I paid about $500-$550 for the clubs in my bag. Blame it on the college budget. Granted, I only carry 11 clubs. Just a driver, 3-PW, 54 degree SW, and a putter. I'd really like to add a 3 wood, a gap wedge, and a 60 degree wedge, but for now I'll spend that money on actually playing until I can afford additional clubs.

psst, i'm more impressed with the guys under $1k than over $1k.

i bought everything used except the driver that i bought at an 75% discount since it was 2 years old, but still brand new. if you just count everything but balls/tees, i have only spent $600. best purchase was a used set of r9's that i got on CL extended with new grips and had only been used for 1 round. some of the clubs never hit before, and i paid $300 total for them

All prices include reshaft/regrip materials where applicable. I do the work myself. I have 4 Golf Galaxies and 3 Golfsmiths in the area that I drive past on a regular basis. I scrounge the used sections pretty regularly, especially when looking for something in particular. The rest is from Ebay. I won the 9064LS for $64 in the spring. It took 3 shafts until I found one I liked. I have experimented with tons of drivers, woods, and hybrids. Prices are pretty accurate except the wedges, they are plus/minus a couple dollars.

I think most people will have spent over $1000 on clubs... the real number to look at would be $/year on clubs...

I've only spent $300 on clubs this year! Granted, I've only bought 2.

I will probably end up spending $1,500 on my bag by the time I get everything I want...

Not only that but you wonder with proper equipment and proper fitting if this guy could shave a stroke or two from what must be an already solid game if he is shooting 76 with that garbage...

Points I'll concede to you here:

 

The driver is garbage, sure it is. Was $6 shrink wrapped new, including shipping! I couldn't care any less though, hits fairways averaging about 260-270. I'll take that.

Cupcake courses, well...a couple of those rounds were Eisenhower Blue which is pretty tame. I'll balance those against a couple of rounds of Bethpage Black though where I shot mid 80's off the whites.

Fitting, yeah, I could maybe shave a stroke or two as obviously I'm not familiar with a launch monitor, or a degree or two flat perhaps. Maybe for the next set, but they'll have to fly better than what I have...i'm pretty happy with what I have.

 

Maxfli black dot irons are pretty consistently considered one of the best cavity back irons ever. I do love them to the point I have two sets, bumping my bag up to $750? Did I cheat?

 

Anyway, I'm replying to a two month old post. I'll defend my sticks though, with a little monitory action if needs be

I think most people who are playing newer equipment or at one point had bought their equipment new would have a hard time being under $1k. I got a pretty good deal on all my clubs (some I got used) and I am still at the following:
Driver $175 (used)
Irons $700 (new)
Wedges (4) $300
Putter $120
Hybrid 3 $120
Wood $160

that already is almost $1600 and I didnt even go crazy on stuff. Golf equipment is just a drain game but if you can keep it for a while (hoping to do this) its a worthwhile investment:)

i would say i am probably at 1k by the time i have updated shafts, and had labor done on them.
