Letting a group play through

No group in the history of golf, will ever, EVER admit their group is slow. So... take that for what you will. 😉

And poolie, can you dial things back a little? I already covered the left lane bit, but you just are adding a bit more fuel to the fire with the other stuff. Personal attacks aren't really the best way to approach things on this forum.  kthx

I am glad you posted this because I have wanted to ask someone who's like you this for some time. Do you also sit in the left line while drivers are piling up behind you? From the way you describe your actions on the course, I have to imagine you are.

You should have let those two cruise right past you on the first tee regardless of the fact that you were butt hurt because of their stupid phone or them pulling up. Get over it. And since you didn't let them through on the first hole, then you should have let them cruise past you when someone (actually more than one you say) first mentioned it in your group. And since you didn't you should have done it the second time someone in your group said it.  They were right and you are wrong. And there's no rule about when you let someone through. It does not have to be on a tee box or certain hole, it can be anywhere and at anytime on the course.

You are a narcissist.  It's all about you. You don't care about them and you certainly don't even care about your fellow playing partners. They are feeling rushed, because they are rushed, and all they want is to let them through but your narcissism won't allow it. And FYI, just because someone is still on the last putting green and not on the tee  box does not mean they are that far behind. Often times, guys will slow it down in those situations and practice some putts etc. instead of being right on top of you.   I hate to say but guys like you are one of the problems with golf these days.

After re reading what the OP wrote, I'm inclined to agree with you. I've noticed a lot of people who have "kill or be killed" careers where one-upmanship and an aggressive "gotta be first" mentality is rewarded. The problem with those people is the longer they have been in that atmosphere the harder it is to "turn it off". Then it starts to affect every other aspect of their lives.

But I think the most important thing in general is situational awareness and common courtesy. If the course is wide open and you know you're holding up/going to hold up another group - let them through. If the course is stacked, apologize and let them know there's nowhere to go and commiserate over the slow play together while waiting.

... It just can't be said any better than this ^ and it really covers all situations IF people use common courtesy. Sadly they all do not. I play as a single more than I would like and when I do common sense and courtesy is my guide. I can easily go through 6 groups in a round but certainly not 6 groups in a row. If there are 3 groups together and the rest of the course is open, it is possible and I would like to play through the 3 of them. But if there are 3 groups and a hole open then more groups playing, even if I am asked to play through I tell them I appreciate the offer but there is really nowhere to go. Common courtesy goes both ways.

... I think the thing many don't understand having been paired up with slow groups that get annoyed at others riding up their butts or fast groups that are slowed down by the group in front is George Carlins observation of drivers on the road "Ya ever notice than anyone driving slower than you is a MORON and anyone driving faster than you is a MANIAC!" It should actually be pretty rare for everyone to keep up a nice perfect 4 hour pace. But if they can at least try and keep up with the group in front when the course is full, that should be good enough. Still some fast players will be disappointed and some slow groups may fall a little behind but it should not be more than 1 hole. Just don't expect all other groups to share you pace.

... Personally I am amazed at how more groups than I would hope, are just oblivious there is anyone else on the course. The group that flies from the tee to green, then slows to a crawl taking twice the time it took them to get there. Holes open in front but ya can't get through because they are off the tee so fast. Standing on the tee and talking like they are on The View and tee off when they see us approaching with the group min front already on the green. Or the group socializing with the hot cart girl and holding things up and while this will be an unpopular opinion, I think all cart girls should be over weight and unattractive. That would save 1/2 hr right there. 😝

I thought I've seen everything, but there's always something new I guess. I was playing as a single the other day behind a threesome walking. They were on the 8th tee with the group ahead of them walking off the 9th green. I was on their tail the whole round, and never once did they ask if I would like to play through.

Anyway, what was odd was that they were standing off in the shade 20 to 30 yds from the teebox. Each player took their turn walking to the teebox to hit, and only when the player walked back to the shade would the next player go to the teebox. Absurd. Now, if it was 110 degrees I might understand. However, the temperature was in the mid-70's.

It ceases to amaze me how slow some groups can be getting off the tee. Can't begin to count the number of times my group has watched a group walk off the green, hit our approaches, hit our chip shots after missing the green, putted out, and then rolled/walked up to the next teebox to find the group ahead still hitting with the hole open in front of them.

I find that many groups that hold up play are hitting from tees that are too much for them. Usually, but not always, these groups are males in their 20’s and 30’s (I’m way past either group, btw.)

And often they seem to be occasional type golfers and/ or gambling.  The 4 buddies out for their annual round of golf... they're the worst offenders.

Yeah, and the 14 hcp (but actually 26 counting penalties properly, without gimmies and playing by the rules) that watch too much tour / youtube golf and feel the need to play "from the tips" and carefully map out, and in great describe their approach to all their partners. "Yeah, so I'm gonna start it at the bunker, hold a baby-fade up against the wind to catch the speed-slot and take the fir out of play. That would get me a 6 iron for a layup. You see that tall tree at the back? If it lands on that line, it's money bro". Proceed to pick out an aim-point, waggle and freeze for 20 seconds, shank into the woods. Then 15 seconds for excuses, ifs and buts.

Rinse and repeat x4.

Not saying you shouldn't have a plan of attack for the hole regardless of your skill level, but that's called the "mental" part of the game because it takes place inside your own head..

On a side note to the OP, I used to be sort of like you might be…super anxious and on edge about what was happening around, in front of or behind my group. I had “rabbit ears” and wanted silence during my turn to play. Any little thing could throw me off my game.

I can’t tell you I’m 100% cured of it, but with age and experience I’ve realized that I was often hurting myself and my own enjoyment of the game and making it awkward with my playing partners too. I don’t ever remember a positive outcome from being stressed out while playing golf.

I’d encourage you to try to find peace out there wherever you can. It’s better.

Great comment.  I have a friend who's like how you describe your previous self.  I don't see him often and like playing with him, but he's incredibly sensitive to everything around him (especially when he's playing badly), and it makes everyone on edge that they'll be the one moving when he's putting or standing in the wrong place.  The game becomes tense too often when he's like that.

But why do you care?  If they are playing slow, it doesn't matter to me if they are playing the ladies tees and are 70-year-old scratch golfers.

I don’t, unless that’s the reason that they are slow and backing up the course.

If winning was easy, losers would do it.
