Foot joy premiere 2023 - anyone know if they are changing the fit

Recommended Posts

Is the fit for 23 staying the same?  I’ve bought 3 pairs now trying to experiment to get the right fit and nothing is working.  Tried heel pads, extra eyelets, insoles and there is no medium.

the toe box and front on these is extremely strange, super narrow but the heel is super wide causing lock down issues.  In medium width, the front is too narrow but the heel lock down is ok.  In wide, the front is perfect but there’s so much heel slip that I almost come out of the shoes.  Heel pads improve slightly but make it feel very awkward.

really want to love these as stability and traction are unlike anything I’ve ever seen, but unless they change the fit, I’ve got to go a different direction.  Anyone know?

I was looking at buying some, but I didn't want to make the purchase and then them come out with a new model a week later.

I ended up chatting with someone from FJ and they told me there were no immediate plans to release a new model of the Premiers. I have no way of verifying that and it could just be a "company line", but it's all the info I have to go on.

Interesting - I saw the 23 catalog shows a new edition to the premiere line (the Wilcox) so that model would be new I guess.  I’m just hoping the do something about the fit, because these are so strangely constructed.  I’ve had a few friends try them on too, and everyone struggled to get secure heel lock.  They look so great tho

I totally agree with you on this. Wide heels narrow toes, for me a no go. It sucks because the styles they have come out with lately have been great. Gfore are just to narrow all around for me as well.

It makes no logical sense… if you just think about the construction of the foot, the heel is critical for lock down and most need more width on forefoot.  I’d say the majority of people would benefit from an improved fit design

I own Premiers and Traditions, I have to say, for walking the Traditions are simply great, when riding I always use the Premiers, for me, the fit is great (I do have narrower feet). traditions are way more comfortable due to the softer sole, Premiers are just classy, comfortable as well but I wouldn't recommended them for walking, they are comfortable, no doubt, and I have walked 18 on them, but for my liking Traditions are much better for walking...I have used FJ for years and they really haven't much with the fit, unless you need a wide or extra wide shoe...

Thank you. See those now. Wonder why they are listed at a higher price?

Looks like a March 2023 (at the earliest) release date so I guess the guy I talked to was mostly correct. I asked if there was a new one coming "soon" and he said no. I wouldn't call 5-6 months soon either 🤣

I stumbled on that sight a few months ago. Pretty cool to see all that. Not sure many know that’s out there. Titleist clubs should have their 2023 out soon as well.

They got rid of the Tarlow for the Wilcox? The Wilcox looks awful imo. The Tarlow could be my favorite footjoy shoe they have ever made. I scooped up another pair of the all whites last night. I might make one more purchase so I have them for the next couple seasons.

Totally agree.  Wow, that's disappointing.  Gonna do the same thing, order a few backups for the following years.

Do you know if the Tarlow and Packard fit exactly the same?  I’ve never tried on the tarlow but assume it’s basically the same mold

It's the same last, so they fit nearly identical to one another. The toe box of the Packard flexes a little more due to the lack of cap that the Tarlow has.

Personally I think the Tarlow fits way different that the Packard. I have the all white Tarlows and I have two pairs of the Packards and I personally think the Tarlow has more room in the toe box. I find that the packard overall fits tighter than the Tarlow.

I would doubt that FJ would make a change even though they know the fit on the Premiers is 1/2 size big and 1 width more narrow. Maybe the better option would be to advise customers about the fit difference.

FootJoy has always been great about telling you what last every shoe model uses. The Premiers have always been what they are and unless they publish descriptions of new models saying specifically that they use a narrow heel, wide toe last then future Premiers will continue to fit the same. I wish other manufacturers were so detailed and specific in their published specs.

But honestly, if you don't have a foot that fits the narrow toe/wide heel shape (which is probably correct for a single digit percentage of male golfers) why would you be buying multiple pairs of Premiers to start with? They've got to be horribly uncomfortable and ultimately are going to cause damage to your feet.

The fit on the new Pro SL and Premiers is definitely not the same as former DryJoy or SL models. They know the newer versions fit 1/2 larger and are more narrow even though they are “built on the same last”. I’ve worn FJ Dryjoys for over 30 years, and these are the first FJ shoes that don’t fit the same.

This is very distressing news since I have been wearing 9.5 XW in Footjoy shoes for years. If their XW isn't I will have a problem. Haven't been able to try any as most locations don't carry that many XWs.

I wore 9XW in FJ Dryjoys for 30+ years. Can barely get my foot in a 9XW Premier.

Have you tried going up a size or are you trying a different style or manufacturer?

I tried different sizes/models and nothing fit. So I’ve went to New Balance, and they fit and feel great just wish they looked more classic.

Footjoy is one of the most head scratching shoe fits for me. Tried multiple sizes and widths and cannot get comfortable. I am a 13 in Jordan's, G4, ecco and 13w in most Nike. I am nothing close in Footjoy. I can't figure it out.

Which Footjoys? They have more than a dozen different lasts and some of them are VERY different from each other.

Really weird you would say this as almost every thread I’ve read has confirmed the fit of the current model is a deviation from tradition.  FJ rep confirmed this on the phone so I think wondering if they are going back to a more expected fit us valid.  Trying to exhaust all options as these shoes look amazing and perform different than any other ive tried (stability/traction).

Did the rep tell you the names of the lasts they changed from and to?

According to the info in that catalog from the NBK link, both the existing (Packard) and new (Wilcox) Premiers have the Laser Street Last. That's not as extreme as most Ecco lasts in terms of narrow heel/full toe but the Laser family have always been in that direction. Not sure why you'd be finding Premiers to fit narrow in the toe and wide in the heel.

But I've never paid attention the Premier range. Maybe at some point in the past they used a different (not Laser family) last with narrower toe and wider heel than the 2022 Packard and 2023? (Wilcox).

Yeah, those should be the Laser Street last. Fairly wide in the toe although not especially deep top to bottom in the toe area. Decent amount of depth in the middle if you have high arches. They say the heel is "slightly narrow" but on my feet the Laser series are still a bit too loose in the heel usually (although it's been many years since I last tried them).

If you have gotten on with Nike shoes in the past, my guess would be that something other than a Laser last in FootJoys would be a better bet for you. At least the ones I've seen in the past, Nikes tend to be more straight proportioned where the toe and heel are similar widths. The FootJoy Laser lasts are a little more wedge shaped with the toe wider relative to the heel.
