Golf Trip to Pittsburgh

Dear all,

Need some advice and help from the Pittsburgh WRXers! Thanks in advance. 

My group of four get a chance to play at Oakmont around early May this year. We will fly in from California, and we are planning for another two more rounds in the area. 

I will really appreciate if someone can give me some advice on some good course options within a driving distance.

Stone Wall is pretty cool. Back 9 built into a hillside. Good shape and fun course.

 

If you can find someone to get onto Laurel Valley CC, it’s on par with Oakmont.

Wow, Oakmont - awesome. I live about 20 miles from there, but haven't played it. I also live about 5 miles from Birdsfoot and it is a decent track. Not many will be on par with Oakmont.

Laurel Valley and Fox Chapel are fun

Add in Nevillewood and the Field Club and you have all the good private golf in the city covered.

Cranberry  Highlands is a great public course

No course is like Oakmont that you will play in Pittsburgh. Somebody knows somebody to get to play it. Totteridge is a great public course as well as Stonewall. After you realize how hard Oakmont is you might welcome a much easier course. Have fun and post your scores there.

Thanks for all the information. Guys. I've tried, but no luck on Laurel Valley for our foursome group. So I ended up book the Olde Stone Wall after read it ranked as #1 public course in the state. Hopefully, the mid May weather is perfect in PA.

Hey, bud, I might post some on course pictures, but I doubt if I want to show how ugly the score would be.

I walked on that course couple of days back the US Open time. Man, it is The Hardest course I've ever personally seen.. 

Still very excited!!!

Weather in May should be fine aside from the chance of rain. We have been playing at least twice a week since the last week February.

Why is Oakmont so hard? Long carries? Pure length? Bunkers? Rough? Greens? Maybe all of the above!

Id also advise you to add a day & get to Nemacolin (for 36) or Omni Bedford Springs ... hell add 2 days

This is a helpful discussion I’m keeping an eye on. Going to be in Pittsburg in august and want to try and get on Oakmont but if not then I will look at some of these other options.

I second the Stonewall round.  The course should be perfect in May.  Cranberry Highlands is pretty nice, but wont be anything like Oakmont or Stonewall.

FYI just because full paying members don't want random people on their golf course that does not make them snooty.

I got to play OCC in May of 2018. Best experience of my life. 

 

I played in a Monday qualifier at Green Oaks CC (in Verona right down the road) club years back. Not sure if it's private or not, but it was a quirky little "old days" muni style course that was in absolute pristine condition.  Not a lot of character to it, but the condition of the course made it stand out.
