Players Irons to try

odshot68

Recommended Posts

I sold my MP 20 MB irons last fall chasing a players distance iron and it failed...

Most important factors turf interaction, distance control, and feel with a touch of forgiveness

Looking for a short list of irons to try (I'm not a digger so Srixons don't work for me)

Current short list to try:

Titleist 620 CB

TM P7MC

Mizuno MP 241

What am I missing?

Callaway AI Smoke TD 10.5 Project X Denali Black 60S Driver

Callaway Apex UW 19 & 21 deg MMT 70 Stiff Hybrids

Mizuno JPX 923 HMP 5-PW Project X IO 5.5 Irons

Cleveland RTX 6 48.10, 54.10, 60.12 TI DG Spinner Wedges

Ping Fetch Putter

TaylorMade TP5

Vessel Lux XV 2.0 Black Cart Bag

T100 is great for me and I have a pretty shallow delivery. Feel is not as great as Mizuno but they do the job and pack a good amount of forgiveness in a small package. .

The new Wilson Staff CB looks reeeeeaaallly tempting.

But the great thing about traditional lofted players stuff is that you can go back a bit in time to find true gems and still retain amazing spin control, distance control, dispersion control with that touch of forgiveness you seek. Case in point, I was curious and found some 2006 Ping S58’s with zz65 in my red dot spec for $200CAD recently. Had to try ‘em.

Took a bit of fine grit sand paper and metal polish to them to spruce them up abit (Mothers Mag Rim polish FTW), regripped with some CP2’s I had on the work bench and cleaned off the old shaft labels and off to SIM I went.
The result was surprising. Not today’s standard ball speeds but the yardage and spin consistency (my 7i was maintain 163 carry and 6200 spin with ease) was off the charts great. The bonus was that I made some very poor swings on the mid irons that still held the line and kept me in SIM play with ease. Better off various spots on the face than I would have thought.

We all love the new stuff but if you’re focused more on consistency rather than chasing 185 yard 7 irons, even the older gen players stuff holds up today. Dirt cheap and fun to explore / relive the retro stuff.

Just swoop of my set up in the Classified section. You have the upgrade of having the HMB portion on the top end and still having the playability/Performance aspect of the mb side from 7-PW. Great combo specially with the steelfibers

I got a chance to hit these in a fitting over the xmas break. I could bag these tomorrow. They have a great feel and thinner looking top line. I didn't think they were intimidating and the x100 mid 115 gave me great numbers.

They ended up being my #2 favorite behind Miura TC.

If a person has the game for Players Irons, then IMO there are two factors to consider, how the clubs look in your eye, as you look down on them, and do the head specs work with your delivery.

I am a sweeper/scraper thus digger specs like blunt leading edge and more bounce don't bode well for me.  I scrape the turf to roots, misses are thin, sometimes left.

Since 8 months after taking up golf in the mid-90s, I've played MB Blades with a time of player CBs.  Since 2003, custom MacGregor 1025M, Titleist 670MB, Titleist 735cm, Callaway original X-Forged, then 716 CB, 718 MB, to a set of 620 MB & set of 620 CB, to my current new T100 3-PW since 8/2023.  There were a few other sets mixed in, that didn't last long so not worth mentioning.

If player CB is the focus, 620 CB irons are OUTSTANDING.  They have the specs of MB, only more progressive head lengths.  I was blending them in with my 620 MBs.  Otherwise, new T100 are similar to CB, only 1' stronger lofts than CB.  AS for forgiveness, 620 CB and T100 are just about the same.  The forging of both squelch the sound of my firm Left Dash ProV1x ball.

S58s were some of the best irons ever made -- great performance, and one of the most durable finishes ever. If it wasn't for the USGA and the groove rule, I'd probably still be playing them.

I have tried many of them as well as many others on the thread, owned ALL of the PXG options, but ended up with the P7MB's.  Also purchased another set of combo P7MB/MC.  The P7MB surprising have forgiveness, feel great too.  I am playing them for another year.
