I played there 6 years ago. Got there Friday afternoon and left Sunday afternoon. The greatest weekend of my life..easily. Stayed in the clubhouse in the rooms off of the putting green. Only rule was that you cant be on property unless your host is on property. That was it. Its the most laid back place you could imagine. Coolest part..the breakfast menu..there isnt one, you can order whatever the hell you want.

I would probably pay $5k to do this, once it gets into the 5 digits I'd have to question it. If somebody hasn't been there, it seriously is the greatest piece of property on the planet, I can't explain how nice it is. Also, to give you an idea, I don't remember the last time I paid over $120 for a round of golf, my current club dues are $200/mo. So yes, that's a massive chunk of change for me.

I played Sage Valley last weekend, and while researching the trip/course, stumbled across this site.

My mom had a chance to play it a while back when she was with her old company's boss who happened to be a member....wait here's the kicker.... She declined saying I'm not very good at golf amd didn't want to embarass herself. :o cmon mom!!! And she's a 19 handicap too! So she's not bad.... I would be all over that offer

What would be the ultimate course for you to play if you don't mind my asking?
I don't mind at all. I have played Torrey Pines many times when I lived in San Diego, and loved the course… just not the hassle of getting a tee time and the slow play.

I would love to play Pebble, but at the better part of a grand for tee time and guest accommodations, I don't know that I ever will. Plus I hear way too many horror stories of slow play and bad employee attitudes.

For me the whole course experience is tempered by rest the of the experience (staff, ease of access and the hoops you have to jump through, the folks in your group and the groups ahead and behind you). If the whole thing isn't pleasant, the course experience gets a lower rating in my mind. For me golf is escape from the things that stress me out, and a lot of hoopla, crowds, traffic, and waiting in line are those things. All reasons I don't live in L.A. or San Diego anymore.

I guess I have become a little spoiled in the last few years with my local course. The staff is so great, and the limited patronage makes me feel like I own the place. I can always get on at the drop of a hat, and the small town atmosphere pretty much insures we always play with pleasant folks.

I think I will make plans to visit a buddy in Oregon this Summer or Fall and check out Bandon Dunes. I also think many of the TPC courses look like great fun.

I played Pebble a year and a half ago, I was taken by a vendor so I didn't pay, but took care of the caddie etc. We walked the course and played in about 4 1/2 hours, maybe less, the weather was beautiful and the staff made us feel pampered. Great experience, not one negative thing to say about it. In fact I got treated like a king at Spyglass and Spanish Bay as well. It is expensive but the tee times are easier to get now the economy is a little slow, you don't have to stay at the Inn and while hotels in Monteray are not cheap you can find reasonable rates.

Sure, it's the best manicured course on the planet, but I don't think any course is worth more than $500. If it was setup like the Masters, and I could stay in the crows nest, and they let me try on a green jacket (i'd give it back, i'd give it back), and as a single I roll up to the tee with my assigned caddy only to find out I'm being paired with jack nicklaus who just happened to be there getting in a round before the Masters.... OK, then I'd pay some of these crazy numbers mentioned.

Not sure how much I would pay. I am cheap so don't know if I would kick down a lot for just a round of golf. Would rather use money for other things. However, Augusta is #1 golf course on my list. I would much rather play Augusta rather than any other famous golf courses like Pebble Beach, Cypress CC, Sawgrass, etc. Augusta looks like the best course in my eyes. Rolling hills, lots of trees, unbelievable design, and the course is in perfect shape. What is awesome about it is that it is so quiet. The sound of pros hitting flush shots sound different than any other course.

I would pay about 10K to play and this is coming from an unemployed person. If I had a decent job, I'd pay half a years salary, no joke. Ever since I picked up the game I've always wanted to "win" tickets just to watch this tournament, much less play it. It'd be one of those things that I could do and be happy passing away the next day.

When did that change that you DO NOT have to stay at the Inn to play there? That has to be recent...

Why? You don't think that the holier than thou Augusta members might just realise they can make a ton of cash? It's just a golf course. One of the things that makes golf great is that it's the same game with the same rules played from the top of the European tour to the once a week player.

Augusta is the only course on the Major rosta that you can't easily play and that is sad. I'll watch it come April, but there a hundred other courses I would rather play than Augusta.

The first time I played Muirfield I was intimidated. I was actually afraid to take a divot because the fairways looked like the greens at my club. That was over 25yrs ago, since that time I have played some pretty nice clubs and you know what, once I’m on the course I forget how “exclusive” they are and I just play golf. Having said that, I would play Augusta in a heartbeat and if someone puts that charity event together for $5k, I’m in and you can tell my wife. Does anyone remember the column in Golf Digest about Augusta opening their doors for one day? A writer for Golf Digest played a joke on the readers much to the dismay of Augusta National, he even gave their phone number. I know it was their phone number because I was one of the idiots who called. I actually talked with someone at Augusta, she was very nice but that’s when I found out that I had been had, I hope he got fired. Anyway, I’m in for up to $5k but obviously I would hope that it would be a little less.

A 100 courses huh? I'd like to see that list. How many clubs host a major tournament, the same major, every year? You can play the tournament tees, they aren't roped off even weeks away from the event. I asked my host about the posting on here regarding them and Sage Valley. He just laughed. Don't believe everything you read bud.

Answer me this: How many clubs host a Major Championship every year? How many clubs host the SAME Major Championship every year?

They don't need the 40k from some private jet service. Money is no object there. It's irrelevant. They flew in crab from Indonesia for Buffet for his dinner party the next night...do you think they sweat $$$?

Considering I paid a total of about $500 to play Pebble Beach back in 2005, I guess the going rate for AN would be more. However, I had no issue paying the $500 at PB because I was in Monterey for a work conference and my airfare, hotel, food, etc were covered. It was a "small" price to pay (relatively speaking) to play one of the most famous courses in the world.

That said, I don't think I'd feel "comfortable" just paying to play AN considering its elite status. I'd want to be invited by a member so I'd feel like I'm supposed to be there. If they fell on hard times and made AN semi-private ;) , then I'd probably pay up to $200 which seems to be the going rate for top notch semi-private courses.
