Thought I'd say hi

Recommended Posts

I took a beginning golf class about 18 months ago and started buying clubs at thrift stores. I had some cheapo Kunnan irons and then found a set of Hogan Edge GCDs. I couldn't believe how much better the Hogans felt. So, I started collecting sets of Ben Hogan irons. Every time I Google info on a new set I end up here, so I finally joined.

My latest set are Hogan Precision irons with the 3-1/2" hosel, 2-9, with the 3-9 having the boxed grooves. These have been restarted with Dynamic stiffs 1/2" longer than modern standard. I had previously found a Explorer with the original TT rocket regular flex and leather grip.

I was wondering about polishing clubs, should I save that for clubs that would be rechromed? Does anyone know of a good resource on refurbishing irons? These are actually pretty nice and I'll probably just redo the paint fill. The Explorer is a bit more rough, but it has the original shaft so I'm reluctant to mess with it. I have restarted a couple of clubs, but not pinned irons.

I've also scored a set of 3-E Apex Pc's (my favorite irons so far), 3-E '74 Directors, 3-E Apex Edge with which I carry an '83 Radial E and S as a gap and sand wedge, a set of PC5's missing the 5, as well as a set of Kenneth Smith's, '81 Titlist Tour models. I go to the thrift store daily lol!

I'll attach a couple of pics of the Precisions.

John

Welcome John. Those Precision’s are a nice find and look to be in good shape. As for cleaning them up I’d use some Bar Keepers Friend and 0000 steel wool to remove any pitting or surface rust though yours don’t look to have much or any. The faces might clean up a bit more for you though. After you could polish them a bit. I like to use 3M Finishing Material compound.

Im with you when it comes to originality. If a club has the original grips I don’t want to mess with them. As a taller guy that can be difficult as clubs were a bit shorter 60-70 years ago so some clubs I own aren’t exactly a good fit, but I still enjoy experiencing them in their original state.

Looks like you have a good start to a Hogan collection. The Precision’s are one of the finest clubs of all time. Enjoy!

John, you are off to a flying start in your classic collecting. Precisions are a great find especially in the condition of yours. It took me years to find my Precision's! Over here they were made by Slazenger for Hogan but are amongst the best irons I have played. I agree with Deejaid's comments on originality and wouldn't do much to a set in the condition of yours other than enjoy them. Like you I also have a set of PC's which I love. My observation on those is they have nitrous button rather than a sweet spot, on the rare occasion I do find the middle of the club they slingshot about 20% further which feels great but can land you in a whole world of trouble! Currently playing Redlines. Whatever you play, enjoy!

Nice set you're sharing with us. Might say they're reasonably attractive.

Welcome to our antique heaven corner of the universe. What amazes me is you found a set of Precisions with the Equalizer. DJ gave you a good suggestion on the cleaning up part. He is pretty good at that. Me I usually play them as I find them. LOL I may clean them some to check groove condition. But then again I play all my stuff and I am not a spit and polish type guy I am more of the rat rod type

JT, those irons look pretty good to me. I'd just clean them up a bit ( not that they need much), maybe redo the paint fill and then just go and play them.

I always admired the progressive nature of the head shape of the precision irons. Well ahead of their time.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Hi guys, thanks for the nice welcomes. At some point I'll shorten my Precisions by 1/2" as they are reshafted and have some kinda meh rubber grips. I will leave the Exploder alone since it has the original shaft and leather grip.

Big Stu, I don't have the Equalizer, just 2-9 and the Exploder which I found separately.

I'll attach another pic of my Apex PC's grips. They are leather wrap with the edge of the wrap pressed with some type of tool to give it kind of a cord feel. Sweet!
