New Tommy armour 845

So I’m at my GFs place this weekend and I went to the local Dicks and was checking out the local stock since the bigger golf stores are an hour and some change away. 
After perusing the new TSi stuff and the used section, I was looking at the irons on the racks and seen these 

 

I was wondering if there is already a thread or if y’all were up on these. 
what’s the story?? 
 They kinda got a ap3 vibe to them looks wise, I wish I took a picture of the top line but they were compact relatively speaking

Dicks owns Tommy Armour now, its their brand. These 845s are the 3rd? gen stuff since they started making them.  Decent clubs for a lower price.

I haven’t been in dicks for a while. Yeah it looks to have some discernible tech, I wonder how they play

Not sure about these clubs but saw a few good reviews of the Tommy Armour Atomics. Those can be had at a great price.

Back in the day, the Silver Scott 845s were a very popular iron.

Got my set back in the late `80's...included a 1 iron.  Kept them about 10 years til late 90's.

First set of cavity irons for me at the time.

I believe that Golfworks helped in designing those, so should be quality irons.

The Tommy Armour 845s and variants were very popular perimeter-weighted irons from about 1988 to 1995, occupying center stage timewise between the Ping Eye2s and the early King Cobra irons.

 

The recent Tommy Armour 845s - woods, hybrids and  irons - are a house brand for Dick's released for the 2020 market. Not sure how things fared in the COVID era.

 

For irons the new 845 family included the 845 Forged, the 845, and the 845 Max. The GD Hot List pegged the Forged as Players Distance, got a Silver rating. Only 500 sets of the Forged were made. One drawback: Dick's reps report the stock shaft is the only one available.

 

We'll see what happens to the new-wave 845s post- COVID.

Prompted by the drop in price from $999 to $599, I decided to give them a shot at the local Golf Galaxy.  I didn't go into the store with purchasing them, mind you, I was actually going in to compare some other irons (P790s, i500, T400s) and tested the Armour just for fun.  They looked liked quality irons on the rack and they felt pretty good in the hand and at address.  I also threw in the 620MB just for fun to see with my swing how it would compare to the distance/forgiveness of the modern tech.  

Needless to say, the 620 MBs felt amazing, but my dispersion was all over the place even on mildly mishit shots.  It was a fun thing to try, though.  I'm not new to blades, I have sets of Wilsons from the 50s, some 1970 Haig Ultras, and some Mizuno MP14s that I love to use every few rounds to keep my honest, but I wanted to try a modern one and the results were effectively the same.  When it came to the distance with forgiveness type irons, I hit all of them well.  The i500 was the longest by a couple of yards and all had similar forgiveness in the mishits that I inevitably produce.  What surprised me was the Armours.  I lost about a yard on average distance but didn't lose any accuracy which could very well be due to the shaft differences.  The Armours felt really smooth and the TT Elevate shafts with whatever they are calling "sensicore" these days, seemed to make a noticeable difference on damping.  I expected these shafts might promote me getting too much height, but the results weren't disagreeable.  In the end, I was carrying 7-8 yards further than my current gamers (bio-cell+) with a good increase in accuracy.

In the end, at 50% of the price of the others, I couldn't make any argument to spend twice as much for 1-2 yards in performance between them when I didn't also see a big improvement in dispersion, as well.  I haven't brought them out on the course yet, but will be next week and I'll report back how they performed out there.

Same here minus the 1-iron. These irons were way ahead of their time and so forgiving. Really like the brushed look as well. A total winner any way you look at it.
