52 58 setup advice

odshot68

Recommended Posts

Going off a set pw of 46 I only have room for two wedges. Thinking 52 58 but not sure on the grind to use (especially the 58). I do prefer the vokey 8f over 12f bounce.

Choosing grinds should NOT be seen as secondary to loft, and not be determined by user ability.  The gap from 46 to 54 is big yardage, and depends on wedge skill to effectively use your clubs to cover that range.

My PW is 46, then F52/14 and M58/8, or 6' gap which is easily covered using any one of the three wedges.

The 52 doesn’t have a grind, just a full sole. I need a 58 for around greens, bunkers, and pitching.

For the 58, I'd go M or D grind.  Same overall shape so pretty much the same versatility, but for me, the extra bounce on the D is better when playing in conditions that tend to be normal to soft, whereas the M was useful when I used to play mostly normal to firm.  That being said, if you don't plan on manipulating the face angle, then you don't really need the shape of the M/D and could go with something more simple.  I will say that the F is a pretty narrow sole, so you can do a bit of face angle manipulation, but it will be harder to pull off the shot the more you try to open the face without the toe relief.

I definitely need a grind where I can manipulate the face around the greens.

Does it have to be Vokey? Ping S grind has more relief than other brands and I think more bounce, so approaches a true SW more than the other manufacturers. I loved my 52 Glide 3.0

edit: specifically, heel relief. There’s trail relief as well but I think the sole starts a bit wider than Vokey.

I play 52 8f and 60 8M right now. Went down from a 52 10F before. Most people suggest having a range of bounces with the wedges, but I don't mind opening and closing to adjust bounce. Going down to 8* of bounce on the 52 has made me so much more confident with the greenside chips when I'm looking for more rollout, not sure if you will need that with a 58 though.

Grind is NOT needed in 52 because, for most of us, it's a full shot wedge.  The key with 52 is 12' bounce allows me to hit full shots or open the face and hit long bunker shots or use it in soft conditions.

Last Sunday, I used it, open-faced, for a 20yd shot from a deep hollow with soft turf, where I could only see the flag above, it worked nicely too.

My UW is 47.

I play an S159 54-W bent to 52. It plays as a 52-12 with a wide sole. Great for full and partial shots from the fairway, rough, or sand. Since it's originally a 54, it has more aggressive grooves than if it had started as a 52. This allows for excellent control.

I play an S159 58-B. It sits low on the turf which is perfect for full shots with my shallower angle of attack. It also has heel relief that allows me to open the face when I want. For those types of shots, it easily gets the ball up yet has more control than the E grind 58 I had tried.

My set PW is 46 and I just did a Vokey fitting and landed on a 50.12F and a 56.08M which worked for my gapping/uses.  As an interesting aside, I used the Vokey Wedge Selector tool on their site prior to the fitting and then the fitter handed me wedges/grinds without telling me what they were.  In the end, the wedges I fit into best matched the recommendations from the selector tool.  YMMV

It interesting to hear people say they got more confidence going with less bounce.  I would have thought the opposite is true.

I think the ‘amateurs and high handicappers need more bounce’ argument is overrated.

I have played this setup for years, primarily with both 47 and 46 PW.  I keep the 52 bounce at 8 or so, and the 58 at 10.   The 58 has heel relief, so opening it up on a tight lie works.  The 52 can be opened up quite a bit to create the equivalent of a 55 SW with 11 bounce.  I play wet conditions in summer and dry, tight conditions in winter, and this setup has enough flexibility for both.  Critical shots for me are at 115 yards and 100 yards.  130 is my PW carry, 110 my 52, and 85 my 58.  I wont really try to stretch the 58 beyond 90 or so from  the fairway as it gets pretty spinny.  So key is a reliable 100 yard shot with the 52, which is about a 3/4 motion.  Tight pitches can also be hit with a toe down approach.
