I will try chipping cross handed like the US Open Champ

Recommended Posts

I chunk or thin my chips 2 to 3 times a round costing me a few strokes. I will try chipping cross handed like Fitz. First it looks weird but when I tried it it feels more solid and natural. Anyone here chipping cross handed? What is the maximum distance for this chipping method? As I get more than 30 yards it started to feel akward.

Not a bad way to do it. Helps remove excessive left wrist flexion ("bowing") and secondary axis tilt IMO. I've tried practicing with it but honestly find more benefits from practicing left hand only (keep left wrist extension in backswing) or by setting up cross handed and then switching my grip to get a nice "level" setup.

Has he ever said why he switched?

Literally read about this in an article yesterday so it's on my mind. This was the quote from the piece:

One of the most noticeable quirks of Fitzpatrick’s game, though, is his cross-handed chipping, another technique he’s employed since 2020. Before the final round of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, Fitzpatrick explained why he uses the technique, which places the left hand low (for a right-hander). He said: “I had a tendency to sort of drive the handle and then the ball would fall off the face, whereas with this, if I did that, I would just shank it. I feel like it's just much more consistent in strike, flight and spin.”

I've been chipping cross-handed now for 6 years and will never go back to conventional. I do it exclusively from about 50 yards and in and if I can be honest I am very good at it. My short game is by far the best and most consistent part of my game.

I had always been a good chipper of the golf ball. When my wife of 34 years passed away in 2013 I quit playing golf for almost a year. Everything came back pretty quick except my chipping, for whatever reason I had the yips and had them bad. So bad I was ready to quit the game I was obsessed with and loved playing. Tried everything and watched every video I could but nothing helped. Then one day I was watching golf on TV and saw VJ chipping cross-handed. Went in the back yard and tried it immediately. Felt a little awkward but was hitting everything crisp and clean. Played the next day and chipped great all day, and have continued to do so since.

From about 10 - 15 yards and in I ALWAYS use my 7 iron unless I have to go over something. Between there and about 50 yards I use whatever the shot calls for.

All I'm saying is watch your ankles if you're hanging around a practice green this weekend. There are going to be skulled chip shots flying every possible direction!

I don't need to be chipping cross handed to do that.

Far as I can make out, Fitzpatrick says he does it as conventional grip the ball used to "slide off the face". (No idea what that means). With cross handed, he says he gets a heavier hit.

I tried it, I kind of felt it hit heavier, yes, possibly as everything is locked so maybe the club deflects less from impact. However, it felt so awkward and unnatural (as it clearly did for Brad Faxon on the Sky Sports coverage) it's not something I'm going to persevere with ATM. I'm wimping out.

Did you have success? I too chunk or skull chip shots 2-3 times a round.

Not too much success. I still hit it thin. I am not sure if I will stick with it or not at this point but now it is lack of trust with the new technique on the course. I saw one video on Youtube saying practice cross handed chipping but chip normally when playing. I will try this for awhile.

Switched to cross handed chipping from 30 yards in about 5 years ago and have never had better consistency.   The chipping yips are real and at one point about 10 years ago I walked away from the game for 2 years.  Greatest think I ever did.  Can go high, low, skidded, or runner.  Never going back to conventional.

I've changed my mind. Tried it properly last night on the course and there is something to it. Feels like the club wants to stay out in front of you / picks up steeper and then there's way less hand movement coming into the ball.

I was aware when Vijay started doing it and it wasn't very convincing, Fitz seems to have found a way to setup where it looks reasonably normal.

Still awkward but worth a bash.

  • 1 year later...

Been doing it for about 2 years and doubt I will ever go back.

I used to be a fairly decent chipper, then I had hip surgery and my return to golf was an overseas golf trip with no practice since the surgery.

I skulled my first chip, then the next, and then the next and and before the end of the trip I had developed a full-blown case of the yips.

I switched to cross handed after seeing Fitzpatrick and I haven't yipped one since and have never chipped better.
