Srixon ZX5 vs Mizuno Pro 225 (or MP 245)

haha nooooo...I am a lefty and am looking to buy either the ZX5, 245, ZX7, or something else depending on suggestions here, but I'm asking for insights on the 225 vs ZX5 from right-handers since they are the VAST majority of golfers. I care more about people's experience with the clubs and could not care less which side of the ball they stand on when they're hitting haha.

I asked for feedback with the title "Srixon ZX5 vs Mizuno Pro 225 (or MP 245)" knowing that there are hundreds to thousands of right-handers who have compared the ZX5 and 225 before. From everything I've heard, the 225 is pretty much identical to the 245 (despite what Mizuno wants us to think), so feedback on the MP 225 applies to me even though I'm a lefty...

Maybe I should repost this in a few weeks...I didn't think it was too confusing to ask about 225 vs ZX5, but I must have worded things poorly because everyone is getting confused haha.

Here's the TLDR from my original post again:

TLDR

  1. Should I be comparing the MP 245 (or 225) and ZX5 irons at all?
  2. Do these options seem good for my game/situation?
  3. If distance isn’t a concern, should I be looking at ZX7s?
  4. If I don’t utilize different “shot shapes,” what would I even gain from something like a ZX7 other than “feel?”

I know you've gotten some more useful responses since this, but just want to say, as a lefty, I feel the pain of this post! Nothing more frustrating than asking a question framed very carefully like yours, and then get an avalanche of a) "you're asking about the wrong thing!" and b) "have you tried X thing (that's only available in right-handed)?"

I'm really interested in this comparison, too, between the 245s (or 225s) and ZX5 Mk II. Let us know how the Srixons work out for you. And hopefully even though it sounds like you've made a decision, others once they've done some testing with the 245s will keep sharing feedback in this thread.

I think I'm just gonna buy the ZX5s, and if for some reason I'm not loving them, I can add a few ZX7s in the scoring irons or just trade/sell the whole set and order again. I'm getting them at 35% off, so the losses should be minimized if I need to sell later. I was initially hesitant to go with ZX5s since that means I'll probably have to add another wedge in the 48-degree range for gapping, but if I go with ZX7s, then I think I'll be too tempted to always think "what if" when I miss a shot short in the water on a mishit haha (I know deep down it's my fault, but it's no fun to blame myself).

Any of these options should be an awesome upgrade to my MP60s. Ya'll are amazing. Thank you for your help, and Happy New Year!!

The AW that comes with the ZX5 is 50 degrees. I find it to be very versatile.

You can then move into your specialty wedges - 54 & 58 work for me

not offered for lefties...most iron sets don't have an AW/gap wedge option for lefties. It isn't a problem in older clubs since they're all "weak" lofts (PWs are somewhere around 46-48 degrees). It's a problem in any modern set, especially players distance irons, where PWs are often 44 degrees. I currently have a 47 degree PW then 52 degree wedge. The ZX5 mkii are a full club stronger (MP60 7 iron=35 degrees, 6 iron=31 degrees; ZX5 8 iron=35 degrees, and 7 iron= 31 degrees).

This may not be too helpful, as your ball speed with the 7 iron is much higher than mine (I am at about 114 MPH ball speed with a 7).  I had the Mizuno pro 225 last year and there’s a lot to love about them, particularly feel and looks.  However, somebody mentioned earlier to watch low spin with them.  When I was in Scottsdale a few weeks ago, I checked out the PXG store just for fun.  Left with some Gen6 irons.  The spin numbers were just so much better for me than the Mizunos.

I have played Mizuno over the years and other Japanese irons like Srixon and OnOff. I bought a set of ZX5 MK II and played them for a short period of time and although they did ok the chunky thick V Tour sole wasn't to my liking and the "feel" of the ZX5 is "Clicky" compared to a one piece forging like the ZX7 and even the Hollow body Mizuno. I'm back to my OnOff Kuro irons until my set of Mizuno Pro 245's arrive ....  Yep I'm a Golf WRX Club Ho. 😆

We’re all looking forward to your post once you get those 245s!!! Congrats man

There are some incredible irons out there from just about every brand. I kind of artificially tried to limit myself to Srixon/Cleveland and Mizuno since I get substantial discounts from them, but if I’m going to hang onto these next irons for 15+ years like my MP60s, then a few hundred bucks one way or another shouldn’t really be a factor. Thanks for the suggestion. Spin numbers for me with both the ZX5 and MP245 were fine, but I don’t always trust hitting off a mat indoors.

Happy New Year to you too!

Good to hear you have a resolution. I like the logic in choosing the ZX5’s and look forward to hearing how you like them!

For me, like the true Club Ho I am, I already pulled the trigger on another set of irons before even hitting my set of OG ZX5’s, Lol!!

Have a set of Nike Irons on the way…it’s going to be a fun head-to-head vs the Srixon’s!

I’ll either end up with a clear Winner one way or the other, or could end up combo’ing them into an amazing dream set…we’ll see! 😎🤷🏽‍♂️

Reading your 7 iron flight and distances, I'd suggest you need more height and spin, so consider the ZX7s to control front to back dispersion. This is often neglected and some of the players distance irons let themselves down here.

I haven't received the ZX5s yet, so the jury is still out, but I was consistently getting over 40yds of height with the 7 iron...if anything, it felt like they were launching higher than expected and a bit higher than my current irons. Spin was a little lower than my MP60s, but I was also hitting off a hard mat, so I assume spin will go up when I hit off grass. Out of curiosity, what height/apex do you shoot for in your irons? I thought I was on the high end with these.

I appreciate you throwing in a chip for the ZX7s. I considered those heavily, but my thought was that if I didn't love them or struggled with anything, then I'd always wonder "what if" and think about the ZX5s (I won't be able to blame ZX5s for my poor swings given they're "more forgiving", even if that's not completely true haha). If I end up getting along well with the ZX5s and continue to improve (or notice gaps in performance), it'll be easy to swap some irons out for ZX7s as needed. I've played decently with my MP60s for over a decade and have always wondered what it might be like to play with some irons with a little more "modern" tech. I'm gonna give it a go and see what happens!

i hit both in my iron fitting last fall, and the zx5 mkii were the clear winner. i had hot metal 919s before that, and was generally pretty happy with them, or so i thought until i played a rental set with zx5 and fell in love with the high launch and soft landing.

anyway, i wanted to love the 225, they are the dead sexiest irons i've ever seen in person, but they felt very soft and kinda thuddy, for lack of a better term. even dead a** perfect strikes just felt kinda slow and like i wasn't getting any actual compression. they did look great at address, but i just didn't gel with them.

that said, i've been very happy with my zx5 mkii set, i don't imagine i'll have any need to change them out for a long time.
