Best irons ever made?

Also, just curious... Has anyone been playing the "latest & greatest" irons and then reverted back to their old "classics"? What were the results? Did you like the feel of the old clubs, did you play better or worse w/ the older vs newer? I have sets of all of the clubs mentioned above (excluding the Armours) and was thinking about hanging the AP2's up for a while and going back to the Eye 2's or the X-14's. Thoughts?

Currently playing a set of ansers, but just this week I got a set of becu eye 2+'s and a set of becu isi's. The eye 2's need a shaft change before I can use them, but the isi's are getting used tomorrow.

Difficult to pin down any particular iron without having a bit of personal bias, but here goes:

The best irons ever made, IMO, based on the durability, looks, market coverage, useabilty to both pro and amateur alike, set make -ups, custom options, value, re-sale value, performance, forgiveness and all round appreciation is, of course.....the Ping Eye 2 (choose your own variant).
End thread.

I had Hogan Director irons in college dated around 1974. Most of the Hogan irons around that time were excellent. Nothing significantly better since then.

A set in great shape still sells for over $100.
I bought mine slightly used from Ken Lanning, one of the top amateurs in Mo. that
taught Stan Utley the short game.

Huh, I actually found a set of those at Goodwill for $2.99 a club but didn't buy them. Might run by there to see if they're still there. Although it appears there are a number of versions of those irons on eBay so wouldn't know if they're worth anything or not.

I was playing the Taylormade r9 tp b and switched back to my old dci's with one change--I put kbs shafts in them. So far ive been hitting them great which means I'm going to game them for a while and see how they play. I'll keep you posted.

I'll play...

Mizuno MP29

Ping Eye 2 ISI Nickel

Wilson Staff FG17

I would say these 3 are responsible for more tour wins and majors than any three clubs by any three manufacturers in history. (add the Wilson dynapowers as an honorable mention as well as the older MacGregor VIP/MT series).

Been fortunate to compete with all three in my bag (and the MP29's, I'm on my 5th set...)

This is a hard one. I've kind of been all over the place when it comes to irons, but I'll try to rank it after what irons I have had the best relationship with on course rather than on the range.

While my best score to date was with 690 CBs (no dot) and I holed my first two par 4 eagles with X-18 Pro Series irons I will actually land on a bit of a long shot. ..

Back to the set I had when I was about 12, I gamed a mixed bag of old Lynx Predators and Lynx Predator Plus (yes, even had the woods). They where hand me downs from my grandmother I think. To date I remember them as pure butter while struck right and I still search after the feeling of swinging my old 3 iron. They where of course shortended L flex clubs and probably destroyed any hope I had of building a swing I can rely on. But I still loved them and at least they where great around the greens.

Out of pure performance standpoint MP-68s are the best I've tried but never owned.

Friday, exam tomorrow... :partytime2: ,,, or not.
