3 wood or 2 hybrid

Recommended Posts

Hi, I carry a 3 wood but rarely hit it. Probably due to confidence but also due to course length. I have a Ping G410 3 hybrid which I really like and am thinking about replacing my 3 wood with a #2 hybrid, possibly delofting it to around 15 degrees.

Any thoughts in this? What are the best hybrids people are using?

TIA

It will go shorter due to shorter shaft (=less ballspeed). But it should be easier to hit, flies higher/lands softer, can be flighted low and will actually be usable out of medium rough, which are the reasons I replaced my 3W with a 2H.

For me, it’s the safe option off the tee on narrow holes, but goes longer than the typical 3H/3i that most people use in that scenario. I have a Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 at 16* and love it to death. Absolute rocket launcher, plus it’s a fixed hosel design and a pretty small clubhead. I get asked all the time „what is this sorcery?!“ when I’m not much shorter than other people‘s driver (if I flush it).

You might wanna think about a little more weight or stiffness in the shaft, it helps me to eliminate that dreaded hook. I have an Evenflow Black 70 or 75 g, S flex in it, and it’s pretty stable.

As you can see in my sig, I carry both 3 metal and 2 hybrid.  There is a 15 to 20 yard gap between both so I'm g2g.  You should be basing your set up based on what your comfortable gapping your distances.

I carry a 3-wood and am currently auditioning 3 different 4w, 3hl, and 5w to fit the gap to 4 iron. I have tried endlessly to get along with my 818H2 and just can't. I'm just not a hybrid guy. I hit it left 4 out of 5 times and only carry it 220, max, where my 3w is 250+.

My course has a few holes that requires a 230/240 shot to have a good shot in. Anything longer and you are rolling out into a hazard. And wind into you with a 220 club could mean a vary long iron or even water. It all depends on what gaps you need and where/how you play I guess.

Callaway supper hybrid dialed down to 16* is pretty darn close for me. When i connect it is a solid 245 with roll due to its low spin nature.

Driver: Callaway Epic Max LS with Ventus Black 6x 44.5"

4w: '22 Rogue ST LS 16.5  Tensei AV Blue 75x

7w: '22 Callaway Apex UW 21 80s MMT

DI: Caley 01X 18* with KBS PGH 95

4-AW: PXG OG 0211  with KBS Tour Stiff 2.5* up 3/4" long MOI matched

Wedges: Cleveland Zipcore 54 Full/58 Mid

Putter: DF2.1 35"69* in blue

Ball: Srixon Z-star XV

I have both that I interchange. My hybrid is 16* and my 3/4wood is 16.5*

The hybrid will get brought to the home course because it has two par 5’s that aren’t reachable. (Yes, that includes WRX bombers, unless they are able to fly it 310-320 in the air off the tee.) Once you go past 275 yards it just will roll down hill into the water, so you are forced to lay up 250-260 tops. The two par 5’s on the back are reachable with good drives, with mid irons, if you can hit it high enough to cut the corner off the dog leg which I can do with a driver, so the 3 wood isn’t needed.

The course my buddy plays the 3/4 wood goes in the bag because it has some long par 5’s that you can hit in two if you can hit a couple of bombs. One is 576 yards, one is 568 yards, one is 605 yards and there is one on the front that is more like a long par 4 at 478 yards, slightly up hill and straight away.

Some companies make a Tour version of their fairway woods and I have found this to be a happy medium. I went this route because I didn’t like hitting a traditional modern large 3W off the deck. This is a Cobra F9 Tour 4/5W at 16* loft and 42” length. It is working out very well.
