Srixon Z 585 vs. P790 vs. i500

For this who have tried these, how would you compare the forgiveness in terms off off-center strikes?

I've owned both the P790's and i500's, and I'm intrigued by the Z 585's, especially since I can find them discounted right now. 

Any other comparison's of distance, workability, etc. would be appreciated.

I have the Z585 right now. I would say they are a little less forgiving on off center strikes than the P790s. I have not demo'd the i500s so nothing to offer up there. Z585s were a little more consistent in distance for me. P790s launched a little lower and therefore could fly a little further dependent on spin. Z585s gave me more consistent launch and spin numbers, also felt a little softer than the 790s.

 

Caveat, just realized I am talking previous line 790s, not the current line.

I have the 17’ P790 currently in my bag, tested the Srixons when I was originally shopping for irons. P790 are longer and more forgiving. Srixons are more consistent and feel softer. I needed forgiveness most so that’s the reason I went with the p790.

I love Srixon irons but for a full set I’d go the new version of the P790. Great looking iron.

I own both the P790 (2019 version) and the Srixon 565 (previous version) and have hit the i500s.

 

Not a fan of Ping. Was a huge fan many years ago, but their newer stuff just doesnt suit my eye or swing.

 

Feel goes to Srixon - but even then, since its a bonded (welded) face that is designed to provide higher ball speeds and more distance, it doesnt have that buttery single piece forging feel. Z785 will definitely provide more of that. 

Forgiveness goes to P790 - can mishit the center of the face quite a bit and not be penalized as bad as the Srixon. Same multi material construction as P790.

 

For me, added distance, forgiveness, consistent ball flight and dispersion is the reason I am currently playing P790s over the Srixon. 

 

There are some minor things I need to consider before completely committing to P790s though.

I am huge on sound and feel of a well struck ball. P790s (and in my opinion, most non single piece irons) just dont give me that audible and impact "feel" that I enjoy.

'17 790s just didn't spin enough for me with the shafts I was playing at the time. But I wonder if now the Project X LZ's that I game would get better results out of the 2019 790s? I will prob test them again early next year

I found the 585s to be the most forgiving. Especially for thin shots, where the p790 actually is not very forgiving. To me, the 585s are the easiest to hit iron of the players (GI) irons out there.

The 585's are the longest, most forgiving, best feeling of the three mentioned. Outside of Golfwrx, Srixon is vastly underrated.

I owned the z585 and I could not get rid of them quick enough. Feel was great but if you naturally draw the ball it becomes a BIG draw! A lot of others have said this.

I ended up getting fitted and tested the P790, I500’s and the T200’s. For me the most forgiving were the I500’s. This is the first set of Ping irons I have ever owned as well. On thin shots I didn’t loose distance and I wasn’t getting those crazy random bombs that I was getting when I tested the P790’s.

Good observation Joe,  I tested these two clubs extensively head to head, and I found I wanted to like the Srixon better (I actually preferred the look and feel at impact), but I just kept slamming them left.

I have hit all three irons. I currently play the z585 in my long irons. I can say that the Z585 are more forgiving of all three listed, and longest of them as well. I also found them similar in length to Cobra Forged tec (2020). The srixons feel so much better/give better feedback than all the other irons mentioned.

I know you are looking for a discount, but the new ZX5 irons look awesome. Not sure how much of a performance upgrade they will be over the 585's.

I have tried both and loved them both. But if I have to choose only one, I would go with the Srixon Z585. I love the looks of the P790 but I like the feel and the look of the Z585 at address. As for forgiveness, I feel they are about the same. P790 may be longer than the Z585.

How would you guys describe the feel of the i500?  I tried only the 3i as a driving iron years ago and was not a fan, but I don't feel like a 3i is fair to judge a whole set on.  Lol.
