my grandfather has it on his bucket list and was all set up to play with a member, when the member suddenly passed away. I would probably pay 500 or 600 to play it

Reminds me of the GA state championship team that that happened to 3x.

Winning team of the state championships gets a tee time (with a member), first time got rained out and weren't allowed to make up
2nd time member's wife had a kid
3rd time the member had a heartattack on the way there (they were warming up on the range at the time) and they weren't allowed to play.

I'm not sure - but I know one thing...the first practice swing I take will be steep dig that will take a divot the size of a small child. That divot will get hermetically sealed and put in my bag to become the ultimate LIVE momento.

And yes - 1000s of pictures also.

However much my good friend will take for his press pass. He's a news reporter in Jacksonville who started out in Augusta. They get access for a round in May shortly before it closes for the season. And he took PLENTY of pictures which show a lot of what you don't see on TV. I think I'd be able to be him for a day for under 1K.

I mean, I like golf balls
but not that much.

I played Pebble a year and a half ago, I was taken by a vendor so I didn't pay, but took care of the caddie etc. We walked the course and played in about 4 1/2 hours, maybe less, the weather was beautiful and the staff made us feel pampered. Great experience, not one negative thing to say about it. In fact I got treated like a king at Spyglass and Spanish Bay as well. It is expensive but the tee times are easier to get now the economy is a little slow, you don't have to stay at the Inn and while hotels in Monteray are not cheap you can find reasonable rates.
When did that change that you DO NOT have to stay at the Inn to play there? That has to be recent...
As far as I know it's been that way for quite awhile. If you're not staying at the lodge you can only make tee times 24 hrs in advance. That's the restriction. Pretty easy to get on as a single with the 24hr notice Did it in late March and had my choice of numerous tee times.

My brothers former club of last year was The Heritage Club in Mason, Ohio. They recently had all their greens switch to EXACTLY what August National has. It was AWESOME.

Before the switch, their putting green was 50/50 so you can putt on the new stuff and the current stuff still... That club was amazing.

What do you mean EXACTLY what Augusta National has? Climate control system?

I would have to cap it at $1000 I think. I'd pay that to plauy Cypress or Pine Valley also, in fact I'd probably play those two before Augusta given a choice.

I paid $240 to play Doral (blue) about 10 years ago... Never again. Snobs everywhere, not that any of these other clubs are probably any different.

Snobs everywhere at Doral Blue? You know its public right? Pine Valley is amazing but its no Cypress Point. Cypress Point is breathtaking but it can't hold Augusta's jock. True story.

Didn't care to ask what was under the grass... All I know is that it is the same type of grass Augusta has on their greens and that's all I pretty much cared to know.

I paid about $65 greens fee in the late 90's

of course the last minute flight and hotel were $1,500 so... :)

And yes it was worth it :)

So was Pebble at about $500 when all was said and done... (free flight and hotel that weekend which is how I justified it)

I've been there 3xs. Sat/Sun when Michelson won it, then the following year on Sunday when Tiger won it with the chip-in on 16. Followed Goosen his whole round the saturday I was there and the rest of the time was spent in and around and mainly on the corner of 13. I visited a few other holes, but I love sitting on 13. The course is truly magnificent.

That being said, I would pay maybe up to $500 to play it as I have walked every inch of the grounds. But I would really liked to have played it before all of the changes were made especially the adding of the rough. To me this does way more help than harm, I use to love seeing balls run through fairways and under trees. But now you'd almost rather be in the "rough" on some of the holes, particularly a par 5 such as 13. Ball sits up and now you really can go at it. Those fairways are tight, and I mean tight. Hitting a long iron off of a hanging or downhill lie in the fairway is not easy at Augusta. But when you get up into the "rough" say at the corner of 13, it's like hitting off a tee.

The 2nd cut takes any predictable spin off the ball, trust me you'd rather be in the fairway....every inch, huh? where does the path go behind the 13th tee?

I've played a few highly regarded courses (Shinnecock Hills, Maidstone GC, Friars Head GC, Bethpage Black) and it's never cost me more than $125 or so (Caddy fees)... While I'd certainly be prepared to pay whatever the caddy fee was and cover the members cost, I wouldn't be willing to put some sort of profit premium on top of that... FWIW, while I'd love to play Pebble Beach, at this point I don't see it in my future.

i agree with others that $$$ would kill the majesty and allure of the course. i feel like it should have some sort of merit based system. ie. golfers who volunteer 5000 hrs to several organizations, maybe military, firstee, etc etc etc... make it difficult, but doable for those who donate their life to helping others and promote the game. Maybe also for Master's spectators who are already spending big $$$, let's say after 10 visits you get a one time play pass...

idk just a rant with some ideas... That's how i'd like to get on, 5000 bucks to play would kill its allure for me, even if the money was insignificant.
