My Daughter's Miura Madness

Recommended Posts

UPDATE: Nakashima Htec boots Yonex!
After debating the merits of various makes and models of clubs, and trying out representative samples from each category of club design, my daughter concluded that she liked the forged blade the best. It was a combination of performance (real and perceived), looks, and the long term view that as a family we play A LOT of golf and a quality blade has the potential to provide the feedback necessary to develop the best swing and approach to the game. Okay, the last point was mostly me, but she did tend to agree. So here they are, my 12 year old daughter's new sticks.

Driver: Nakashima Htec 10.5*, Stulz Nano Arrow Tri-Edge 65-33-030 shaft, Graman UL 440 "Limey" as an alternative shaft.

Beautiful clubs, but can she really hit those well enough for it to make sense for her to game them?
The girl has a very aggressive swing and she takes ripping divots. Everything up to the 5 iron is fun to watch... the ball stops on a dime. The 5 iron is a little low, but I figure a nice hard draw gets the job done with that club when the fairway allows. The wedges are what really shine. The courses girls play in competition are usually pretty short. My daughter hits the driver about 240 with roll, and is hitting 7i or less in a lot. She's really insightful on working the ball and knowing where to miss. These clubs really make that doable, and it adds a level of entertainment.

The hybrid has some paint flaking at the hossle that I've contacted my club builder about.

When considering clubs, we drew on a few main points: she's not getting weaker, she's getting stronger; she's not getting smaller, she's getting bigger; she's not playing less golf, she's playing more golf; she's not getting worse, she's getting better. It all added up to going for what we thought was the best option. It is funny when she drops a 9i on the green with backspin, and I miss left with a lob wedge... playing the same clubs she now has a totally legitimate way to rib me. Good times.

She's beat me three times when I was playing with tendonitis (excuses).

Wow.

You must be one proud pop. And by the looks of it, a good one too. If I had the money, I'd do all this for my children too. Great bag, if she ever wants to give any of it away... I'm from hereon to be considered a charity house. :D;)

That is a very impressive set-up. It is cool that you are obviously very passionate about your daughter's game and clearly enjoy watching her improve and succeed. I'm curious, does she compete in tournaments, and if so, how does she fare? Also, what's her handicap, at what age did she begin playing, and how quickly has she improved. Also, how big is she?

I'm so curious because I have an 11 year old daughter (class of 2017) who only started playing last year as a 10 year old but has improved immensely over just 2 golf season. She is really doing well in junior tournaments. She started this season as a 25 handicap and is now down to a 12. Her best tournament score is an 80 on a 5100 yard golf course. That round included 2 triples and a double bogey. She's getting very close to some really low scores and it is exciting to watch. She's only 5'1" and 90 lbs. with plenty of growing to do yet. She can hit her driver over 210 with roll and her 7 iron goes 125.

My daughter's clubs are custom fit Ping G5s with Nippon 850 shafts and a Rhapsody driver at 43 inches. She also has a set of Hogan blades that she loves to practice with. We have found that the blades are great for feedback and honing in ball striking during practice, but the Pings glide through the turf much better and are much more forgiving for tournament play.

We head to Port Saint Lucie, FL next week for the US Kids Regionals.

She's at the front of the pack in tournaments. At 5'5" and 125lbs, she's bigger that most kids her age. She started at age 9, but prior to that we went to the range together. At 9, we were able to join a club, so the golf opportunities really opened up. Improvement is remarkable at this age. With the new clubs, even more so. Holding greens now is easy, as opposed to her old Nickent 3DX clubs.

Amazing bag.

What is she going round in? Working the ball and backspin at age 12 is fantastic.
The goal is to crack into the 70s this fall. The Yonex driver is a 10 gauge shotgun loaded for bear. With the added green holding ability and confidence, she's really excited to play smart golf and see what happens. She plays the red tees at 5800, 131, 73.6

So far with the new clubs, she's hit shots she's never hit before. On Friday she had a 210 yard 3 wood draw that found the middle of the green. A perfectly executed 5 iron fade to the center, and a 9 iron into the backstop behind the pin that spun back 20 feet. If you are familiar with the Italian gesture of putting one's fingers to the lips and kissing them with an outward wave, that is our new signal of a great shot.

I think what is good about these clubs for her is that she knows every shot is available. For the young mind, working on draws and fades keeps the practice interesting. Playing with trajectory and spin are other aspects that keep practice fun.

Sounds like you have a great relationship with your daughter. IMO there is nothing better than sharing a passion with your kid(s) and watching them excel and improve at it. They are like sponges; picking things up in a fraction of the time that it would take an adult.

All the best to you and your daughter.
