Does this max fairway advancement club exist for lower speed players?

Thinking of a 460 driver size footprint but shallow face like a recent Ping 3 wood.   So, a true pancake.  Designed for launch.   Weighing 205 grams, for a 44 inch build.   Lofts 15-18 degrees.

I'm thinking the footprint size rules out all existing clubs.

edit:  I suppose if they actually made a ground contact club that big, lie angle would become super critical.  Probably not very viable on that basis.

I don't know of any off the wall clubs like this. Your request remind me of a weird version of the HiBore Cleveland made years ago.

The Taylormade Mini Drivers work great as a max distance of the deck club but they top out just over 300ccs with the recent models and they have pretty deep faces.

Update - The Cleveland I was thinking of most definitely was not shallow. It was the furthest thing from it

Thanks.  I think the mini drivers call for more swing speed than I have in mind.

Your best bet is to look for 200cc fairway 3 wood heads. Older Mavrik Max comes to mind. Really big 3 wood and a shallow face but 'tall' compared to ping faces more like a driver your describing.

PXG also makes a '2 wood'.

The qi10 max fairway is 200cc as well.  I built one and it was super easy to hit. Only issue I had was it felt and sounded terrible. I did a little research and noticed the Mavrik max fairway was 200cc as well. Found a new one and pulled the shaft and put mine in it and all I can say is wow. It is big and very forgiving but it feels and sounds amazing. Think I might have actually found the one.

The Original Taylormade Mini Driver (SLDR S) was very easy to launch and relatively spinny but was more in the 240-260CC range. They made it in 12 14 and 16.

You'd be surprised about the 300. I was swinging at average Joe speeds most of the time I had the 300 in bag and the sole plate on it made it pretty easy for me to get good launch out of the 11.5 at standard loft.

I wouldn't rule out trying a 300 in 13.5. you can loft it up to 15.5

OP im not quite sure how you get a 460cc head with the face profile of a 3 wood? Heads are capped at 5 inches square so im not sure you would even have enough space to fill it.

2014 Rapture titanium 3 wood might be an option

Shallow face makes it easy to launch

I was thinking the footprint of a 460 head.  Not the volume.

Maximum forgiveness to allow a longer build.  But probably not feasible due to lie angle sensitivity at that size.

+1. Mavrik Max is the closest I can think of. That thing is big and it is a pancake. Lots of ways to shape a 200cc club but the Mav Max is more low profile than others.

Take a look at a Ping K15 fairway wood, fairly big for a fairway wood, not too deep faced, but likely not as shallow as Ping's G lines of fairway woods. The 3 wood is 16°. It has straight flight tech built in, meant to fight a slice. I played one for a while, mainly as an alternate tee club, my swing speed was never considered fast. You can find them cheap on ebay if you want to take a flyer.

Not flat as a pancake, but I would try a 12* Ping G400 SFT dialed up to 13+ degrees. They make them in light flex shafts. I use a 10.5 adjusted to 12 and have no problems hitting it off the fairway.  Good launch. Moves a pretty good distance ( without the best control.) You could probably cut it down and weight it properly if you need.  The SFT might keep the right side out of play.  Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Maybe try some of the older JDM spoons -- Yamaha Power Spoon, PRGR Egg.  They tended to be pretty shallow with a larger footprint.
