Off the rack or a custom one off putter?

Would you go with a $300 off the rack putter with the right length, loft, lie and grip OR a custom made one off putter by the same manufacturer made just for you and your putting tendencies at $900?

A true custom one off is going to be a lot more than $900. Limited releases are usually nothing of a grand. Double that for a true custom that not just paint fill and stamping on a OTR

What is more important to you?

 

Would suggest getting fitted - with real evidence / results - before buying either.   Example = I know I do best in a 33" putter at x loft....but head design, weighting, alignment aid visuals all important as well and should be taken into consideration.   Using a trusted fitter should be able to help you here.

 

Buying a $1,500 club won't necessarily make you a better putter - but if you put value on a custom putter, then maybe it is something you should go for.

I was fitted by the tour department via a Zoom call due to pandemic. So everything you mentioned has been taken into consideration. Being LH it’s harder to find what I want. I don’t know if I will make more putts with the custom but I know it is 100% fit for me which only leaves practice left in the equation.

Sounds like both will be fitted for you so really it comes down to is $900 too much for you to spend? For some $900 is nothing for others it's unimaginable to spend especially on a putter. Also do you want something unique that is 100% yours or just something everyone else has as you don't care about exclusivity.

 

For me being a lefty as well and since you mentioned it's a Ping PLD putter I would probably splash the cash seeing as I'm not much of a fan on their OTR offerings. Now if I had the chance to get a Dale Anser with a flow neck and either smooth face or light lines then yes I'm throwing $900 at them so fast. But it all comes down to you to make the decision.

Worth it. I feel a putter is the most important club in the bag. I too am a lefty, one of the reasons why i was drawn to PXG.

i love my 'expensive' custom one-off...

however i know i can put just as well with an OTR. 

 

personal preference.

I'd be quite upset every time I missed a 5 footer with a $900 putter.  I'd feel better missing them with my $80 putter.

Literally anything they do to it, that isn't available otr, would by definition make it "custom".  I'd assume different necks, alignment aids, face milling/grooves, weight ect. are options available for a "custom" putter from them. Maybe even finishes as well. Shaft options, all things that are not available options on their otr offerings. 

 

If the money aint a big deal to you, go for it. Just know your putter can never be an excuse for a missed putt after that lol.

I am actually not trying to be a smart a**. If i can get a one off for under a grand im in. Betti's start at $2k, SC who knows.

Is it going to be a milled head from Ping?  I know they have a custom department but, as already mentioned, I thought the PLD was for Pro's and more expensive than $900 bucks.  If it isn't a solid milled head, I would forget it, even if it's "only" $900.
But hey, if you have a connection and that is the price, then go for it.  If you're a Pro and have access, then you probably didn't need to come here and ask us if that is what you should do.  You would already know that.
Personally, I would check out Black Lab and see what Chip could make for you.  A lot less than $900 and you can customize it however you like.
