I use a SunMountain 4.5 for everything. Carry - check. Pusher - check. Rider - check. It's all in what you want in a bag.

I got mine from Morton Golf sales, you might give them a call. I got mine around the time they came out. I hope it’s not discontinued, it’s a great bag.

  • 1 month later...

I just switched from a SM Phantom cart bag to a Mizuno BR-D4 stand bag.  The Phantom was great when it was strapped on the cart, push or electric but was a PITA to get in and out of my small trunk and was awkward to carry anywhere...plus I was tired of swapping clubs into my old SM stand bag when I wanted to go to the range.  I know, I'm whining. ?

Anyway I looked for a "hybrid" stand bag similar to the now unobtainable Nike.  I wanted detachable straps, full length dividers, a flat bottom (no foot) and ample storage.  I settled on the Mizuno BR-D4 which checked all the boxes for me.  The only thing I had to give up was the large cooler pocket and I solved that with a small 9-can Igloo cooler that straps to my Clicgear push cart.

Another vote for Nike Air Hybrid.  Overall very good pocket layout, good 14 way top divider, and detachable straps.  That bag does everything well.

Surprised no one has mentioned a Ping Hoofer. Great bag, has a cart strap pass through, hard to beat really.  Only drawback for me personally is I don't love the colorways this year, prefer the Hoofer Lite (which is also excellent, just a bit smaller).

If you want something that's about as big as you can get while still having a stand, check out the Titleist Hybrid 14.

Recently got a Titleist Hybrid 14 - works great for the same need you stated.

I looked at the competition in the store and the Titleist bag looked noticeably better than the Sun Mountain competitors (fit and finish).

Nike Air Hybrid was tough to find, I kicked it out as weight is a whopping 6.4 lbs.  Titleist is 5.6 (still pretty heavy - but it is a hybrid bag)

Yea, the Titleist Hybrid 14 was one of the finalists in my search too but I found a better price on the Mizuno.

Reading this thread made me do a field trial and I can confidently recommend the Sun Mountain 4.5. EZ Fit strap and wide opening as well as plenty of pockets for everything you can throw at it make it perfect for carry and 4.5 lbs don't suck either. Now with the CFB and strap pass through makes sure it stays put and doesn't turn in a riding cart makes it perfect for that as well.

Does the 2020 version have full length dividers?

Depending upon the source - I have seen where it is described as full 14 way dividers...but I don't think this is true.  The top is 14 way that is rigid for about 4", but as you go down deeper, there is material separating clubs (like nylon) vs a very 'rigid' structure.  In the end, they have to balance weight and functionality.  Rigid dividers would likely push the weight up too high.

In the end, it works very well.  I have zero problems with club tangle, midsized grips.  I had a earlier version of a Titleist 14 way (about 8 years old) and that worked fine as well.

Awesome, thanks, I am totally fine with the cloth material as a divider as that will keep the club grips from tangling up.

Haven't been able to see one in person at a shop to verify.

I just took delivery on one myself and club tangle doesn't seem to be any worse than my SM four5 14-way(circa 2013 or 14?) that it replaced.

This has been a good thread, just in time for me since I’ve had it with my CliqGear bag that falls over constantly. Lots of good comments that helped me know what to look for when shopping. I spent over an hour looking over bags at the PGA Superstore, and saw most of the ones mentioned here. I wanted 14 full length dividers, which narrowed down the list and included the Sun Mountain C130-S and one of the Titleist bags.

I don’t like that you can’t remove the straps on the Sun Mountain bag. Those straps would annoy me when on a cart. The Titleist bag has removable straps, which would be OK, but a bit of a nuisance to take on and off often. The Titleist bag didn’t seem to have enough small pockets for me.

The bag that I ended up buying was the Bag Boy Chiller Stand bag. It has 14 full length dividers that worked well when I played today, a good number of pockets, not too heavy. And it has a feature that no other bag had, a pouch to slide the strap inside when not in use. I’ve posted a photo below.

I may not use the removable cooler since I only drink bottled water on the course, but it would be a nice feature for some. I’ve only used this bag for one round, but very happy with the purchase so far.

I've got a Burton CSX stand bag that is a great hybrid.  Works well as both a stand and cart bag.  I removed the double strap and replaced it with a single strap since I only use it on my push cart or on a golf cart when playing...

I was at PGA comparing some stand bags yesterday, and the Titleist Hybrid 14-way doesn't have individual full length dividers. There were some that went all the way down, but there were other slots where after about 2-3 inches of material at the top, there was nothing separating the slots.

Now, whether that would lead to bad club tangle, I don't know.

But the SM 4.5 LS 14-way did have fabric that went all the down each individual slot, though the fabric did appear to stop about 2-3 inches from the bottom.

How do you find the single strap to be for carrying the bag around (versus the backpack style straps on most of the other carry/stand bags). I don't walk often, if ever for a round, but in the odd instance where I did, I'm wondering how the comfortable the single strap on the Bag Boy would be.

I carried my bag for years before getting my Cliq Gear push cart, so I’ll advise a bag with the backpack style straps if you ever plan to carry for 18 holes. They are far superior for long distances. The single strap on the Bag Boy is fine, and for me actually preferable if you don’t carry. It’s sufficient for going to the range or short distances, and there’s less to stow away when on a cart.

I’ve now used this bag for half a dozen rounds and really like it, much better than my old Cliq Gear bag.

Yeah, I don't foresee walking a full 18 any time soon. I usually take a cart, and if I did walk, I would likely use a push cart. I've got a Sun Mountain Phantom cart bag, which I like. But it's not alway ideal for the range since some ranges have the plastic stands you can set it on, others don't. And they never have those in the short game areas of the range, so I've been looking at pickup up a stand bag.

I'm basically down to the Bag Boy Chiller Hybrid, Sum Mountain 4.5 LS, or the Mizuno BR-D4. I just have to decide whether I want to stick with the 14-way top like the Phantom has, something in the 4-6 way range (SM has 4 or 14 way on the 4.5 and Mizuno has 6 or 14 way on the BR-D4).
