Thanks for checking. Would definitely be a pretty loose fit. I think if the magnets in the DF 3 cover were just a smidge further toward the face, it would close much easier. I just have to stretch the two flaps just a little bit to reach them. Again, I fully expect the leather to loosen up and that get much easier with use.

Surprisingly I made it the first putt then when I putt the camera down it took two more to make it again 😂😂. It was about 15 foot I’d guess.

My First Impressions:

 

Out of the box I can tell you that this is putter is really really beautiful. Headcover is so sick and love that the colors match my putter color. I have pretty much only played black color putter heads but with so many color options I wanted something truly unique for me so I decided to go with that very nice Dodger Blue and it didn’t disappoint. When I unboxed and put on the carpet the head is not overwhelmingly large at all compared to the putters that are currently in my rotation. I exclusively play mallet style putters, if you are like me, this is a very easy transition which is what I was expecting it to be. I had mentioned in another post that I don’t have a PGA SS near me so I went to my local Golf Galaxy and they had 1 DF 2.1 and 1 Mezz in their stock. I rolled the 2.1 and didn’t have much issues, after a period of time, with the size of the head but still understand why people have their hesitancy to game. In fact when I asked the staffer there he said “that is one big ugly putter.

 

The milling looks really good on this putter and the depth of the grooves would lead me to believe the feeling would be on the softer side of the house. The shape and lines on the putter have a softness to them with the only real 90 degree angle would be the site line I choose.

The DF3 frames the ball nicely at address and like I mentioned with the softness of the lines this putter is very easy on the eyes front to back. The Blue color has no glare to it, it was overcast here yesterday so will need to see how it looks in the sunlight but all indications are that there will be no glare.

 

As you can see in the pics, the face, heel to toe, is not to large, In fact, when I compare to my gamers this one is slightly smaller heel to toe.

 

 

Side By Side with Gamers

The DF3 is great in terms of size as compared to my gamers as shown below. The DF3 is larger, front to back, than both, but not in depth heel to toe. To my eye it there is no real adjustment compared to what I would normally game in terms of size so the transition should be fairly easy.

 

 

 

 

First Impressions at my local putting green.

As soon as this thing arrived I sprinted out to the practice green where I live and spent about an hour before my sons junior golf class but only with this putter, didn’t take any gamers with me as I wanted to have just some 1:1 time for first impression. After putting for about an hour here is my feedback:

 

1.      Soling the putter. The putter just soles nice and flat and when lining up behind the ball I has zero issues squaring up to my intended line with the alignment aid I choose.

2.      Setup/Ball position. It took a few minutes to figure out how I wanted to setup to the ball and take my stance to get comfortable with where I sole the putter first next to the ball to get my setup and stance to then place the face behind the ball and fully address. Once I got that figured out, where I was consistently setting up and addressing the putts, I was on my way. Next, I already putt with the ball slightly more forward in my stance. I know that many have mentioned in other threads that this was a change that most had to make to allow the tech to do its work with how the shaft enters the head and the aid of the forward press grip. So when I setup and starting rolling it straight away, I had no issues with ball position and having an immediate sense of comfort on the greens.

3.      Feel. If had to compare the feel of this putter to my gamers, I would compare more towards the EVNRoll 5.1 I have and the depth of the milling in terms of feel are similar. For example. I play 2 different balls, either the TP5X or the ProV 1. I get a lot of crap from people telling how I can play to brands that have different feels but im trying to get though the last couple dozen TP5X balls I have and move back on to the Prov1 exclusively ( I get a lot of balls from playing in some member guest and I played TP5x for a long time till switching couple years back). Anyhow, with all my putter and the DF3 is no different, the TP5x has more a crisper sound of the putter face, much more audible ting, the Prov1 has a much softer feel off the putter face with almost no audible sound whatsoever. It is very soft feeling off the face and I really like that.

4.      Lag Putting.  I started with some 30 or so footers just to try to get a sense of how much adjustment I would need to make if any in my lag putting. After about 10-20 putts from this length, I didn’t feel any sense that I needed to do anything different than I normally do to get the ball to roll the desired distance. It was fairly easy to hit my lines and get within a 3 foot circle. I am typically a more aggressive putter and typically try to get the ball past the hole, Im not so much a die it at the hole putter unless playing in super fast greens. I also from this distance tried to hit the ball on the heel/toe purposefully to see how it performed and the tech did a lot of the work. It never really veered too far off line and most were within a makable circle, a lot where short of the hole which is what I would expect.  

5.      Putting 10Ft and In. Spent most of my time in this area. I always put with a line but for the first while from this distance I didn’t line the ball up and was just working on setup and pace. Putt after putt after putt I was rolling them on line consistently. There were a couple of my sons coaches who were arriving for the class and they came by to check out the new weapon I had. One of them asked if he could try and his comment was “this thing is stupid easy to roll straight” I had to concur. Particularly on the shorter distances on the practice green it was very easy to have the ball rolling end over end and online.

6.      Grip. The Press II 3 is a little larger than what I normally play, I normally play the SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0. I do like the textured feel of the grip but on first impressions it does feel a little larger in the left hand than I am used to, the right hand feels pretty close to the same as I tend to grip down a bit on all my putters. It didn’t affect my stroke or distance control just how the putter feels mostly in my right hand.

7.      L.A.B. (Lie angle balance). I try to take a lighter grip typically when I putt or at least when I am putting my best. I can do that for the most part BUT it is on the shorter putts lately where the grip gets a little tighter at times. The one thing I tried to focus on, after watching some videos Sam has putt online about how to putt with his putters, was to not feel pressure in my thumbs during the stroke and let the putter swing more freely. When you do this, this putter just wants to rock back and forth. Let the putter/tech do the work for you without your brain trying to telling to manipulate the face in any way. It was a different feeling not having that “torque” working against your hands in the feel of the stroke.

8.      Weight. I ordered the heavy head and am very glad I did. I know these sometimes get called mental things but being so technical at times with weight on all my clubs it is comforting to know that this putter is close in weight to my other putters. Weight and swing weight matter to me mentally as well as what I feel in my hands.

This is where I had to leave it for day 1. I am headed to a golf event at PGA West and I am throwing this bad boy into the fire for our tournament. Will have more feedback when I return.

Update Update Update

 

Freshly back from my trip

To the Desert and a Member/Guest outing yesterday in SoCal.

Ill go through a day by day on-course review of performance and feel.

Friday’s round was our practice round and would be my first time on course with this putter and greens were running 11.5, then the tournament started on Saturday finishing on Sunday.

1.     On Course impressions/performance. On course I did a side by side with my gamer during the practice round hitting putts with both throughout the round just to get some numbers and work though my setup to the ball while lining my line on the ball to target for each putt, going through my routine as I would for a normal round.

i)       Friday Practice showed me what I need to be mindful of while switching to the DF3. I will say that my gamer, while it was close, made more putts on the front side than the DF3. I had a tendency to push putts on the front side, speed was fine but was struggling, especially with the left to right putts (my nightmare as a right hander) starting them on my intended line. The right to left putts I had little to no issues getting them to start on intended line. As I moved on to the back 9 I started to groove a bit more with the DF3, I really had to be mindful of my grip and grip pressure. For some background I have always played the SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0 and the Press II 3 is just a bit large compared to what I am used to (more to come on this grip for me). Here are the stats EVNROLL front 9 putts total 14, DF3 Putts total 16. The back 9 was better and putts total for Gamer on back 9 was 17 which was the same for the DF3 at 17. I didn’t hit it very close to the hole and had a lot of 20+ footers. The good thing was no 3 putts. I don’t really 3 putt often and I putted everything out since when the tournament started I would need to anyway and wanted to have some confidence in doing so, especially on the little tickelers.

ii)      Saturday Tournament round- I was hoping to have some great news to report but my game and ball striking were terrible. Format was best ball front side and Champman on the back 9. I didn’t help my partner much on the front, I did make a 25+ footer for bogey  lol and the 2 holes that I did help I made about a 12 footer for birdie and a 15 footer to save par lol. During the chapman I still Struggled with my ball striking and we didn’t play to our expectations. Made about a 15 footer for birdie and that was about it. No 3 putts and never put my partner outside of gimme range when I had to putt. The feel of this putter is great. I have no issues with distance control I only had some pushes on the left to right putts which is my tendencies.  

iii)    After spending time after my Saturday round on the range to got my swing sorted out, we had a much better day 2 which was Shamble front 9 and Alternate shot back 9. We shot 5 under for the day and moved into the money for the event. I made a fair share of putts for birdie and a couple just lipped out. I had one 3 putt that power lipped out on a fast left to righter but other than that Speed control was great and on alternate shot never had my partner putt anything outside a gimme tap in. I had a couple of very fast 15-20 ft downhill putts and the DF3 just felt super stable and easy to control pace on very fast greens.

iv)    Wednesday member guest round – Played a tough course with fast undulated greens. Of course on the practice green I had some admirers of the Blue Beauty and a few jeers. One guy walked up to me as said “What is that thing” I let him roll a few and he was like “oh this thing swings nice but I don’t know if I could look at this all day”. Hey to each their own. I love mallets and I really like the looks of this putter and ultimately if you make putts and shave a couple strokes that is what it is all about. After the round my golf buddies were believers. I had a good day with 4 birdies and only 27 putts, zero 3 putts. Pace control again was very good. Had my fair share of both uphill and downhill putts on some very very fast greens. Still struggled with pushing the left to right putts and not getting them online so will need to continue to work on those and setup but I am kinda attributing it to the larger grip that I am not used to yet.

2.    Grip.  The Press II 3 is a little larger than what I am used to and I am strongly considering a change to the Press II 1.5. I played with a guy who had the Mezz Maxx with he 1.5 and it just felt so much more like what I was used to with the Super Stroke Mid Slim 2.0 I would normally play. Initially it felt ok but the more I played with this grip the more I felt the difference, specifically how the size change my left hand fingers position which pushed a little more on the right hand which just didn’t feel comfortable. I was able to still putt good with this, you know how we can adjust to things to make them work but long term I don’t think this is grip size for me. I love the textured feel so am thinking getting the textured Press II 1.5. The one my buddy had was the smooth on his Mezz Maxx and I prefer the textured, as does he, over the smooth.

 

I have another weekend golfing trip planned this weekend, we got 12 guys playing Saturday and Sunday so will continue to get some more on course time and see how this plays on some different and probably slower non Country Club greens.

 

I am really liking the feel of this putter and how stable it is, I feel I am very consistent on my setup routine but we all have that occasional off center strike, I didn’t have any flyers nor did I have any that I struggled to get to the hole thus far. The course we are going to this weekend I am not super familiar with so that will be a good test to see how how I can adjust with this putter to greens that I am unfamiliar with.

We played in our weekly Thursday night scramble this evening so I spent some more time behind the putter with more sunlight.  Rolled the ball well but I will say that I did struggle to see the alignment mark with the platinum head color some this afternoon. 

If I were to do it again I would go with black, green, blue, etc so the alignment mark would show up better.  Just my .002 cent.

How do you think platinum would be if you are a person who likes no alignment mark. I’m thinking platinum or black.

If you don’t like an alignment or want something subtle I think you’d like it. 
 

I normally aim with the face but it had me lining up left with this putter (I think because I’m having to have the putter so far forward in my stance). The only way I’ve found some success is to use the alignment aid.

After getting mine outside, I was definitely glad I went with black. Just a really good contrast with the white T alignment aide. I think I probably could have done red or blue as well, but the black with the TPT shaft and Black/White Garsen grip looks so good.

Well - it looks like I won't be getting to the golf course today.    The deer came out to show their support.

Regarding the putter,  I'm really impressed with how spot on the fitting process is/was. They are specific in telling you to use your golf shoes for a reason. I was putting at home (barefoot) and for some reason just not feeling that comfortable with the setup. I put on some shoes and immediately felt way more locked in.  Just a small difference there, but it made all the difference.  I thought that was interesting.

As I stated earlier on this thread I have 2 x DF3's. The main differences are shafts, Accra and TPT. And lies, 75* and 71*. I can roll the ball just as good with either one of them. That's just how good they are. And the feel/roll off the putter face just gives you so much confidence.

Funny how a putter like this can make you realize that you can't read greens as well as you thought.  🤔  Maybe that's been the issue all along with your old putter?  I know my MEZZ has made me realize I was offline

exactly.  Most people manipulate the face on breaking putts and play too little break.  If you get a lab and use it properly you'll probably realize eventually you were under-reading putts your whole life.

Background

My review might be helpful for those in the market for a new putter because until I saw the promotion to be a tester, LAB putters were not really on my radar. I have gamed different putters over the years, but over the last 3 years, I have gamed: Scotty, Ping, Odyssey, SIK, Cobra and Bettinardi.

 

I always have two golf bags, one I leave at the golf club, the other is in my trunk and ready to go if the opportunity arises. I play off a 3 index.  I am a pretty good putter. Always have been.

 

A few years ago I realized that while I rarely 3 putted, I also didn’t make enough birdies. Because I never wanted to leave myself a 3-4 foot return putt, I died the ball to the hole and as a result I left a lot of putts short. I figured I could immediately increase putts made by simply being more aggressive on my putting, but that meant I needed to be confident in the come back putt. That revelation caused me to switch from the traditional putter to armlock. 

 

Truth is, over the last few years I have changed putters pretty frequently. After all, if I missed a 4 foot putt and it cost me money, it was clearly the putter’s fault. 

 

Recently, I started reading up on all things LAB. Their customization options hit home. I signed up for the remote fitting and ended up ordering the DF2.1 (Armlock) and then ordered another Mezz 1 Max (armlock). The day after I received the DF2.1, I was notified that I was going to be an official GolfWRX tester for the DF3. 

 

In my review, I will be able to compare the LAB DF3 to the putters I have played most recently which are most of the big name putters. At the same time, I will be able to compare the new DF3 to the previous models, both the DF2.1 and the Mezz1 Max.

 

 

 

 

 

Remote Fitting

The remote fitting was super simple and Calvin is awesome.

 

I shot the initial videos. We exchanged emails and based on some of my questions he asked to see a couple more videos to confirm some things. After dialing in the numbers, orders were placed. DF2.1 (blue), Mezz 1 Max (orange) and then the DF3 (red).

 

Since the DF3 isn’t available as an armlock, we discussed the options to best fit my putting stroke. I provided videos of a putting stroke for 3 putters (armlock, wristlock, and standard). 

 

We decided that for the DF3, we would do something a little different. 

40” length

75 degree lie angle

wrist lock grip

 

By using this setup the DF3 will only be a couple inches shorter than my armlock putters. It will connect to my lead arm mid-forearm and in my setup, the ball position will be slightly more forward so that the shaft lean allows the putter head to sit flat (giving it the proper loft). 

 

This will allow virtually no change to my putting stroke and allow for a more accurate comparison of the putters. 

 

Day 1 - New Putter Arrival

 

My LAB DF3 Specs

Unboxing - First Reaction

Out of the box, putter had headcover on and that was it. Other than a piece of paper that tells you about taking care of the putter and using oil on the screws to keep the putter looking nice. 

 

My other LAB putters were on standby waiting for the arrival of their new brother. Looks are obviously personal, but the DF3 is pretty sexy. Not nearly as obnoxiously big as the DF2.1. 

 

I dropped a couple balls on my putting sim putting green just to stroke a few and immediately felt that the DF3 is right in between the Mezz 1 Max and DF2.1. Meaning the Mezz has a bit harsher feel, the DF2.1 is silky soft. The DF3 is much softer than the Mezz and probably approaching the DF2.1 in terms of how soft the ball feels off the face. 

 

Testing Day 1

The putter was originally supposed to arrive yesterday and I blocked the second part of my day so I could get out and do some proper testing. It didn’t arrive until today. I had pretty limited time, but I did run out to the course just to get some time on the real putting green. 

 

I used all three putters from 5ft, 15ft, random lag putting. With 20 balls, I went through a rotation of putters. Mezz 1 Max, DF2.1, DF3. The practice putting green was rolling at a 10 on the stimp meter. Unfortunately, they are going to be aerating next week, so I will probably need to try and get out there tomorrow for more detailed testing and maybe even a real round of golf. 

 

Because both of the armlock putters are more upright and also about 2 inches longer, that was obviously a little more comfortable just because I am so used to the setup. With armlock, I know exactly where the putter rests against my arm. I also know that the face of the putter will be exactly center of my stance. 

 

For the DF3 I wanted to make sure my setup wasn’t causing weirdness on the stroke, so I was pretty particular about the setup routine. I lineup the ball, place the putter behind aligned properly and soled flat. Then I would step in and setup around the putter being soled properly. I didn’t want to lean the shaft too far forward because online armlock putters which have the built in shaft lean, the DF3 with a wristlock grip does not. That means I want the shaft to be more vertical on setup. 

 

As soon as I realized where the wristlock putter was going to rest on my arm…the setup became super simple. In a couple more sessions it won’t require any extra caution and can adjust to the setup with no problems. 

 

I was rolling the rock so well with all three putters. I think that based on my initial feel I could game any of the 3 putters without hesitation. This testing could really come down to feel between the putters because I was hitting my line and seeing true end-over-end roll on almost every putt across all three putters. 

 

Tomorrow, if I don’t to the course, I am going to get all three putters on the simulator so I can see the launch angle, launch angle, and spin rate. That will give me real data I can compare between all three putters. In addition, I will use HackMotion to see if there are any variations in my stroke pattern with the three putters. 

 

I have to admit, we have been spending a lot of time together recently. I really wanted to dislike her because I was dating this sexy orange headed beauty, I am afraid that the relationship is advancing beyond my original intent. Yes. She’s a little shorter. Yes. she doesn’t have as much to hold on to with that silly wrist lock grip. However, when I see every putt rolling end-over-end…she really gets me going.

I have been following this closely and am glad to see someone picked up the platinum color.  I have done a bunch of DIY club work but never felt the need to do paintfill, would it be too difficult to just change the color of the alignment aid? Also unless it's some weird visual illusion with the colors why do the alignment aids not match on SEP's red and blue clubs??

To add to this, I went with blue. (They messed up my order and forgot to install my TPT shaft) played one round with it and told them when they corrected it to go ahead and swap me out for a platinum. It’s not that the blue looked bad, I just didn’t love the contrast against the greens.

I believe they are different alignment marks.   The blue is the J mark.  The red putter likely was ordered when they offered slightly different versions.  It looks more like the M alignment mark without the leading edge line.

I bet it'd be super easy to change the color on them.    I was actually half tempted to go to yellow on mine for a Masters theme.   I think L.A.B. should jump on that bandwagon and release a limited edition green and yellow version 😄

Yeh they must have changed them between orders. When I ordered the red one that alignment option at the time was #9.

 

When I got picked to do the review that option was then a "J". Looked the same because they were not side by side. I didn't even notice the difference until the blue one arrived. 

 

I do prefer the one on the blue putter better. Just a little tighter.

I have been following this closely and am glad to see someone picked up the platinum color.  I have done a bunch of DIY club work but never felt the need to do paintfill, would it be too difficult to just change the color of the alignment aid? Also unless it's some weird visual illusion with the colors why do the alignment aids not match on SEP's red and blue clubs?? 

The alignment lines aren’t milled like most putters. They are laser engraved on to the putter. So there is no paintfill on LAB putters.

That's a good point.  There is a slight etch there,  with the more simple alignment marks and some tape you could probably get away with it.   But I think to standard way of filling it in, then wiping off would just wipe it all away.

Have played a few more rounds with the putter. I’m having a really hard time getting speed down which has led to 3 putts. Gotta keep chugging along.

Couldn't agree more. It is shocking to me how many putts I'm missing with a perfect end over end roll that I just misread. I've mentioned it a few times in my review but one nice thing is that missing putts like that gives me more confidence, not less

How would you compare the feel of the TPT vs the Accra given that you have almost exactly the same putter otherwise.
