Sounds like you may have found your holy grail 3 wood.  That is nice.  If I could get that much more ball speed than something else, Id insta buy.  I have the gen 2 fairways now that I like.  I use a 16* head so probably wont upgrade it.  Looking into getting the Gen 4 driver though!

at first glance I wasn't sold on the gen4 stuff but now really want them!!! I was ready to give up on looking for a proto head and just order a gen4 3w

but yea like you said I should stop my 3w search and play what I know works...but thats impossible to not buy new equipment lol

I just returned a SIM2 Max 5f with their watered down Ventus without Velocore  and at times it was going further than my Ping G410 LST 3. I just hate watered down shafts, can never trust them in the heat of the moment. PXG fitting tomorrow and going to give the Gen4 a go and see what they got performance wise.

yea that shaft sucks when trying to get reliable info.... im dying to know how the gen4 stuff works so ill be following along!! a gen4 3w would look awesome with my av raw orange shaft

good luck!

Yea AD XC oddly is not a good fit for me. Its usually a shaft that should work for me spec wise but my timing and strikes were all over the place.... AV Raw Orange is awesome. great feel and not low spin like Pro Orange. The dispersion with it was much tighter also

SIM had KBS TD 70 cat4 (x flex). The KBS wood shafts are highly underrated and dont get enough love. The SIM Max 3w had a Tensei Pro Orange so it was surprising to see the higher launch and super low spin. The other SIM Max was driver with KBS TD 60 cat4. SIM Max driver I found most of the year to be slower speed wise. The PXG Proto driver I sit around 163

Ideally what im looking for is the pxg proto launch and spin numbers with closer to SIM speed. If I got it to around 155 id be happy. I have the woods weight kit so maybe I just need to mess with the weights in the proto to get optimal numbers

I dont know whats ideal or how big a drop it should be, but on averages I find it weird im around 163 ball speed with driver and 10mph slower with 3w. I dont know if thats normal or not

Thanks for this and certainly something in the CB and EI profile on the Orange work for you.  I agree with you on the KBS TD and all KBS wood shafts for that matter.  Always overlooked since they are so well known for the iron shafts.

Sometimes we get tied to ball speed as the key output number and I am no different. I think here we are close, and maybe a little head weight (mass) can help...even 2.5 grams can yield 4-5mph ball speed in my experience. Since the launch angle and spin profile are so good, I would take the proto head and orange shaft and add 2.5 grams somewhere that is behind strike point or behind the miss spot of the face to start.  Then I would see where we are and look at ball flight and yardage...you might notice get lucky here and take it from there.  Depending on what your testing or playing as a ball, we can always take a little spin but alter the flight characteristics which play another 2-3 mph on ball speed on GCQuad (sometime more on trackman outdoors). You are close...excited to see how this turn out.

I bought a Gen4 3 & 5 today at my fitting. Having owned both a Gen2 2F (Fujikura Pro 2.0 S) and a Proto 3F (Diamana S+ 70g S), I will say the Gen4 ball speed, dispersion and feel are better over those models. Nothing dramatic, but noticeable! Gen4 is really easy to hit off the deck, unlike Gen2, which the fitter acknowledged was a common issue they heard about the Gen2 3F thus the 16 degree Gen2 was released. The Proto head's feel is a little harsher compared to Gen4 and produced a slightly more spinning ball. Both are coming with the Diamana S+ 70g X, since the fitter helped me solve my issues with this particular shaft and it was performing on par with other upcharge shafts we tried during the fitting.

SIM TI is money when struck right, my problem was striking it right.  Switched back to Gen2 from SIM because I needed forgiveness and low spin (hard to find) And the Gen2 performed well in that space

proto 3w and proto 2h were money for me this weekend

The driver has been the best club in my bag since September...but this proto hybrid is quickly becoming my favorite club ever. looks great behind the ball and it flat out produces. Ive always been a utility/driving iron guy and I even have the gen 2 utility, but the 2h has pretty much permanently knocked that out the bag

I’m pretty sure the Proto 5wood is going to replace my Gen2 17hybrid for full

time honors in the bag. It’s so easy to hit and really forgiving compared to the Gen2 17 which was easy to hit. Easier than easy and seems to be about the same length just a higher trajectory with the 5wood turned to little minus. Really happy with all the positive recommendations. It’s real.

Right?!? I would cause I love the 5 so much....problem is I really have deminshing returns distance wise when I hit 3weirds really anything below 16.5/17 degrees off the deck. I think the top of my bag is pretty set:

Driver Proto+ or SIM2Max

5wood Proto little minus (17.5ft,7.5toe,2.5heel)

Either Gen2 Hybrid 22 turned to 20(big minus) or Gen2 X 20* driving iron

thanks Osprey for turning me into this fun fairway. Has really become a Goto club as of late vs the Gen2 hybrid which is awesome on its own right just not as easy as the 5.

What weight setup seems to be working well in the Proto 3w head?

I play my Gen 2 at 215g and my Proto 3w just came in with 2.5/2.5/12.5g weights with an overall weight of 206g.

Bought it used, so I was not able to order it to a spec weight.

I would like to be in the 210-215g range, but curious what others have found bring the head to life.  Hope to play it with my current Tensei Pro Blue 70s but have Diamana DF & BF 80s arriving this week that will most likely get a run in it.  Need to swap the Callaway adapters to PXG, but hope to have it all set for the weekend and give it a proper trial.  Just using lead tape at the moment but plan on buying some weights once I figure out the head weight I like.

First round at the range with the Proto 3w (lead taped) was nice enough that the Gen 2 is now up on the Bay.

Ordered some extra weights from PXG when I got home so that I can clean it up without lead tape for future rounds.

Might be the inevitable honeymoon with a new club (to me at least) but hit some balls that had me shaking my head in a good way.

Looking forward to getting it out on the course for a proper trial.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just ordered a 5w and 7w proto today while they are still available and discounted.  I officially kicked the the 3 wood out of my bag last year. I am hoping the PXG's beat the Ping G410's out of my bag. Came so close to ordering the 0211 fairways instead of the 03411 Proto but just felt like I might have always been thinking ...."maybe I should have bought the proto?"

Smart. 0211 fairways are not bad, but Proto’s are REALLY good.

The 0211s, in my short fitting experience, were ever so slightly more forgiving on mis-hits.  The Proto, when you hit the sweet spot... the 0211 couldn't touch it.  It felt and sounded money, and went further.  Both fairways and hybrids were the same in that aspect.  I just couldn't find the sweet spot often enough with the fairways, as has been my struggle with fairways from any brand.  Love my Proto Hybrids.  I didn't even try the Gen 4, I don't know how they could possibly be better (for me).

Enjoy the new clubs!
