Ping 4 hybrid would be the obvious choice.

7 degrees is a big gap

Yep all about the distances. If you can manage no need to mess around.

I also play those irons - check my signature for setup

If you want a 14th club I don't think the top end would be the place to put it.

You have a 15 yard gap between PW and 48, 20 yard gap to your 54 and then 15 yards to your 60. Logically if you went to a 48-52-56-60 setup your gaps would come out something like 15-15-15-10. Then again, maybe you're comfortable with taking distance off of the 48.

So... your options the way I see it would be:

1. Do nothing. Your gaps are fine as is if you're comfortable with taking distance off the 48.

2. Change wedges to 48-52-56-60 as mentioned.

3. Have a second option that overlaps with one of your clubs at the top end. Maybe you could benefit from a driving iron or some other club where you are given the choice of different ball flights for the same distance.

Thanks for your detailed response!

I could get away with 13 clubs. I added a 4 utility a couple of years. Nice to have on short tight par 4s. I actually trust it more on long par 3s than a hybrid off the tee. It is also very handy when I need to hit ball low out of the trees and still want to get some distance out of it.

Would a Srixon ZX MKII 4 utility fit nicely here?

I recently got some Srizon ZX5 MKII irons. The stronger lofts meant a bit of a re-jig for me and I’m currently at 13 clubs, as per the attached photo.

I don’t think I need to add a 14th club…unless anyone has any suggestions where I might?

For me 13 clubs could never be an option. I'm sure dropping a club wouldn't make a bit of difference in my scores, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

If I had your set, the 3 options I would consider,  in probable order.

1. A Srizon ZX5 MKII 50 degree gap wedge ordered 1 degree weak.

2. A TM 5 wood that matches your 3 wood.

3. A Ping 4 hybrid matching your 3&5.

4. Replace the Ping 5 hybrid with a Ping 4 hybrid and Srixon 5 iron.

I have almost the exact same setup as you with distances and lofts that match as well.

Currently have Ping 3H, ZX5 4i and then ZX5 5i.

I want to try to replace the 4i with a Ping 4H. I think you may benefit from this too and move out the 5H for a 5i

Are your hybrid lengths standard?

@SuperSpurs106 This would be my vote.

With some small adjustments you'd have 10 yard gaps from 8i down to 60*.

Ping G430 LST 10.5* : Ventus Red TR 7S

Titleist TSR2 4W : Tensei 1K Black 85-S

Mizuno CLK 19*: Ventus Blue HB-8S

Srixon ZX Utility #4: Nippon Modus3 125-S

Wilson Staff CB 5-PW : Nippon Modus3 125-S

Cleveland Zipcore 50, 54, 58: Nippon Modus3 125-S

Piretti Potenza 370g : Breakthrough Technology Stability Shaft - 34"

I would lean wedge setup, but you could also add something to the top of your bag that may have the same yardage as one of the clubs above but a produce a different ball flight, such as a 7w.

Mildly surprised the 3H and 5H gap that closely, but if they do, they do.

You could omit the 54 and go 52/56 in its stead, which would allow you the option of having a very different grind/bounce for one of the new wedges.  I.e., a 12-14° for powdery sand & softer conditions, that you could still pop open if you wanted.  It would chop up the 35 yds gap (115 to 80) into 12s, vs the 20 and 15 you've got now.

Or if you like it the way it is, then no need to mess with it.

I must be a weirdo, because I never am able to get X hybrid to replace the same number iron.  It always goes the distance (or more!) of the next longer iron.  I.e., my 21° 4H easily blasts past my 4-iron (even now) and is still longer than my 3-iron was.

Shrug.  Why we get fitted, I guess.

For years Ping's approach was for the hybrid to go the same distance as the same number iron.

I did the experiment many times hitting my G20 5i and 5h off the tee on the same hole and they were always within less than 5 yards difference,  and the hybrid wasn't always the longer.

With my Karsten's 6i and 5h do seem to be only a club difference.

Similar distances to you for my 13 clubs. See my signature and I also don’t see a gap for an extra club! If you do, add a wedge. Top end looks fine.

What do you mean by a second tee club?

A second driver, mini driver, or driving iron. Something as an alternative to your normal full driver. Something that moves the other way or goes a little shorter than your regular driver. It’s really depends on the course you play and if that’s needed. If you don’t have any holes where you don’t need driver or don’t want the ball to move your natural shape then you could do this. @Dan Drake is the king of this specialty.

on the wedges I was kind of joking about the 64*. But you may have a shot regularly where it’d help you.

If the current wedge gapping doesn’t suit you, you could also go 48-53-58. Tighten it up a few yards each way and still have room for this “specialty” extra club that may change up depending on courses you play.

If you don’t want to go with an extra wedge, I’d reiterate what others suggest and add a second option for a shot you don’t have in your bag — maybe you have the yardage covered, but find yourself sometimes needing more height or a different shot shape or whatever you struggle with.

Bad chipper? Add a chipper. Struggle off the tee on windy days? Driving iron. Can’t stop the ball on greens on par 5s? 7 wood. Can’t turn it over off the tee? Secondary draw-biased driver, maybe even with a softer-tipped shaft. And so on, you get the picture.

My .02 - If you hit a 26* hybrid 200, then your 3hybrid, 3wood, and driver go significantly shorter than they should. That’s also the reason why there’s no clear yardage gap with only 13 clubs.

As many have said, if you’re happy with those yardages, a fourth wedge is the obvious addition. But depending on your chipping and approach play, you might not get any extra value from it.

From personal reference, my carry yardages are similar to yours up to 5 iron:

-26* 5 iron around 200

-22* 4 iron 215

-19* driving iron 230

-14* 3 wood 255

-9* driver 280

if I were you, I’d look into why the yardages at the top end of your bag are short

I find this too, though my hybrid shots launch higher and are much more consistent. Also the dispersion between best and worse is far less obvious with the hybrid.
