First of all thanks for all the great info you guys provide here, its been a huge help planning my first AZ golf trip!  Traveling out on Thursday 11-11, with a buddy (5 and a 12 handicap) and looking to fill out a few tee times working around the overseeding.  Surprised at the lack of open tee times, many top places are pretty booked up already, but this is what we have booked so far...

Thursday PM- Open

Friday  AM Quintero/ PM open, may try to replay

Saturday AM-Legend Trail / PM- Troon North, Pinnacle

Sunday AM -Open.

courses we are considering, open to suggestions...

Southern Dunes-  11-3 re-open

Grayhawk Talon 10-3 re-open

Verrado Victory 10-8 re-open

Gold canyon  Sidewinder 9-12 re-open

TPC Champions  10-3 re-open

All good choices, EXCEPT Sidewinder - that is one of the worst courses in AZ.  Seriously advise against considering it under any circumstance!

Talon, SD and Victory are great options!

Agree that you should choose the other courses over Sidewinder, but come on @puttnforthe8, I can think of many other mid tier courses well below Sidewinder. Heck, I may be in the minority but I’d rather play Sidewinder over the Mickey Mouse/goofy golf layout of Dinosaur. Not saying Sidewinder is anything special but it’s far from one of the worst courses in Az.

There's not many imo.  Dino at least as aesthetic value.   It is a terrible design; terrible layout; often in horrid condition; it also attracts very slow play.  I admit, I am biased - it is the only course I have ever walked off - and I was -3 after 9 and walked off because POP was 3:25 for the 9.

What's the thought on Southern Dunes, with an 11-3 re-open are we best to stay away?  Thanks!

A week out to a month out can be pretty much the same; or can be markedly better.  SD is Troon managed and they have plenty of resources.  A week out at SD will be better than a lot other places a month out is my opinion.  Plus the price paid for a round in those condition will not wreck your head as compared to paying $200 for some other places.

But all courses will CPO, slower and wetter no matter what.

I haven't played Sidewinder but did play Dinosaur Mtn once.  It is a little weird but we had a good time and pace of play wasn't bad for us that day at least.  Also played Southern Dunes and it is by far a better test of golf than Dino.

Played Rancho mañana today. Cpo but greens were in decent shape. Really nice course.

Any suggestions for tomorrow closer to Scottsdale and South of $100.? Played starfire, to hum course compared to BM.

Sincere apologies - if you consider RM a "really nice course", not sure anyone can offer you any appropriate suggestions. 😂

But you won't find much under $100 near Scottsdale and it will likely have to be in the afternoon.  Since you consider RM to be nice, you can try Biltmore, McCormick Ranch or Orange Tree.

We must have caught Rancho on a good day. Service and conditions were excellent.

Being from Chicago, guess we are less picky😎

As a desert native, playing golf in suburban Chicago made me realize how much I dislike desert golf 🤷‍♂️

  • 2 weeks later...

Regarding Southern Dunes, we played on 10/31 (been open...). Great shape but two issues: bunkers are more dirt/rocks than sand. Greens v/ slow as to be expected out of overseed. My biggest issue is that they have a mosquito problem - got no less than a dozen bites. Bring bug spray.
