SIK Face vs Sweet Face (cobra vs evnroll) putter tech

Recommended Posts

To anyone who has rolled both the cobra and evnroll lines, can you offer up any info on how the tech in these putters compares? Cobra faces have the descending loft tech and evnroll has the sweet face groove tech, both seem to address speed/pace issues based on strike location. Is one "better", more impactful, or more noticeable than the other? Would love any feedback

I’ve used grooved face putters for over 20 yrs. Rife for 16+ yrs and Evnroll for the last 6. Without a shadow of a doubt they outperform non grooved faces. That being said, the Evnroll technology is on another level. I truly can’t understand why it’s not more popular. I’ve seen it on monitors and on the course do things that shouldn’t be possible. However, the DLT technology on the Sik putters is really interesting. If Sik and Evnroll had a baby it would perfect in my opinion. Having the vertical face forgiveness of Sik, and the horizontal face forgiveness of Evnroll would be borderline illegal.

The cobra felt very clicky. The evenroll is also clicky but more of a firm/responsive click, while the cobra feels more of a hollow click. Almost as if you’re putting with a ping-pong ball.
The cobra has the DLT where evenroll has the sweet face. If your miss-hits tend to be centre height, but around the toe or heel the- evenroll would theoretically be the better option. If you tend to hit the putts low on the putter face the Cobra would theoretically work better for you.
But to me, the biggest difference is the feel.

I can vouch for the DLT on the new Cobra King Stingray and the original SIK putter the SIK Jo Prototype Kenny Knox and the Txema Jose Maria Olazabal collaboration between Bob Evans & Kenny Knox with JMO.

I have rolled all three DLT putters. The aluminum insert on the Cobra Stingray is softer. Distance control off all the DLT faces are very good, but hard to fully compare non insert blade putters to a mallet with an insert.

As for the Evnroll, I can only compare with the Guerin wavy grooves. Just after Guerin Rife sold off Rife Putters (I think in 2016) and before Evnroll he came out with a few models the Tour Spec Master Milled Rockersole Series. The wavy grooves are very effective at rolling the ball without skipping. Great feel.

I'm a believer in both the technologies involving DLT and face grooves.

The first DLT putter I used was a Todd Sones designed Tommy Armour DLT, Declining Loft Technology is what he termed it I think. It also had horizontal milled face lines, but much shallower. This is / was a very underrated putter.

Sik and Evnroll may not have had a baby together, but they both had plenty of brothers.

The first Sik was a Sik Jo Prototype KK (Kenny Knox), then a limited run Txema - Jose Maria Olazabal Siganture Limited 300 and a Kenny Knox Record Series, all Circa 62 No. 2 styles.

Evnroll's father Guerin Rife had many sons.

Evnroll is better for horizontal forgiveness and steering the ball back to straight.

SIK DLT is my choice as it always launches perfectly whether it’s a 3 foot putt or 100 foot putt.  There’s more inconsistency for me in distance control when it bounces, jumps, or skids.  So I choose DLT to eliminate the three putt.

thanks OP @ScottHutch2 for the post on these grooved face putters... am intrigued by both the putters you've mentioned.

I've been a fan of Ping's "TR" grooves ... wondering if their similarity to Rife's grooves = contributed to Ping discontinuing these horizontal groove style?

It’s the inconsistent feel for me.  Hitting an Evnroll pure feels so different compared to just barely being off center.  Pure hits felt completely dead.  It drove me absolutely crazy.  I’m all about technology in putters, though. That’s why I use a Cobra with the DLT.

No doubt. I actually asked Guerin about this and it’s because in the center of the face the grooves are wider so there is more air in the grooves so it mutes the sound. (which of course relates to feel) Now here’s where it gets cool, even though the sound and feel is different, the ball speed of center and toe hits is almost identical. That’s why I play it, because the mishits perform just as good as center strikes.

Thanks for all the responses here. I decided to bite the bullet and drive a few hours to get fitted at a studio with Quintic. Tried a bunch of Evnroll and Cobra putters (as well as the Ping PLD line), and I must say the tech in both putters is fantastic. For my personal stroke and preference the Cobra vintage Nova was the best fit, but evnroll ER5 was a close second. The roll that the SIK face put on the ball just helped my pace dramatically. Evnroll tech was great as well, but I definitely noticed more of a benefit from the DLT. Like someone else here said, it depends what your miss is.

I’d rank the radial face on the Bobby Grace putters as the best. Same impact on forward roll as the SIK face but I prefer its feel.

I recently went through the process of getting a new putter. Was set on getting a Scotty or an Evnroll for a milled face.  I’m coming from a 2 ball. I must have hit over 50 putters for hours over multiple visits. A few putters really stood out to me. One of the putters that really stood out to me was the King Nova 40. The Nova 40 felt really really good. The best insert I hit for sure.

I went in thinking I was getting a Scotty or Evnroll. I left with a Sik Pro C blade. For me, It was head and shoulders the best putter I hit. I knew nothing about Sik, I didn’t even know about the technology until I googled it after my purchase haha. When a putter feels good, you get it.

Mizuno was soft but quick off the face.
Scotty was firm

Evnroll was soft like the Mizuno but not as quick.
Sik was not a firm as a Scotty but not soft like an Evnroll

Note* I have a problem with leaving putts short. The Evnroll felt softer and I was trying to get away from that.

ALL very good putters

Rankings for my putter test. No data, just feel and comparing them against one another in a PGA Store

Sik Pro C

Scotty Fastback 1.5

Cobra Nova 40

Evnroll ER8V

Mizuno craft IV

(Mizuno Craft putters felt really good)

I played both for a couple years. Biggest takeaways I had.

Evnroll felt too soft on center hits. I had a tough time gauging the stroke I needed. For me, it was just too inconsistent.

I played the Cobra Agera and I loved the feel off the face. I felt like I always had a great roll on the ball, but the face wasn’t durable. I’d notice marks from sand and it was beat up after 1 season.

if I had to choose between the two I’d go DLT

All feelings aside, putting result wise I like the SIK DLT a lot. It's not about how we don't putt consistently, is more like, when we are out there playing, the putting position on the green may not always be flat. That 1 or 2 degree of slope could really result in a huge difference in roll and feel, and DLT greatly offsets that.
