Tiger stepping Again:) If I play x100s, how do you go up a flex and use an 8 iron?

My understanding was you go up a flex for wedges but use an 8 iron shaft. If I already use x100 shafts, what do you do? thanks

No, that's not tiger stepping. That's the spinner trick - trying to duplicate the DG Spinner wedge shaft profile.  Tiger stepping is going from x100's (taper tip) in the irons to using tipped s400's (also taper) in the wedges.  That was done to adjust to the fact that TT no longer made a dedicated wedge shaft and people had to start using the 9i shaft in the wedges.

They are two very different things - so forget the name for a second and think about the question of what do you really want to accomplish and why?   If we know that, there is a much better chance someone here can offer a useful solution.

incorreclty-named Tiger stepping and Spinner trick

You could go X7 8 iron if you really need to, but the heavier S400 might be a fit. Hard to say on paper. Both are a bit heavier in the wedge but can impact ball flight differently. X7 could lower launch and up spin. S400 is more suited for partials.

thanks, I would like a lower traj with wedges--so would that be the 8iron shaft in the wedge?

Yes.  The point of that being to get a overall stiffer shaft from going up in flex (so less forward bend) but one that doesn't actually feel stiffer (because of the soft stepping).   But how much it will help will always depend on how full a swing and how late a release.

But I'm not sure of what shaft you could use to do that if you already play x100's in the irons.  Maybe x7 or c-taper or steelfiber x-stiff  - they have a stiffer tip profile?

Personally, if you want to lower trajectory it's gong to be a lot easier and cheaper to just bend the lofts stronger.

thanks,

I don't want to hit the wedges farther, just reading about it, it seemed like an easy way to hit a lower shot...

Using a shaft that is significantly stiffer than the shafts that fit you in your irons, is not really a good idea.  It 'might' lower your shot height a bit, but you will lose feel and won't be beneficial for less than full shots.

Have you tried an X100 straight into a sand wedge?  That's what i'd do.  If you want softer feeling wedges that don't necessarily go higher on full shots, then an S400 is what most have had success with.

Remember though, that an X100 "straight in" is already going to be softer in wedges, because it's a 9 iron shaft.

Good players hit lower wedges with technique,... not by using a shaft that is stiffer than their iron shafts

I’ve played flighted 6.0 rifles or ctaper 120’s forever. I have 7.0 rifle 8 iron shafts in my wedges and love them.

Stick with X100's or S400's in the standard wedge shaft and work on your delivery characteristics to reduce launch and spin.

I play X100's in my irons and recently put X100's in my wedges after playing last season with S400. The S400's launch slightly lower and have slightly more spin but my feel and distance control is much better with X100s.

I may be alone here but I have been struggling with fitting a proper wedge shaft in my irons for a few years, the best before my current set would have been the C-Taper 130X 8 iron shaft  in my 56 and 60 deg wedges when I was playing the C-Taper 125S+ in my irons.  my issue with wedges was center strikes, I have always felt to much toe down inconsistency with other shafts.

I tend to stay away from TT DG's myself though I know it is popular shaft, I stay away from them due to the soft butt section and the feel of loosing the clubhead during transition so I have to admit I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask to compare.

If you like the feel of the TT DG's as mentioned above maybe the X7's are the way to go in an 8 iron shaft which should reduce some inconsistencies

did you have the C-Taper 130X 8 iron shaft cut down to wedge length, 35 or 36 inch?

Stuart,

    If I had a set of 7-pw of x100,

I heard that the 9 iron shaft is basically a wedge shaft-is that true?

And to use the 7 and 8 as wedge shafts--that would be ss 1x or 2x w 7 iron--is it noticeable? thanks Bill

Yes, the 9 and wedge shafts use the same 37" x100 shaft.

If you use the 37.5" - 8 iron shaft in the 9 and wedges the you have soft stepped the shafts 1x.

Or you could just use the 8i shaft in the 9i and continue to use the 9i/W in the W.

Both are perfectly valid approaches when soft stepping - and both approaches are commonly done by builders.

Personally, I doubt anyone would notice the difference between those two different approaches.   There is a reason TT didn't bother with (or stopped making) a separate W shaft.
