What Driving Iron/utility iron is most "blade-like" ?

Recommended Posts

Currently game miura baby blades / titleist 620 mbs depending on the day. Exclusive blade player really..

in the market for a narrow/small head and thin top line, minimal offset "blade-like" utility iron that I could play off the tee with the occasional 2nd ball into par 5s... not something that is a big chunky clubhead..

are there any driving irons on the market like that currently? or are all of them big bricks?

Look for a Callaway X-Forged UT.

But most driving irons are meant to be a bit bigger, hollow for that hot face. Some guys just use a distance iron like a P790, i500, ZX5, etc as that club since they are smaller than a DI usually.

Agreed with the Callaway. These are the exact reasons I got one. Minimal offset, thin-ish top line. Not overly large looking.

I have a u500, t100s and t100, all 3 irons that I swap out depending on course conditions and how my swing is going.  T100s is for windy conditions because I can easily flight it low and turn it over for a stinger off the tee, t100 is when I need to hold a green from 220 and u500 is a monster tee club that can also get me out of trouble in the rough/fescue/hardpan/whatever. But wow does it sound horrible given it’s hollow nature but does still look chunky from address compared to a blade. I hear the new t200 utility build are pretty excellent mix of the t100 & u500.

Or just be a cool weasel and get yourself a true blade 2 iron, sure there's some Miura and Titleist on ebay

I had a 2 iron baby blade from my last set that I sold a couple years ago.. that thing was scary setting up to it.. no way I go back to that weapon

Look for an older Miura tournament blade. Not as scary as a baby blade but still plenty small.

Not really sure what the point if a driving iron is if you want a blade like club with a thin topline and minimal offset.

Just get a Miura 2 iron.

had a miura bb 2… was bad news. Want something that’ll help me more like a driving iron that isn’t going to drive me nuts looking down at it

From seven-ish years ago, I recommend the older Taylormade RSi TP UDI. Comes in 16, 18, 20, 23, and 26 degrees, if you can find them. They're not overly large, very workable but still forgiving and work well off the turf. They do have a thicker topline than my MP18 blades, but not egregiously so. Great feel and only mildly clicky. They can be had for $150-160ish.

For my money the ZX is the best one for all-around play off tee and turf. May not be the absolute skinniest, but definitely not large — it has a nice compact blade and clean look. Super playable.

Thinner ones I’ve seen recent years that I liked are the Callaway UT and Wilson Staff.

The Titleist 716 or 718 T-MB was nice and compact with a normal sole and top line but had some offset. It wasn’t forged though. The 712U was but that club is almost 9 year old now. Otherwise, yeah, the PXG 0311 X is probably the best bet.
