I don't care enough to look up numbers on Gooch but as far as Sergio goes he may not be THE best driver in the world, but he's one of the greatest drivers of all time period. Those are his ranks from every PGA tour season he played enough events to qualify since the shot link era started in 2004.

 

He gained strokes on tour average every year.he was in the top 6 in 6 seasons. He led the tour in 2005. He was top 5 in 4 of his last 5 qualifying seasons. He was only outside the top 50 twice.

There is definitely a strong case to rank Sergio's driving ability quite high, made all the more impressive by the fact that those numbers are despite the fact that he had probably the poorest driving efficiency of most "elite" players. He was the textbook example of "get a squeeze cut in play and let the irons do the rest" for almost his entire career.

This is absolutely a great point to further it. Strokes gained off the tee is a statistic that heavily skews towards distance.

 

Sergio has an incredible amount of speed and if he had really cared about chasing optimal launch conditions he really could have been a mauler of the golf ball.

 

He instead focused heavily on accuracy and still managed to make majors gains with the driver because very few people have the combination of precision and distance he has had off the tee over his entire career.
