Maverick McNealy's custom (3rd iteration) Callaway Apex MB - 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson

Recommended Posts

These scream blueprints to me. I think that is a good thing. I would love blueprints with slightly longer blade lengths.

Looks like McNealy has made $2M in each of his last 2 years on tour, 75th in OWGR.  I think Callaway is betting on his future success and building a little loyalty now.   Their tour roster doesn't have many names in the 26 and under category.

Fritelli (who has the $4k A wedge) is 122nd and has made 2.2M in the last two years total.

Perhaps the Callaway tour guys are just awesome.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with a handful of the guys from Callaway’s Pro Tour department and you have hit the nail on the head.

It is an interesting contrast to some of the other OEMs, some of them being almost antagonistic towards their signed players when all they are asking for is a set of clubs built to spec.

The guys at Callaway are super professional, experienced and passionate about what they do, from all the guys I have met from their team this is not their job or career, it is their life!

Mavrick McNealy has a solid career on the PGA tour and the potential to grow/improve from here.

With all that in mind I’m not super surprised that the Callaway Pro Tour dept would develop whatever is required to keep Maverick happy, Callaway has a large number of 5 axis CNC machines at its HQ to be able to fulfil this request.

Can someone explain to me the groove pattern here in the bottom half? Did he just take a groove sharpener to the end of the blade? What's goin on here?

The grooves were probably done by a CNC machine and with the heads being raw it’s more than likely just scratches from the CNC machine. If you take areal close look at most of the irons and them being prototypes they all have a rough finish.

I always thought those streaks were from cleaning the club face with a towel in the same, repetitive way.

I believe McNealy remains the only Callaway staffer to have a unique Toulon model crafted specifically for him, which was made when he was toiling away on the Korn Ferry tour. I'm pretty sure every other staffer with a custom Toulon uses one of their standard models (Austin, Madison, etc.) with custom lines or necks or whatever. I always wondered what the deal was with that, and your answer is the most plausible one I've come up with.

Kelly Kraft had a one of one made. It was the first Santa Monica and it didn't have their diamond milling (they've since made others somewhat similar to it).

I know about it, because it's sitting in a staff bag in my golf room and the Callaway/Toulon guys confirmed it's 1-of-1 status on twitter.

This is correct.

Anyone with raw heads can tell you this is what happens when you wipe sand/sandy soil out of the grooves repetetively.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
