Hi lofted 5 wood or low lofted 7 wood?

Recommended Posts

I need spin and higher launch.

Want to play 16* and 19* woods this season.

Love my 22 hybrid as it does as described above.

So now looking to gap.

Like to hear your suggestions of a 19*.

Take a 5 wood higher in loft or a 7 wood and turn it down?

Advantages of one ever the other?

Same with 16*.

3 wood brought up or 5 wood brought down.

Looking at the G425 woods.

Thanks and be well all.

FORE!!!

Really personal taste.  I've played 15* 3 woods lofted up to 16*.  I am currently playing an 18* 5 wood dialed down to 17*.  Then a 21* 7 wood dialed down to 20*.  Then a 21* 4 hybrid dialed up to 22*.  I also have a 24* 5 hybrid with the same shaft that I can dial down to 23* or throw into the bag in lieu of the 5 iron.

3 wood, bigger head so easier to look down at off the tee than a 5 wood.  5 wood, though a slightly smaller head, seems a bit more forgiving, hence why it is in my bag over the 3 wood.  5 wood more versatile off the deck.  7 wood a real pleasure, off the tee and the deck.  YMMV.

Hear ya on all points. Thanks!

Problem here is we can't demo yet. Very few sims opened as we are just coming out of lockdown.

Still open to hear from others.

I have woods at 16.5, 18, and 21 in my bag.  They work great.   Personally, I wouldn't worry about dialing in  + or - 1 degree for gapping.  Unless you have really high chs, it's not going to have any real world difference.  And even then, it's minimal.  I need the right shaft for my fairways to work well.

Ive settled on a 16.5 fw at 42.25”, 21 fw at 41”, and 23 hyb turned down to 22 deg at 39”.

The combination of shaft length and head type provides a good yardage gap.

As a general rule, I prefer to adjust loft down rather than up to avoid closing the face angle.

A 5W lofted up if you have trouble squaring the face. A 7W lofted down if you want a slightly open face to counter leftish misses.

Above all, make a choice and don't overthink it.

Like the others have said, it'll depend on what face angle you want or need. I'm playing higher lofted woods set lower and flatter. My miss is left and setting the face open and lie flat it really helps me eliminate that side of the golf course.

Thanks all!

Yes I play a draw (irons and driver). Fairways off the deck are my least confident shot and this is what I'm looking for in a FW.

Not a fan of a large headed 3 woods. Believe the 425s are more forgiving and maybe the 5 wood is ideal.

(again I'm big on demoing and we can't right now arrrrg)

With your input my gut is leaning towards...

G400 hybrid 22* currently in the bag.

- G425 7 wood lofted at 20*

- 4 wood- G425 5 wood lofted down to 16.5/17 with a 3 wood length shaft.

Now I must guess on shafts....lol

I have a similar setup to what you're thinking. Love my G410 22° hybrid. Even though my G410 7 wood is 20.5° which seems too close to the hybrid, the additional shaft length gives it 15-20 more yards versus the hybrid. Then from there, I have the G410 5 wood turned a degree down to 16.5° so it's in 4 wood territory. Finally found a setup that works for me, as fairway woods off the deck were my nemesis. Haven't tried the G425 fairway woods yet, but if I do, it will be in the same setup. Those G410s are so easy to hit from the turf, which is something I've struggled with my entire life.

As you say fw off deck least confident. My guess is you feel more confident with hybrid due to shorter shaft. Unless you are consistent with center face contact with fw, shorter shaft is usually better. My recommendation is 5 & 7 wood, lofted down. I would not recommend a 3w shaft in 5 wood. IMO only. Good luck in your experiment.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally had some warmer weather up here in the great White North.

Have to say I’m very impressed with the Ping 425 range in woods and hybrids. They sound and feel more solid compared to the 400 range (less tinny) and more forgiving, more consistent spin wise. The “Facewrap Technology and Spinsistency” really works!

Bought both the 425 3 wood and 5 wood and put them head-to-head on the range both at 16*.

Had to keep them taped up but since it’s a comparison it got the job done.

3 wood felt too unwieldy off the deck. No doubt the 5 launched higher and more consistently. Was even able to deloft all the way down to 16° and it still gave me an excellent flight. Feels powerful.... for me lol.

question:

how does one adjust for both loft and lie?

5 wood was turning over a bit (draw). Don’t mind but would like to try the lie adjustment while also lofting down  (found it!... all good)

Frustratingly I cannot demo different shafts but so far I’m happy with what I have and will be returning the 3 wood.

425 7 wood with stock Alta CB is on its way.

Will try it at both 20* and 19*

Decided to pick up the 425 4 hybrid as well (easy decision with the 50% extra buy back til April on my older 400s). Like the idea of being able to adjust loft as there’s no doubt that it’s a more powerful club than my earlier 400.

At some point I will have to get on a Sim and get real numbers and tweak the  clubs for gapping but I am quite content and excited.

My guess is the 4 hybrid will end up at 23* and flat (up from the current G400 at 22*) and the 7 at 19 or 20* also with the flat setting.

Thanks all again for your input and have a fun and healthy golf season this year!

Fore!!!

Just picked up a pxg 0341x gen 2 7 wood to fit in between my 4 iron and cobra f6 baffler at 17.5. Going to play the 7 wood at 21 and 41.5"  like the baffler. I play a strong 3 wood as a second tee club mainly. The baffler is much easier to hit off the deck. And is a controllable shot into a green around 220yds for me.

I have tested 3, 5 & 7 woods and have played all combinations. I am now back on the 5 wood lofted up instead of the 7 wood lofted down mainly due to my miss slightly moving over time with swing changes etc.

Found that I can easily deloft a 5/7 wood and play from the deck or off the tee if needed and was more versatile that having a lower lofted wood. So now I just play a 5 wood at 19* (with the 7 wood shaft), hybrid as a 3 iron basically and then a Srixon 4ut (amazing club BTW). If I am more than 255yard away and trying to hit a par 5 in two I have bigger issues that not having a lower lofted fairway wood to get me there.
