With all due respect, it sounds like you're getting a little stressed out because you'll be losing a few yards of distance.  So what?  Everybody is going to lose distance.  The golf courses will adjust.  They'll be happy to have less fairway to tend to.  And the ball?  Inferior?  No, it will just be a conforming ball.  It just won't go as far.  But neither will anyone else's.

10+ yards is significant.  Golf is a game of inches.

What can I say?   Practice your short game.

There's nothing more to say.  We'll just have to agree to disagree on this topic and leave it at that.

If you drive it 215 yards - which is the average drive for most male golfers at club level according to USGA data - the ball rollback will hardly be noticable for you. Just play as you normally do, and occasionally hit an extra club.

Insightful.  Thanks for the instruction.

Drinking Meister Brau was fun in college.  Doesn't mean I want to go back to it.

Do you shake your fist angrily at the sky when the wind picks up past 10 mph?  7 yards is of statistical insignificance.  Really!

Y'all need to lose the gender designators for tee colors.  Play what fits your distance.  I played the reds last week with my vintage Hagen set and didn't have any gender identity issues.  I'll play the forward tees at another course Monday and bring some vintage clubs to have fun with the outing.

At 75, I'd expect a golfer to be playing the up set of tees and enjoying the game more - unless his/her game is good enough to actually reach the green in the appropriate number of shots regularly.  They're yardage markers, not sexual devices.  lol

We have guys in our group of retired guys playing reds, golds and whites. If all were made to play from the whites, they wouldn’t play. Nobody ever says anything negative about whatever tees they play.

That’s as it should be! Unfortunately, we still have neanderthals lurking about in here.  Heck, I pick a tee box based on yardages, not color. Maybe the USGA needs to make a new rule on tee markers.

We have 4 sets of tees.  The course was built originally in 1925.

The older courses, if tee boxes reflect the original mix for years ago, are less likely to have "move up" tees.

Course management can create intermediate tees if it simply wants to. Course just contacts the local USGA course rating group, and the group can come out and does calculations for desired intermediate tees.

If a course has undergone normal rating recently, the ratings team will have the  hole specs recorded on a spreadsheet. This will include distance specs and difficulty factors rated to each hole, each set of tee boxes.

If a hybrid set of tee boxes is used, say a hybrid of B/G (blue and green), it is fairly easy to set up. If it's a true fresh set of yardages, it will take more on-course surveying to redo. (St. Clair is located in Belleville, IL)

My own home course has done a lot of work the last two years on bunkers, and tree clearance. We have had a new scorecard for three seasons running, but the scorecard display is not as clearcut at that of St. Clair.

I do think you've got that wrong . . . in fact, that's what the whole deal is about. And, I predict further equipment measures to be introduced in the next decade to hold down driving distance. We will all survive and golf will be the better for it. 🙂

What course are you preserving? You can look at The Old Course, imo, as a prime example to me. It is a shorter course, at a touch over 6,700 yards, with a TON of history whose main defense is the weather.

In 1990 the winning score was -18, in 2000 Tiger shot -19 and 2022 Cam Smith won at -20. You can even go back to 1960 with a winning score of -10. IMO, I don’t see the course as not holding up, especially with the improvements of players and scores over that time.

Maybe I’m missing something?

Good example. College-aged young men driving the 18th green with 3 woods. 😉

Here and abroad there are hundreds, maybe thousands of old courses which cannot be set up to host elite male player competitions . . . they are too short. I'm a referee and have seen it time and again in the last twenty years.

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

When I first heard the rollback I was upset, then I heard it was happening in 2030 and I'm like "shoot I might be down in distance then" and it's not a big deal honestly. Most of the people complaining I could see on the hill slowly heading down and in 6 years will see most with distance lost to father time.

Then why aren’t the scores drastically lower?
