Alice is a decently well-regarded player.  But yes, the England bench is rather shallow.

 

Doesn't Olivia Cowan represent Germany in international play?  Seems like that's the flag I've seen next to her name but could be remembering incorrectly.

Yep, Olivia is born in and represents Germany. English father teaching pro living in Germany.

I lived in Fountain Valley, basically saw her grew up on the range from when she was 6. She was already chubby as a kid. The whole family spend 4-5 hours a day on the range every day.

I am watching via LPGA live with VPN set to Kiyv, Ukraine. I thought it wouldn't start until 6PM ET but it is already on but with no commentary. I have just tuned in but I guess they have broadcasted it since the beginning.

The phrase “kodawari” ( こだわり in Japanese) came to mind...

perhaps I’m reading too much wrt the wonky backdrops...

or perhaps a perfectionist Japanese photographer sub-consciously put more effort into the Japan team photo, even if these small details are imperceptible/ not meaningful to most folks?

 

Albeit “kodawari” from my understanding isn’t 100% positive...

ie +’s and -‘s wrt possible OCD/ non-urgency, in pursuit of perfection

I hadn't noticed the angles, but it does seem the photos for several teams were taken at an angle, but the Japanese one was from straight on.

 I'm guessing the photographer couldn't get a straight on shot due to the scrum of other photographers in the way? So, when the Korean team posed, the Korean photographers went for the best positions in front of the players, when the American team posed, the US photographers went for the best positions, when the Japanese team posed, the Japanese team secured the best positions, and when the English team posed, the English photographers went home due to a bad tummy.

 

こだわり...difficult word to translate simply, but I've not really heard it used negatively much. I suppose it could be used to say someone is too particular or pedantic about a small detail, but then こだわりすぎ would reinforce the overdoing aspect.

 

As paying attention to even the smallest details is so much a part of the Japanese aesthetic, to こだわる--to be particular about something or to make sure everything is as you think it should be--is more of a virtue than a sin.

Rankings, shmanmings. Korea diggings themselves a hole. US hanging in there, but they should be way ahead at this point. 

 

Sweden and Thailand looked solid. Bit surprised by Japan.

a few tidbits:

-The USA groups were last to tee off, which meant they were last to hit the practice green.  My wife and I were the only people standing there as Daniel and Lexi were putting.

 

-Daniel Kang is by far the slowest player on course.  She took more time to putt once than the three other players took to make all their putts.  They got put on the clock, and were way behind. 

 

-Sagstrom is deceptively long off the tee.  Often 30 yards out ahead of the group

Should also say how fast everyone else played.  All four ladies walk up to their balls, step off yards, talk distance, grab club, hit it.  And they book it up to the greens.  We camped out at 7, and I was huffing it back and forth from the approach shots to the greens.

Sweden + Thailand getting max pts early is strong. Japan is talented on paper but they are the youngest team, experience is proving to be important early on.

You sure that's not the 18th? The 14th doesn't have fairway bunkers.

..yeah, that's the 18th but playing as the 14th.....

 

and it looks like for this tourney the "18th" is actually the Par 5 9th.

I've played this course like 50 times back to when it was a dog track in the early 90's (and it was $18 to walk) and I still don't get why the course committee (broadcasters?) hate the real 18th hole.   

 

If you remember it was the one Tiger and Daly were bombing over the lake in a playoff back in the mid-2000's.

The routing was very much changed for match play.  They didn’t want signature finish holes to get skipped if matches ended early.

 

Speaking of, it has been funny watching players, caddies, and score board holders having no idea what scores are.  When Sweden beat England on hole 14, everyone stood around looking at each other not sure of the score.  The official scorer walking with the group announced it wrong.  Those of us in the small crowd had to correct him.  Then players were like “did we win?  Are we playing 15?”

 

on hole 7, where we watched all groups come through, the wrong scores got announced three times.  One scorer called it out before the fourth player even putted.  
 

and none of the digital scoreboards showed scores, just advertising.
