Golf Shoes - Looking For A Model With Rigid Mid-Sole, Soft Spikes And Wide Forefoot?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am looking for a golf shoe that has a fairly rigid mid-sole and/or even a mid-sole shank that adds stability. My golf swing is a hitting golf swing so I roll my right ankle inward. The right ankle tends to get sore after 12 holes or so (while walking 18).

My tennis shoe is the K-Swiss BigShot Light with the following features that keeps my right ankle from getting sore: ".... mid-foot shank helps the shoe resist unwanted twisting during lateral changes of direction",  "...K-EVA midsole for enhanced cushioning, with 180 PSC mid-foot shank provides good support and rigidity under foot"

Unfortunately, K-Swiss does not manufacture golf shoes.

Any golf shoe model/brand that comes to mind that has a rigid mid-sole and a wide(r) forefoot ?

Thank you.

I have tried two different shoes that might work. The Footjoy Hyperflex Carbon and the Footjoy Premier. I have used the Hyperflex for 4 or 5 weeks; good stability and a wider toe box. I have worn the Premiers for a couple of weeks (I like the old school look); comfortable and stable but a more narrow toe box. Good luck.

I think the Sqairz shoes would be ones to consider. Voted the most stable golf shoe, has that squared toe for more toe room, and an overall slightly wider base than almost any other golf shoe. Unfortunately, they are only DTC so no way to try on. I like them so much, I have 5 pairs.

Maybe I have a poor view of what they are, but the Tour Alpha seems to meet these criteria.

The toe box isn't too wide on those sadly, they're not awful I can get some wiggle on them but not as much as some other shoes.

I think that is the design philosophy behind Ecco Biom shoes. Pretty sure they still have a spiked model in their lineup.

Sqairz are very stable and well made, but seemed heavy.  I need a wide toe box and have a high instep.  The New Balance Brighton and Striker have been treated me well.  Good luck.

The original model was noticeably heavier. Speed and Bold models are not that heavy. Then there is always the Mesh which is lightweight.

I too think that Sqairz might fit the criteria.  I have 2 pairs.  There is a lot less flexibility in the sole than in typical golf shoes.   I had to buy a half size larger than my fit in FJ, but most people don't seem to have to do that.

My only gripe, living in Texas, is that they really retain moisture while being worn.  I am probably going to buy a pair of their mesh version for summer.

Maybe it's because I get them in a wide they seem like that.  The base sole does seem a touch wider though, which I thought might have been more where OP was going with the question.  But as I said, I may be full of it(my wife would say so.)

I’m really liking my NB Fresh Foam Contend. They are really lightweight, but have great arch support and are very stable. I get the stability of my old Dry Joys, but much less weight and very comfy. The grip is the best of any shoe I’ve had, and the toe box is very roomy. I wish they had a more traditional look, but I can live with the looks since they are very comfortable and perform great.

Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 2 or 3, or Adidas ZG21/ZG23, or ASICS Gel-Course Duo BOA.  All have stable, rigid soles, softspikes, and roomy forefoots.  The Adidas maybe a hair less roomy than the Nike or ASICS, but not narrow at all.

I can confirm this as well. I used my cedar show trees to widen them up... sadly, narrower than my TourX.

That's a shame, loved the TourX. Haven't gotten the Tour Alpha yet, kinda want to but don't want to be disappointed. Still may at some point.

There is something about the Alpha's. They def feel more stable and I can feel the pods stabilizing the foot at the widest point.. perhaps why the toe box feels tighter?...

They felt great after the shoe trees.

Did you order them in the wide?  Maybe that is why I find them to meet the criteria.  But I always get wide unless I'm dealing with NB.

Another vote for the FJ Hyperflex Carbon. The carbon really does stiffen up the midfoot. Compared to last years Hyperflex the new version is night and day stiffer. I wear a lot of shoes in wide but in the Hyperflex I wear normal (medium) width. If you are really wide they also make the Hyperflex in wide and extra wide which I've heard from a friend is very wide.

Adidas ZG21 and ZG23. Regular width sizes are definitely roomier than my regular width Nikes or FJ. Also offered in wide fit if you need more room. I prefer the look of my FJ Premiers, but can't beat the comfort of the ZG line. Like walking on clouds yet very stable, no soreness after walking 18.
