Probably gonna miss the cut with these things.  Not sure why he'd be playing irons that have hot spots on them resulting in the ball flying 20 yards past the green!!!

I mean I've been playing the i5xx series for the past 5+ years and I've never had the super crazy hot one like everyone says.  I say it is very dependent on how you strike the ball.  My brother had the i500s and he had the crazy 20 yard flier so they didn't fit him.  I honestly don't understand the variances of why they're awesome for some and terrible for others, but maybe they're not terrible for him?  You'd assume he's vetted and practiced enough with them to feel comfortable.

Was expecting to see the new P-7CBs when I opened the thread, so pretty surprised to see the 770/790 combo.

From hitting my friend's first gen 770s, they felt OK up until the 7 iron where the slot starts. Then they sounded a bit more brittle/hollow from 7 to 4.

As for "hot spots", do we have any empirical evidence that they exist in hollow bodied designs? (not saying they don't exist, and I'm thinking they might), but I haven't seen any robot testing showing some crazy fliers in either the shorter irons or longer ones with the slot.

I'll look up the Cool Clubs data on these to see if there are any outliers.

Didn't Harry Higgs play the 770s extensively when he was on tour?

From the Cool Club videos, it looks like the 770s are just a bit lower spin than other comparably lofted irons like the i230. So is the concern the "thin trampoline flier faces", or lower CG / lower spin design?

Touche!

I think players distance irons are the most under rated thing in the low handicap world in all honesty.

Agreed.   I don't have much time to practice these days,  I need the forgiveness that comes with them.

I don't believe there are hot spots on hollowbody irons. However, I have played some for a little bit and can attest for the so called "random" fairway fliers as they say. At first, I was like...well maybe there could be a hot spot. It took me a little while to figure it out but I was able to put it all together. Basically, I found that it only happened when I was trying to "smooth" one or take a little off of an iron shot. Becuase hollowbody irons are designed to launch the ball high with less spin, when you smooth one or take a little off you are reducing clubhead speed slightly which results in even less spin. So even though your clubhead speed drops a few mph, the high launch and lower spin results in a ball that flies further than anticipated. I also think if you play a high launching, lower spinning ball that it is even more of an issue.

For the most part, I noticed it mostly with my 7-PW. Several occasions I carried a 3/4 9 iron almost 7 iron distance, from the fairway. It drove my crazy so they didn't stay in the bag long.

I wonder how the new Taylormade CBs compare to the 770s from a forgiveness standpoint. I would be surprised if they don't feel better than 770s, but I don't know how they would compare from a launch and spin standpoint as well

I’m hoping close-ish to 770 in terms of forgiveness, with comparable launch and more spin. If so… take my money!

Jason Day has been experimenting this whole season with different iron sets.  For the last couple of tournaments he was using Srixon ZX7/ZX5, along with Cleveland wedges.  I still do see at least one Cleveland in his bag here.  He will probably change again....he must be hanging with Adam Scott this season.

That's the first theory on this I've read that actually makes sense.   My set is bent weaker so it matches up with the yardage I had from my previous set, and I always hit the hard 7 instead of smooth 6, so maybe that's why I haven't seen it?

I'm right there with you on typically hitting the hard 7 over smooth 6. I have a very difficult time taking aomething off of my full iron swing. However, I never hit a wedge full out. With my wedges I use a narrow, open stance in which I never swing more than 3/4 and it's more of an arms swing. I also use this same setup and swing with my 8-PW (occasionally 7 iron). So with my "full wedge" swing my 56* is 100yds, 52 is 110yds, 46*PW is 125, 9i is 135yds, 8i is 145yds. Then I go back to a full iron swing with my 9i which is 155yds and then on from there. This is when I really started to take notice that when I was hitting my 8-PW with the 3/4 wedge swing I was getting those fairway fliers with those irons.

To the ball issue...I did notice that when I played the Bridgestone Tour B XS is was less of an issue as that balls spins a ton.
