Discolored White Polo’s

Any advice on how to get them WHITE again?
 

I have 2 nice under amour polos that have gotten discolored in the wash. They are the iso-chill model and I love them and hoping for some advice on saving them. They almost look like they have a light brownish tint to them like they’re dirty. I tried soaking them in stain remover overnight and that didn’t do anything. Not sure what went wrong… I always wash in cold water and like colors.

Short answer is buy new ones......Long answer:

 

White shirts, hats, and shorts/pants all have a shelf life.   You can try using a spray bottle with water & bleach, try to be careful around the logo's, let it sit 5 minutse and then run thru the washer again but I'd temper my hope with that type of material.  

 

Others have suggested Lime Away blended with water, never tried it buy may work better than bleach on the poly fabric of UA.  Let me know if you do....... 

 

I just assume they'll get dogged out after a season or two and I try to not wear my nicer one's from clubs I've visited when I know it's going to be a hot sweaty day.

Chances are if you've run them through the washer/dryer cycle a few times with them being discolored then nothing you can do now will fix it.

 

The only way I've found to keep my polos white longer is to wash them separately with hot water and oxyclean. Then make sure they are still 100% white before putting them in the dryer.

Tide Hygienic Clean.  And there’s a chance you might need to clean your washing machine as well.

Anytime I wear white I pretty much walk in the house and immediately get them in the washing machine after spot cleaning any stains or the inside of the collar and such.  Like others have said the shelf life of a white golf clothes is not very long as it is a matter of time before they get a stain on them that you can't get out.  I have stopped buying white polos unless it is a shirt that I intend to wear off the course because it is just so much easier to deal with any color other than white.  I do have white TW shoes that I have kept looking new for a a couple years but that is because I clean them immediately after every time that I wear them without fail.  I guess that is one good thing that I learned from the military when we had to shine our boots everyday only to have them get scuffed up again the next day!

Even if they’ve been dried, follow this plan:

 

fill a bucket with water, oxiclean and a quarter cup of white vinegar. 
 

Take the garment and use dawn dish detergent and rub the stain with the dawn vigorously. This loosens up the stain from the fiber. 
 

Place the garments in the bucket. About every 3 hours, come by and move the garment around in the bucket. After 24 hours, take it out and put them in the washer and use oxiclean again in your laundry cycle. Should remove all the discoloration.

Try bleach in hotwater, that's your best bet. Like others have said white will always eventually turn less white.

Please don’t use bleach. It destroys the fiber and eventually will turn it a shade of grey as it dissolves the color.

Not at the same time. But Oxiclean (if its organic stain), Borax (cheap at the grocery store), vinegar, etc.

 

Would help to know the source of the stain. To keep things white as long as possible, treat them with the borax or oxiclean, and some liquid bluing

It could also be sunscreen. Specifically spray sunscreen. It can chelate the iron from the water and stain light colored clothing.

A product like hat saver, applied when you buy the white shirt works very well.  I have gotten my white hat to last the entire season and it is still white.  I hit it with several applications of it upon purchase.

I've tried to make white shirts happen for years. OxiClean helps a little, but eventually you will get sunscreen, dirt, and sweat stains on the fabric. Other posters are 100% right, if you want a white shirt then you need to accept it's not lasting more than a season. 

 

Solid white shirts in the golf fabrics are the worst. If you find a nice looking cotton white shirt from say Linksoul or Criquet/similar, you may have better luck. The dri-fit fabrics have all that microscopic surface area to wick away moisture but they also seem to function well in soaking up stains.
