My experience with wound balatas was that they have a shelf life. The ones fresh from the factory were a lot hotter than the ones I got at retail (knew a european tour player and he'd kick me a dozen fresh ones every once in a while). I have to believe they would feel dead at this point.

There were a couple Strata's that were just the best ever. The Tour ones with the playing card suits on them, remeber those? And also the Strata in the green box, so soft and still long and not too spinny. Probably the perfect ball for me. Sucks they're gone.

Wilson Staff Smartcore Balata. They used to come in a yellow/gold box. Hands down the best ball I ever used. I really wish they still made them.

All time fav is the 1st gen TM TP Black. Still can't find a ball that drives as straight and that I can stop on a dime on the greens. only downside was the durability, but i was willing to sacrafice that.

Like the UTriTour and Strata Tour Pros as well. Down to my last sleeve of UTri and still have a few of the Tour Pros.

Spalding Tour Edition: I've still never played a ball that spun so much. I didn't love the way it sounded off the putter, but the spin this thing generated on short irons was, if not always useful, ALWAYS entertaining. Flush a Ping Eye 2 PW or SW with a Tour Edition ball and it would spin so much you wouldn't believe what you saw.

A few years later, the Precept EV Extra Spin was one of the best all-around balls I've played in terms of durability, spin, length, and feel. I was (and still am) a huge Nick Price fan, so of course I had the Extra Spin and the original Fat Lady Swings putter. This Precept didn't spin nearly as much as the abovementioned Tour Edition.

Titleist Professional 90: This ball was such a revelation when it came out. It was expensive as hell, but most people realized right quick that you got all the performance of the older balatas with much of the durability of the Titleist DT (which, IMO, was it's only redeeming quality -- I hated that ball.) It took me a while to accept that this Professional spun and behaved almost identically to the balatas, but did not cut and did not scuff as easily. Nice.

Callaway Big Bertha - a "simple" 2-piece ball which game me a lot of pleasure playing a lot of desert and links courses.
Extremely long with a very soft feel and a tiny little bit of green side spin.

In the feel section and on the green a dream.

I loved the precepts. A genuine tour two pice surlyn ball. They spun as much as as woumd balatas, bu fro memory weren't durable. Don't know why they stopped making them, they were real popular with low markers.

Agree. They would stack up with any ball out now. Just as long as newer balls but more bite around the greens. I remember ripping them back 30 feet with a wedge.

Good to see lots of love for the Precept balls. I remember playing the Precept Lady/Laddie for the first time and thinking "Whoa, this is something special"! Got the same feeling the first time I hit the Bridgestone E6.

Mizuno MP-S for me. Superb feel and spin, solid distance and durability. Additionally their not as mainstream-> easy to identify.
