Mrs NCLancer and I teed off as a twosome but had a single join us on 2 and another single join us on 3.  One of the guys was a member who lives on the course, and he was fantastic to play with.  Very friendly, telling stories, reading putts when we asked.  He's a scratch handicap and shot 2 under even with missing a few makeable putts.  The other gent was a solid striker but had more than a few wayward shots and he lost probably 2 sleeves of balls.  In the parking lot after the round, he drove past us with a big wave with the top down on his silver newer generation Corvette so losing a few balls probably wasn't affecting his bottom line.  He's heading to St. Andrews next month and he planned to practice a bit more before he plays The Old Course (among others).  He dropped a major compliment on Tanya as she was crushing her driver all day.  On the 15th, after another nice strike down the fairway he said "Man, she is money off the tee".  Made Tanya's day...so much so she now wants to be referred to as "T-Money"!

My putting was woeful, but it was still a nice 60-degree day to be outside playing the game we love.

It's not often I get to quote myself, but I realize my esoteric references might not be recognized by the assembled players.

This is the first day of Ken Kesey's Acid tests and the beginning of a little band out of San Francisco.

Thanks P3P.  I had to look him up. Good stuff.

Ken Kesey, American author, 1935-2001.jpg   image.webp.fcbab57fb1f710b03a83628d968ae0a0.webp

Ken Elton Kesey[5] (September 17, 1935 – November 10, 2001) was an American novelist, essayist and countercultural figure. He considered himself a link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s.

While attending the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication in neighboring Eugene in 1956, Kesey eloped with his high-school sweetheart, Oregon State College student Norma "Faye" Haxby, whom he had met in seventh grade.[3] According to Kesey, "Without Faye, I would have been swept overboard by notoriety and weird, dope-fueled ideas and flower-child girls with beamy eyes and bulbous breasts."[11] Married until his death, they had three children: Jed, Zane and Shannon.[12] Additionally, with Faye's approval, Ken fathered a daughter, Sunshine Kesey, with fellow Merry Prankster Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Adams. Born in 1966, Sunshine was raised by Adams and her stepfather, Jerry Garcia.[13]

Experimentation with psychedelic drugs[edit]

At the invitation of Perry Lane neighbor and Stanford psychology graduate student Vic Lovell, Kesey volunteered to take part in what turned out to be a CIA-financed study under the aegis of Project MKULTRA, a highly secret military program, at the Menlo Park Veterans' Hospital,[25] where he worked as a night aide.[26] The project studied the effects of psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, cocaine, aMT, and DMT.[3] Kesey wrote many detailed accounts of his experiences with these drugs, both during the study and in the years of private drug use that followed.

His inspiration for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest came while Kesey was working the night shift with Gordon Lish at the Menlo Park Veterans' Hospital. There, Kesey often spent time talking to the patients, sometimes under the influence of the hallucinogenic drugs he had volunteered to experiment with. He did not believe these patients were insane, but rather that society had pushed them out because they did not fit conventional ideas of how people were supposed to act and behave. Published under Cowley's guidance in 1962, the novel was an immediate success; in 1963, it was adapted into a successful stage play by Dale Wasserman, and in 1975, Miloš Forman directed a screen adaptation, which won the "Big Five" Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher), Best Director (Forman) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman).[3

And the band was the Grateful Dead?

Good news fellow Lounge Lizards (for me anyway!).  I am 12 weeks post shoulder surgery and my doctor has released me.  No more twice a week visits to see Physical Therapist Ms. Ratchet or Ms. Helga the Hungarian wrestler.  My doctor said it is okay to start chipping and slowly work toward an easy swing.  Hopefully, by early March I will be back to playing 18 holes again.  Life is good.

On The Golden Road: FURTHUR!

I just returned from a fun fueled trip to Cancun to see Dead & Co.  I hadn't seen the primary players since the '80's.  I was always a Jerry guy, but I was convinced Mayer and Oteil did a nice job filling in for their respective instruments, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

I will say, the "Get off my lawn!" moment was about 20 minutes before the last show.  The group of youngsters in front of me dropped and at one point in my life I would have thought, "They must be having the time of their life."  Instead I was making sure they had non-tripping friends available and were in a suitably safe place.  Many other moments have cemented my aging, but this is the most recent.

Me too, but like I said, another more purist said he was convinced to see the new iteration and was really impressed.  They were good.  Not quite as wandering as the old days, but really quite good.  I was glad I did it since they are done, and frankly I think I am as well.  I won't be traveling all over the US to see this iteration.  It was my first, and will be my last.

Thanks for the recap and glad you guys took advantage of our warmer than average weather that we've been having here in NC. Again you nailed a bunch of fairways Lance!  NCL puts a bunch in the short grass boys. Oh and I can attest that Mrs. NCL does wallop the big stick well as I have seen it in person. Your wife will wear the "T-Money" nickname just fine. NCLancer and his wife drove across the state in June of last year to play a couple of rounds with me here in Asheville. We had a fantastic time and we will be doing it again later this spring. I am looking forward to teeing it up again pretty soon my WRX good friend.
