unlike many on here you’re actually realistic about the fact that there are drop offs. You aren’t getting what you need out of the long irons. Tour players mostly don’t touch 3 an 4 iron blades anymore. That is telling. If you’re a very solid amateur - low singles or better I think 5-P in blades is fine as well. It also has to do with the design. I had no issue playing the 4 iron in MP5 due to very low VCOG. I could stop it dead on a green. Others I’ve had not so much. Blades are great if you’ve got the game.

I tried a self propelled gas mower and I just couldn't concentrate so I got lazy and my path was all over the place. The fatter air filled tires just don't get thru the grass like the thin, hard tires on my push blade mower. My neighbor is a first time home owner and I convinced him that his mowing will improve with a good used blade push mower that is harder to use.

Just picked up a set of the new Wilson Staff Blades. It’s been a while since I’ve gamed a pure blade I’m looking forward to goofing around with these. Once GHIN closes down in Ohio all the party kids find there way into my bag to have some fun!

MP-5 CG isn't really low. It's listed at .789" in MPF details.

I wouldn't think Tour usage as a guide is particularly helpful, the conditions in which they're existing are many magnitudes tougher than what we see.

That said, there's some use at that end of the bag for a bit of CB. All depends on the individual, and even each individual's confidence level. There was a time a club such as a Golden Ram TW282 1 iron wouldn't have made me blink, but sadly I'm not 45 anymore; I get a little twitchy with sticks of that nature these days, and now use a hybrid or maybe a Revolution 1 iron in that loft slot. I've picked up a Mizuno Pro 2i to possibly use with my MP37s. Stands to reason a time will come that the 3i gets replaced, then the 4i....

> My lad, aged 18, has just decided that he wants to get back into golf after a brief flirtation 10 years ago. We’ve just got back from our second range session where he’s just been hitting shots with every club in my back up bag (MacGregor MT Pro-Cs). I took my Mac VIP Limited 2-iron butter knife with rebar stiff shaft from the early 1970s to have a bit of a tune with my swing. Obviously he wanted to have a go and, I am not joking, he was striping it. He hit a couple of bad ones, but the look on his face when he nailed one was something else. It became addictive for him.

>

> My logic is that if he can hit 1970s blades, he can hit anything. Going forward, we’re thinking about getting a couple of lessons to get the basics right and then letting him loose with the 1970s blades to hone the swing.

That is exactly right--- If one can hit 1970s style blades they can hit anything--- One of the reasons WHEN I go to the range in the range bag I have a mix of old blades and persimmon woods. I also play quite a bit of what we call strictly vintage golf with blades and persimmons. If I can hit those small faced Macgregor butter knives in the face I can hit my more modern KZGs there too. But then again in some eyes the KZGs are small faced they are a one piece forged cavity backs or what some call players CBs. They are a little larger than a Mac VIP but smaller than most CBs made today I have caught flack on here before but I recommend practice as a whole with a couple of blade irons.

I just went the opposite route. Played a blade type club for decades, played well into a plus handicap. Now I’m older, more injured, more arthritic.

Got a very unique set of i210’s on the way. Modus 105 in X (been playing 130 grams shafts since I was a teenager) with D4 swingweight. Looking forward to hitting mid and long irons with some height without having to swing particularly hard.

Modus 105X are a really nice shaft. I have them in some old Yamaha blades (that look exactly like Hogan Redlines looking down on them). They are very stable and they have a nice mid flight to them, for me.

  • 5 months later...

Longtime Mizuno fan, have been playing forged clubs for years but only recently got into blades.

Had JPX 825 Pros in the bag for a while. Saw the MP-54 in GG, picked up a used 9i in great condition off the 'bay and in the bag it went.

Next thing I know I swapped out the JPX for the 54s, one club at a time. The 54 is more of a muscleback, I know. But that feel started me down this path.

Then I found a barely-used MP4 9i. Ohhhhh that's what you folk are talking about.

Just picked up a set of MP-32s in good condition, having them regripped but going to retain the weaker lofts and just take more club.

The 825 Pros are going up north to Mom's house, so I don't have to travel with my clubs. The MP54 will sit in the garage, and I'm going to game these old-school blades for a while. :)
