Is Golf the most hypocritical game?

Agree for the most part.

But, there is such a thing as pure competitiveness. Good competition and wanting to win. Even if there is no money on the line.

Not everyone is like that, but some of us are. Some of my buddies and I really want to beat each other. We aren't mean about it but we all know that we want to win.

If we don't play by the same rules, we can't have a good competition. And competing is fun for us.

Also, as for casual players who cheat (Mulligan's, gimmies, fixing lies etc.) And then post scores or talk about their scores...I personally find it objectively wrong. It's essentially a lie and it's stupid. Just keep your actual score or don't keep a score. They are making themselves look stupid. Can't help but lose a little respect for them.

Hypocrisy abounds, it's a human trait and not the fault of golf.

Yes I have seen that. What is the reason? Are they too lazy to draw lines on the balls before a round? Is the ball for putting softer? Rolls straighter? Clearly breaking the rules but I don't understand why. I only notice this because their caddie swaps the ball out for them. Otherwise I don't think I would notice.

Golf isnt hypocritical but some of the players certainly can be. To be fair though, golf isnt anywhere near as bad as baseball or football can be. Baseball likes to talk about the tradition and integrity of the game but then they will try to defend the PED era by saying that you shouldnt keep people out of the hall of fame because at that time everyone was doing it.

The same with football: they want these guys to act like maniacs on the field and practically kill each other but then they get all worked up when one of them commits a violent crime off the field or acts crazy. They also want to talk about players, "being loyal to the shield" until one of them has to retire due to concussions or other injuries or again, committs a violent crime or God forbid supposedly disrespects the flag in some way and then suddenly they want to get rid of them and have them never be heard from again.

Lots of sports can be hypocritical but we as fans and consumers still choose to support it, so maybe we're all the real hypocrites.

Ok, so why not just say your playing for low score of the day for bragging rights? I dont care if it's for a Coke, .50$, or $5000k. The stakes really don't matter, it's the fact that before striking the first shot you've agreed to compete. Otherwise it's typically ill-defined passive-aggressive nonsense claimed after the fact.

Amen. I'll admit that even I bend the rules a bit at times and probably dont count absolutely every penalty stroke that I could but Im also just a regular duffer playing a casual round. If I were playing to establish a serious handicap or playing a competitive round, you can bet that I would play it by the book and count every little penalty stroke.

Why would anybody not play within the rules of the game every time you play? Taking a mulligan or not counting a penalty shot...you’re just cheating yourself. The only reason to do it is to declare a score lower than you actually shot.

I know of two guys who were caught cheating at my club and they were hounded out...nobody wanted to play with them. Guys who concede themselves shots in a casual round tend to do the same when there’s something on the line and it’s flat out not tolerated...it’s cheating and against the integrity of the game.

Reed was disqualified for cheating at college...
