Recommendation for a quality custom putter for Newport 2 / Anser 2 shape

Recommended Posts

Been gaming a pro platinum Newport 2. Absolutely love the look and feel of it but wonder if there are any custom putters I can look into with similar look & feel but with some cute/unique stamping. Will be a gamer and looking  to spend ~$1500.

Looked at several options like Piretti, good wood, etc. Anyone that experienced a custom putter with similar spec?

Not a small shop, but you may want to look into the Ping Custom PLD program, especially for an Anser style putter. You get a 1/1 build to your exact specs totally custom, hand made at Ping HQ for under $1,500. If you can make it to AZ you get a full fitting at their tour facility and get a tour of the gold putter vault too.

Besides Ping, I’m personally interested in Artisan. Their products always look stunning and their reputation is industry leading.

Any experience with the PLD program? This is a strong contender but committing to a fitting apptmt feels like a commitment. I am curious what options are available for cosmetics - color, stamping, etc.

The Piretti Goat will probably the quickest and easiest to get if you don't want to wait long and if all you're looking for is some stamping I'm sure they could do that for you.

If you're looking for more one off and custom I'd say look at a Lajosi Sensor or Cody James Patriot they are probably pretty similar in looks to an older Newport 2, the Lajosi has more of an AOP look to it over the Pro Plat but it's also a bit wider. I believe he has a Sensor "Tour" model which is just thinner. Both of them have a bit more of a sloped shoulder vs the straight one the NP2 has but shouldn't look different at address.

Another possible option is an Artisan 0117 or 0120 but the heel is shaped a bit different or a Brandon Matthew No.2 which I would say are probably like the Sensor and Patriot being close but not exact, but Brandon is an amazing stamper so if unique and creative stamping is what you want he may be your best option. But Piretti does a lot of quality stamping too, just not full custom.

You must be a custom putter expert! So many options. They all look pretty slick. Have you had personal experience with any of them? Curious on how they actually play vs SC

No just an addiction not an expert.

I have a Lajosi Sensor and Cody James Patriot in my collection. No Piretti Goat as those are RH only and I'm a lefty.

I roll the 2 I have very well, for me I really enjoy my Cody James it's a great putter, the Lajosi is nice too. From what I've heard the Goat is an extremely popular putter and there are a bunch of used one out there for a good price too.

I just completed the fitting, which was an amazing experience. The fitting is $200, you can do it virtually or in person. If at all possible I highly recommend going the in person route.

Options galore and custom everything. Colors, hosels, weight, face mill patterns. If they can make it, they will. You receive the exact treatment their tour players get. Ping does not cut corners. One cool thing is Ping does not stamp their putters, they engrave them. Engraving allows for limitless precision options. Also, they adjust for head weight by either starting with a heavier head or adding tungsten to ensure your exact weight specs are met.

The best news for you is that anyone can make the shape and specs you are looking for. The other good news is, you'll have to look through all the makers Instagram accounts to find the maker who's style fits your eye best.

For me, it always comes down to aesthetics with these boutique putters.  I'm a huge fan of Mannkrafted and TP Mills. My favorite newer maker is Brandon Matthew's. BUT, your budget allows you to work with some bigger names like Cody James and Artisan.  The PING program is really amazing, but if you don't want a fitting and are looking for some flair, I'm not sure it is the right route. To each their own of course.

Go through all their work....contact the once you like most...and let us know who you decide.

Good advice. Go through all the accounts and take screenshots of the types of style cues you like. Build a folder of them and then think about what you want yours to look like for a good while (a month minimum). Sketch it out, sleep on it a few more nights, then reach out to a putter maker with a fully fleshed out design. Some of these guys are so busy they’ll be more inclined to add you to their queue of work if you’ve got something solid put together rather than nothing at all.

If you go the custom route from one of the top guys, be prepared to wait months to get something back. But waiting is half the fun right?

Very insightful as it came from a person who’s actually done it! I checked out some YT videos on this. The ping experience actually looks awesome.

I love Ping - I had my first iron set from Ping and think it’s the better brand than other golf clubs. Yet, I still can’t bear the big“PING” on the cavity. I wonder whether that’s something they can forgo?
