They are. We sold a crap ton of them over the last three years. I liked hitting 160 yard pitching wedges, but with 3 years to improve them, I hate when people miss out of updated technology and gear because they chose the wrong time to get irons that are shiny and new.

For Ping (or any other brand) my observation is that it's usually about a 50/50 percentage whether the new version is an improvement over the previous model , and sometimes the new version is worse.

But our owner hit these. In this case, we believe they're going to be better than the previous. They had 3 years to get them right. We'll know soon.

As much as the golf brands like to promote their new model introductions, make claims that "we won't introduce a new model unless we've improved on the previous one", talk about technology and improved numbers etc.... I question whether a lot of it is nonsense.

For example Ping had a ten year period of moving from S59 to S58, 57, 56, and 55. I played shots with all those models and don't believe there was a significant difference. I guess because of the current golf industry standards, Asian country production of heads, demands of retailers etc... all brands feel compelled to often introduce new products/ replace models.

When the late, great Karsten Solheim ran Ping he kept the Eye 2/ Eye 2+ model in the line for a decade, and it sold consistently great for most all those years. Once his heirs took over they started introducing new model every 2 years so none of Ping's subsequent models ever matched the sale revenues of the Eye 2/Eye 2+. And I think most players agree that the the , Zing, Zing 2,sis, i3, i3 O size etc... were never as all around good as the Eye 2.

I know it's a different era now and keeping one model in the line for 10 years (or even 2.5 years) is just not done any longer, but that doesn't make it right or sensible. Whether the new G710 is the same, better, or worse than the G700 remains to be seen.

Personally, I think Ping uses that as a way of marketing their products, they want to make you believe they won’t release something until it shows improvement over its predecessor but in all reality, it’s just a marketing technique to maintain the release cycle they want to have. I guarantee they had the G410 LST ready for release for months before even the G410 lineup was released

Agreed, at this point we're looking at incremental changes and tweaks. Every now and then you might have something revolutionary come along but nothing these days is going to produce big time yardage unless you had an extremely bad fit.

I gamed the G700's when they came out for a year and a half. Nice irons but I think they had room to improve on the acoustics. For me I would prefer less offset in the lower loft irons but Ping is known for offset especially in their SGI line of irons so that is not going to change. I could deal with the offset on the G700's up to around the 8i...maybe the 7i too, but for me the 6i offset really messed me up over the ball.

I have since moved back to my Altitude irons which are large but have less offset than most blades. Fit my eye really nice and very easy to line up.

I am also testing the Cobra T-Rail 6i which has more offset than the Altitudes but less than the G700's. The T-rail is a strong contender to make my bag for this season but I have to hit the G710s first as a last ditch effort.

You make a good point regarding the nascent "hollow head" .

I remember that when the G700 was introduced its representative person/engineer was adamant that the company did not want to fill the hollow space with any sort of material because that would negate the "rebound/elasticity dynamic" that the company wanted for this iron.

And I know that Ping's second hollow head design, the i500, suffered faces caving/separating from the body.

So, absolutely hollow head irons are a relatively new frontier and likely more prone to significant evolution than solid head iron designs. That said, I think the G700 has been a sales success , probably exceeding the company's expectations, so I would question the merits of making significant changes to that model.

I asked about changing my order from G700 to G710. Waiting to hear whether the order has been started at Ping or not.
