Ping G30 vs Wilson Staff D7 & D7 Forged irons

So I currently have the G30, no real complaints, have had them for about 3 years now I guess. I am about a 14 handicap, 100 driver SS.

I have the chance to buy the Staff D7 or D7 forged for mega cheap.

Any opinions? There isnt as much press on Wilson irons as the other manufacturers. Would I see any difference?

Yes I know I should test them lol but just wondering if anyone here has tried either Wilson set

Having had the D7 and tried the D7 Forged, I would choose the Forged without a doubt. The D7 is more of a SGI than a GI, the D7 is smaller without going into the players category, less of a sole, and has a better overall feel.

I'd keep the G30s over the cast D7. Forged would be intriguing. If it were me, I'd give them a go.

PING G400 MAX 10*, Ventus Blue 6X

Cobra F6 Baffler 17,5*, AD DI 8S

Cobra F7 Hybrid 21.5*, AD DI 95S

You think I could play the forged given my game?

Like i said usually shoot between 85 and 90, I have never had an issue with my irons per se, if I'm playing bad its lost balls off the tee that kill me. I mean I'm not hitting 60% GIR but for the most part when i hit my iron it goes the distance I need it to, I rarely chunk one or have a complete mishit with the Pings....one of the reasons I guess I'm reluctant to try something new.

I agree with what Brian said above about the Forged, and also agree with Scooter on the G30's over the regular D7.

I think the question is how do you hit irons with less offset? The iron class (SGI, GI, etc) may make a small difference on slight misses. I've played PING G25s now for years and struggle hitting anything with less offset. Either the timing is slightly off or my hands/shaft lean at impact just isn't in as good of a position. As a result, I also think the trajectory / ball flight is better with the PINGs. I'm sure I could overcome it with enough practice though (I previously played forged CBs).

Personally, I'm interested in a smaller clubhead but I want a lot of offset (and probably not the thinnest sole). I can get part of the way there by bending a set strong but there are limits to that.

D7 Forged would be my likely choice. Has a lot going for it and looks great too. But I would not rule out the standard D7, even if only in the long irons. I see a few Wilson enthusiasts regularly and they rave about the distance boost with the D7.

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 10.5 w/Diamana TB 60S

PXG GEN6 5 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Yamaha RMX VD 7 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Wilson Staff Model CB 5-G w/DG s300 shafts

Edel T grind 54 w/Nippon 125 wedge shaft

Yes if distance is important d7 do great. Its longer then g410 and I struggles less getting good trajectories with it. I like that it has a bit more swing weight though my old i3 feel better then both tbh for full shots, love the d7 for pitching, chipping and the urethane feel. But the explosive nature give mega roll so need to be soft.

Highly doubt there is any sense switching except for fun :)

i can get the regular D7 for even less than the forged lol but i thought they might be the same as my Ping so I would just end up selling one set or the other.

Oqvist I agree and we wouldnt even be having this conversation if they werent so cheap lol, the only reason I'm even thinking about it. I'll never have a chance to buy irons this cheap again probably so have to take advantage and if I simply store them away for a few months then so be it.

I game the D7 Forged coming from a set of Wilson D300 (which I gamed down from a 36 to a 16 hcp) and I love everything about them. Main reason for switching was that I couldn't stand the fatness of the D300, the forgiveness of the D7 Forged is still great in my opinion, especially on low hit strikes although maybe not as much as the D7 or D300. Also the feel is fantastic when struck well, I can't say buttery smooth since I have never hit real blades and felt how it feels but coming from the D300 it feels buttery smooth in comparison, and misstruck hits you can easily determine where on the face it was hit which wasn't the case with the D300.

I would 100% say go for the Forged if you are gonna give any of em a try, you shouldn't have any problems as a 14hcp with em and going with the D7 feels like you are going backwards in term of progression.

Thanks! I think I replied to you in another thread also!

I am pretty excited, I thought the same thing about the reg D7, wouldnt change much and prob not as good as the G30.

Also the lofts on the D7 are INSANE, I'd have to redo my whole bag, the 5 iron is 22 degrees, thats currently my 4 hybrid loft. The G30 5 is 24 degrees i think.

  • 5 months later...

I had G30s, and really liked them. I started to have some issues with arthritis, and switched graphite shafts . I went to Mizuno MPX 919 HMs because they had more, and better choices in their stock shafts. Also steel shafts and graphite were the same price in the Mizuno irons. If I did not need to change shaft material, I'd probably still be using the G30s.
