Simply gorgeous day. Couldn't ask for nicer weather. Bonus for finishing in under 5 hours. Lol. I only took 250 photos this time. I believe a took close to 400 the first time I played it. I can see why it's ranked #1 on most (public) lists. Having played over 1200 courses, it sits atop my list. Walking down 18 is heavenly. 

 

Not going to bore you with the usual write up. You've all seen the course dozens of times. I'd make a few changes, but they're minor. Great collection of par 3s, par 5s, and short 4s. Can't beat the short par 3 7th. The 8th is a brute after having to lay up short of the cliff. The long par 4 9th played like a par 5 into the wind. The 18th is an amazing finishing hole. The par 5 6th is intimidating with its blind 2nd up the hill. The 17th green is wicked. Luckily the pin was front right. Even the sleeper holes away from the ocean are quality holes even if they don't have the direct ocean views. The $30 million homes are entertaining. 

 

Bunkering is spot on. Could use a few more left/right holes, but again a minor quibble. 

 

My three playing partners were wonderful. A father and his 11 year old daughter from Chicago were having a blast. Imagine playing PB at 11? The other single was a snowbird from British Columbia working his way back north. Solid player. 

 

For a course that has a full tee sheet ever day, conditions were very good. Not perfect, but more than playable. Teeboxes were aerated, but looked decent. Fairways had a few areas marked GUR. Rough was thick, but a good height that still inflicted a penalty. Bunkers were excellent. The greens were much better than expected with the aeration last week, but still knocking putts off line. Not the worst aerated greens I've played on, though. They were also quite firm. I can't imagine how awful they'd look if they were soft given their small size and the amount of foot traffic they get. 

 

Played a Gold/White combo at 6275 yds (72.5/136). Solid day ballstriking, and a handful of nice scrambles, but didn't have many legit looks at birdie. I knew I had to keep it in the short grass, so I was very happy with 12 fairways. Started strong, but the stretch from the 9th to the 12th were costly. Five bogies and a double. Highlight of the day was simply being out on my favorite course on a beautiful day with some fun playing partners. Days like this make the journey special. Golfwise the highlight was an up and down from the front right bunker on the 8th for a sandy after my fairway wood barely cleared the ravine. Saving par on the 17th was also sweet. Crummy low tee shot left and I was left with a short sided shot to the front right pin. Hit a nice high lob over the bunker to 2'. 

 

Can't forget my 3rd on the par 5 6th. Hit a nice drive down the middle, but I didn't have enough oomph to carry the rough on the upslope to the 2nd fairway. Hit a quality fairway wood, but no surprise it got stuck in the rough just past the fairway's end. From down below I couldn't see the green, so I hiked up to get a line on the green, but there are no landmarks behind the green. Luckily the Moon was in view behind the green, and I managed to gouge an 8 iron that made it to the front fringe. First time ever playing where I used the Moon for an aim point. Lol. 

 

Pebble gets 9 cows. If I had one more round to play, it would be here unless I got an invite to play Augusta National or Cypress Point. Lol. Yeah, right. Yes, it's pricey, but it's bucket list good. I paid the same price to play Karsten in Oklahoma, and I'm still grumbling that it was the biggest ripoff in 1200 courses played. Enjoy the photos, even if they get a tad monotonous. Oh, look, the ocean! Lol.

GREAT writeup.  You captured the place very well.  You get it.  It is a great golf course by any measure.  The fact you got a gorgeous day and played at a decent pace with fun playing partners is just icing on the cake.  Post more pics!  I love 'em.

 

9-12 gets nearly everyone, btw.  🙂

Had to get some food in my stomach, so I drove over to Spyglass Grill for a cup of prime rib chili. Tasty stuff.

Unfortunately Stillwater Bar and Grill is closed from 3 pm until 5:30 pm. Was hoping for something a little more upscale. Wound up at The Tap Room. Enjoying an amber ale, and a Tap Room Burger is on the grill. 

 

 

Doesn't look like much, but the burger is very good.

The Tap Room in the quintessential golf bar.  I could spend 6 months there just looking at the old black & white photos on the walls... and nursing a gin & tonic.

If you zoom in you can see the sand filled holes. They weren't terrible.

@Argonne69 seems like you had a rough day. And to top it off you had to settle for the Tap Room and pass on Stillwater. Hopefully you can catch a break one of these days!!

 

What are your thoughts on the price break given due to aeration. Knowing they will always have a full tee sheet at the standard rate it seemed very generous to knock off a couple hundred bucks. Would you have preferred better conditions on the greens or were you happy with the savings? And maybe this answer is different considering you have previously played the course.

I too have been fortunate to play both Pebble and Cypress in bluebird conditions (multiple times) and to be honest I don't want to choose between the two.  They are each very special to me.  But the fact I consider them equal should speak volumes.

 

As for a 10th cow, Arg was invited and is invited to sample a place in Nebraska that might merit such.  🙂

I thought the discount was very generous. I'd have no problem playing the course again a few days after aeration. Honestly, the course is so mesmerizing that one's score was the last thing on my mind. Sure, going low would be fun, but I'm not the type of player who's going to grind over a 15' birdie putt while tuning out the surroundings.
