Jeans on the Golf Course - Yay or Nay?

Recommended Posts

I will wear jeans in the late fall, or late winter, if I am going out to get in a round on my own or with a friend. If I actually have a game set up on the weekend, then I will wear something else. But I don't really have a problem with it. If you can play you can play. as for the talk about tradition and all that, I sure don't remember golf carts back in the day.

You can dress as nice as you want, but I see more and more people not fixing ball marks, and replacing divots. I end up fixing around 5 to 10 marks per green even at country club courses. If I had my way, I wouldn't care what you dressed like, but if you don't fix marks, and don't know how to drive a cart properly, then you don't get on my course. I would rather see great conditions, than what is left behind by some of these so called gentlemen of the game.

Yes these are the things that make more of an impression on me than what you decide to wear on the course.

I think the question is incomplete and thus the answers to the question will be also. Most are answering this question and making comments without the knowledge of what golf is like outside their little window called home, or when they travel to a nice resort city or location.

The question is missing key parts to it.

It should also be a multi part question

A) Should Jeans be allowed on any type of golf course, be it public or resort? (We all know they are not allowed on I think all private courses)

B) Does the location of the public or resort courses make any difference on how you answered the above question? If so, please explain

I just came back from Palm Desert the first of the year and when one compares that local compared to my home local for the month of January there just is nothing to compare the two about.

If I lived in Palm Desert, my answer is simple.......No jeans on all courses

My answer for my home area is quite different.....Jeans allowed on most public courses is OK

To me, it all depends on were the course is if jeans should be allowed or not. Many of you have never, ever played golf in muddy conditions like we have fall thru the spring time. Most of the nation is either mild and not to wet, snowed under or fairy nice out during the fall thru spring. Drainage is a problem out our way and then add the extra moisture makes for very poor conditions. Wearing an extra layer (rain pants) all the time is no fun. Ruining nice pair of pants because of mud is stupid. Last, most courses up this way are Muni's, which bring a lower price tag, which brings the lower budget golfer out, which means jeans is what they wear.

I would love to see all you slick dressed nice weather players come out our way and see just how good you look after the round of slopping in the mud and not think, jeans is the ticket next time I am up here.

here in Scotland it is stricktly against the rules to wear any sort of jeans

so nope :)

From the Royal Canadian Golf Association dress code:::

Required dress:

Hats/visors MUST be worn with brim forward; males MUST remove hat/visor while indoors at host facility.

Golf shirts must have collars. Mock necks are acceptable. (NOTE: Contradiction here? oh well!)

Golf shirts must be worn and tucked in at all times.

Prohibited Dress:

Tank tops, T-shirts. Denim shorts, short-shorts, cut-off shorts, gym shorts, jeans...Rugger/Cargo pants with external pockets...

So I have to say...Nay!

Long Johns with buttoned back door have evolved to some quite comfy fall/winter apparel and, you can pick up, cheaper than jeans, casual wrinkle/free slacks that are easier to care for...wash and wear.

The club I belong to has always been strictly collared shirts, no jeans, etc. They don't even allow changing shoes in the parking lot... (they gave us a million dollar locker room...).

Anyway, they just started an informal poll among members about whether to allow clean, neat jeans.

Sign of the times... I wonder if clubs will start allowing this to boost membership. Hope not, but it may be a necessity.

I'm not sure what the lure is... I love jeans as much as the next guy. But if someone tells me there is a dress code somewhere, I can certainly abide by it for a few hours. Buy comfortable clothes! There's no reason nice clothes have to be uncomfortable. I don't even mind a jacket and tie for dinner- my dress clothes actually fit me and are very comfortable. Plus, when you dress nice, you feel better- but maybe that's just me.

Nicer coureses/clubs = nice pants or nice shorts and a collared shirt always.

Mid grade courses = khaki pants at least or khaki shorts and a collared shirt.

Cheap muni courses = I guess whatever you want, I have seen it all including the best combo ever, jean shorts, Dale Ernhardt T shirt (May he R.I.P.) golf sandals, and a NASCAR hat. Priceless.

I have worn jeans on some of the courses in Minnesota and Wisconsin when it was truly cold, plus a lot of other non-rules conforming gear. I live in Ponte Vedra, Florida where tradition and style is very important to those associated with the PGA. I'm from Australia and am now embarassed to play this game with some of the attitudes presented on this thread. You are not low class if you like jeans, cut-offs etc. You are not a higher class if you wear clothes that cost more than a teenager's first car. A gentleman should make all manner of men and women feel at ease in their presence. That is a simple guideline for all those who are not sure. Humility and kindness to your fellow golfer is to be strived after. Wear what feels comfortable for you and your game. If you don't want to offend a club's standards either don't play there or change your attire. I get invited to play at a lot of different places around the world because of my behavior as a man, not my ability to play, my clothes or the perception that one's material wealth can purchase class.

NO. In the UK, a country where yob opinion holds sway, one of the few places left where style, consideration, manners and tradition are practiced is the golf club. However there are now private clubs who will abandon a hundred years of standards in order to get new members, and that included allowing jeans, collerless shirts, trainers etc. Hang on to your club standards-once they are gone you won't get them back.

Totally Agree coming from the Same Country... I'm 19 and respect the policies... in fact i like not wearing them.

I'm all for dressing classy when I play golf but this is too much!

The hat and tie are contradicting! Are you a painter or a waiter? Make up your mind, dude!

A waiter doesn't wear a tie, period!!! In a free-for-all any imbecile could grab it from behind and choke him with it, even a clip-on type.

Wow...there are so many things wrong going on here I'm not even sure where to start. I'm also all for a retro classy style, but this isn't it. Tie Wrong, vest Wrong hat, Wrong pants wrong, shoes wrong. The Shtrt might be ok, but it looks liek the wrong kind of shirt for a tie.

Another good thing about it is that those shoes look like they'd be fairly good for running in.

Handy indeed if he were to turn up at our place - since he'd need to be fleet of foot to avoid the shotgun pellets and large dogs that the Secretary would be loosing off if he caught sight of him in that ensemble anywhere on the property. Quite honestly, a public flogging outside the gents' bar wouldn't be out of the question for such a bounder.

On the jeans thing... I tend to avoid courses that don't have a dress code for the simple reason that for some reason dress code tends to filter out a goodly share of Disrespectful hacks.

The problem to opening the door to nice designed jeans is that you are allowing denim and then it's a judgement call as to if that particular cut and fit of Jeans is appropriate. SImply saying no denim is easier.

Also The Jeans when it's colder or wet thing is a bit sill IMO you can get Wool trousers that are warmer and just as if not more more mud resistant. I also seem to remember a time when golfers actually wore gators to keep their cuffs clean and dry.

Just wondering, if a service man went to a golf course wearing his camouflage fatigues, would he be ordered off the property?..... Just a thought!

A serviceman/woman wouldn't do it in the first place. He/she would already be full aware of the need for appropriate dress standards, regardless of personal preference or taste, have respect enough for a golf clubs dress code and dress accordingly. Unless he/she is a pure arsehat!
